Forgotten Instincts
Episode 04
"Surprise, Surprise"
By Darfix

As night changes to morning, Destiny finds herself awakened by the sounds of a few Murkrow squawking about something.

"Caw! I saw him first!" the first Murkrow yells to the others. "I don't care! He's mine! Caw, caw!" the second retorts. By this time, Destiny had risen from her sleeping position, and now notices the three Murkrow standing around a smaller Pokémon. "Caw! You idiots! He's not dead yet..." the third chimes in, suddenly noticing Destiny. "ACK! A fire type!" the third squawks, before taking flight and retreating. "Caw! What a pussyâ"it's just a little Vulpix..." Murkrow number one says to number two. "She's probably after our meal!" says number two, "Let's get her!"

The two remaining Murkrow take to the skies, readying themselves for an attack run. Destiny may be at a disadvantage due to their numbers, and as she was grounded where they could fly, but she wasn't willing to let these creeps harm a defenseless Pokémon on her watch! One of the Murkrow swoop down at her, using his Fly attack. Destiny manages to dodge this attack, and in doing so, launches a Flamethrower at the attacking Murkrow before he manages to gain much altitude. A loud, painful squawking can be heard, and several feathers float to the ground, smoking and in flames.

Destiny's attack, however, left her wide open for the other Murkrow to attack, and he doesn't hesitate to double team her. He swoops down, sinking his talons into her shoulders, and lifting her into the air. Destiny clenches her teeth painfully, feeling her own blood dripping down her back now...this bird's talons were sharp! "Hah, hah, hah! I got you now, missy! We'll have double the food too, once I drop you, we'll eat your dead corpse too!" he smirks down at her evilly, running his tongue across the base of his beak, as if licking his lips.

Destiny worriedly looks down, and notices she is now being held directly over the stream she and Darfix swam in the night before. She smirks, and suddenly sinks her teeth into the Murkrow's belly. "CAW!!" the Murkrow squeals, instantly letting go of her. As she falls, she takes several feathers with. "Yuck!" she spats them out disgustedly while in free fall. She then hits the water with a splash.

"Gah! I'm not that hungry anymore," the barbequed Murkrow tells the bitten one. "Sheâ"took my feathers!" the bitten one whines while flying up to the other Murkrow. "Don't worry, that water is filled with Carvanha and Sharpedoâ"she won't get out alive..." he tells his bitten comrade, "Let's go before we attract the attention of more of her allies!"

The two Murkrow then fly off in retreat. Destiny opens her eyes under water, and looks upâ"she could see the sun! Despite her wounds, she begins to doggy paddle for the surface. Once she begins, however, she notices something moving below herâ"a few actually! Her eyes widen, and her jaw dropsâ"a bubble of air escaping her maw, and floating to the surface. She didn't wish to wait, and find out what they wereâ"she starts for the surface again. When she reaches the surface, she glances down between her hind legs, noticing these things were following her blood trail. "Yikes!" she yips, and swims for shore.

Luckily, she makes it unscathed. She crawls up onto the shore bed and collapses in fatigue next to the would-be dinner for those Murkrow. She manages to find the strength to force her wet, soaked body over to the other Pokémon. Upon closer examination, she notices the poor thing is an Eevee, andâ"he's breathing!? She stands over him a little, looking down at him curiously, sniffing at his ears a little. "Are youâ"ok, sir?" she asks, as blood, and water drip on him a little bit.

The Eevee groans a little, bringing one of his paws to his head, as if having a headache. Slowly, he opens his eyes, noticing a few drops of crimson liquid land right in front of him. His eyes instantly go from sleepy, to wide awake! He goes to lift himself up on all fours, but notices Destiny standing over him worriedly. "Destiny! What happened? Why are you bleeding?!" he exclaims, frowning deeply in concern!

Destiny's eyes widen as well, "Howâ"do you know my name? Who are you?!" she gasps, stepping off, and a few steps away from him...

The Eevee only frowns, "Destinyâ"it's me...Darfix. Why is it you do not recognize me?" he asks, suddenlyâ"feeling a little different himself. For one thing, he was looking at her at eye levelâ"he was sitting, and so was sheâ"

"Whatâ"are you talking about? Darfix is an Umbreon!" she growls, thinking this little guy was up to no good.

The Eevee looks at her, appalled! "Did you hit your head or something, Destiny? I AM an Umbreon! I..." he stops instantly, noticing the stone sitting next to him, no longer a blue color, but more of a white hue. "Wait a second..." he says softly, trying to think of last night. He then looks down at his paws in thought---it takes him a few seconds, before suddenly, he gasps in shock! In attempt to back away from his own forepaws, he trips, and finds himself on his back!

Destiny yips, and rushes up to his side, "Are youâ"alright?" she asks, looking down at him worriedly.

The Eevee frantically looks at his forepawsâ"he begins to feel, and glance at the rest of his body... He lifts his paws up to his ears, feeling them. They were quite different indeed! "Oh myâ"I don't remember those!" he whimpers, feeling down to his differently shaped maw, and then down to his softer, less rough chest fur. "Iâ"this isn't right...I, uh..." he stammers in confusion, trailing down to his hind legs now. Destiny just watches with a quirked brow. This guy was a nut job---

The Eevee's paws trail over his bushy tail, definitely shaped differently than that of an Umbreon's. "Thatâ"isn't mine," he says, persistently...before gasping, as he trails his paw over his sheath, feeling that he is a little smaller than what he used to be. "Oh my God! That DEFINITELY isn't mine!" he yelps in shock.

Destiny backs away upon seeing the Eevee feel himself in that manner, "Uh..." she says, gritting her teeth nervously.

"Iâ"I transformed into an Eevee!?" the he exclaims hystericallyâ"pausing for a second when he notices the stone again. "...Iâ"I transformed into an Eevee!" he repeats, this time sounding excited! "It worked! Destiny! It worked!" he smiles, rushing up to her, his tail even wagging a little.

Destiny manages to piece together some of it, but not enough to make sense of it allâ"it was a known fact to wild Pokémon...de-evolution was NOT possible! "...Darfix? Isâ"that you?" she asks quietly, in a voice almost impossible to hear.

Calming down a little, he nods slowly, "...Destiny, itâ"is me..." he replies. "...but, howâ"how can youâ"undo evolution?" she asks in disbelief.

Darfix paws the stone towards her, and lies down, holding it in his forepaws, "...a Noctowl gave this to me...he, he told me, I could evolve back into an Eevee if I touched thisâ"apparently, it's some human made device..." he explains to her.

"...Darfix, why in the world would you do something like that?!" she asks in a manner in which she'd speak to a child!

Darfix's ears wilt a little, taking her question a little to heart. "...I...did it, becauseâ"I thought you feared my old form...that you would never allow yourself to get close to me, because I was scary to you..." he says, sitting back up, but slouching a little bit. "...it seems, that it didn't work at all..." he adds, sighing heavily...

Destiny looks at his sad postureâ"he did this, for her? He changed his appearance, strength, and identity, for her?! When they first started trusting each other, growing comfortable enough to swap stories of their lives, he always went on about how when he was young he wanted so badly to be an Umbreon...though he never told her why.

"Youâ"gave up, your Umbreon form...for me..." she says softly, seeming now to have discovered the consideration behind his actions. Every time he did something, that she thought was so sweet, and caring, that there was no way he could top itâ"he always would do something even sweeter, and more caringâ"even if it was slightly twisted, like the scenario they found themselves in right now.

"Iâ"just don't know what to say..." she tells him in a defeated manner, looking down at her forepaws.

Darfix slowly looks up, still slouching however. He gets up, and slowly walks over to her, moving his muzzle fairly close to her ear, but not invasively close. "...you don't have to say anything...let's just, get you cleaned upâ"those wounds look pretty deep..." he tells her in his traditional, caring voice...
