The Fairview Asassin by chrishargreaves

8th September, 2013

And so, our story begins. I can assure you that things are about to get more than a little complicated. The stage is set, our dilemma revealed, and it won't stop there. More mysteries are to be revealed, a many people you will meet in this story have been hiding something. But what? You will have to try and guess that yourselves. This is a mystery story my friends, and you, are the audience.

7:30 AM, No More Heroes Apartments

It was a serene and quiet morning. The few sounds from the town came from small Pokémon adventuring out early in the morning. Chris lay in his slumber, only to be woken by the cursed beeping of the alarm.

"Oh for the love of... sometimes I wish I could just smash that thing." He mumbled slamming his hand down on the alarm. As he struggled to pick himself up, he sighed heavily as he looked outside of his window in the quiet town below. He dragged himself through the corridor to the bathroom, trying to move quietly so he didn't wake Rina, He reached for the door.

"Morning Chris." It was Rina, of course, who had already woken up.

"Argh! Christ, don't do that Rina. You scared me for a second."

"Heh. You're up a bit earlier today. Are you going somewhere?" She queried.

"Yeah, I've got a meeting with one of my colleagues. It's at 1, but I still need to go to work." He answered, walking in the bathroom to splash some water onto his face.

"Alright then. I'll probably go out soon too; I could use some fresh air."

Chris went back into his room to get changed back into his work uniform: A black shirt, trousers and suit. He packed his brief case, with all the necessary files. Kristy was still asleep at the time, so Chris ate his breakfast in the kitchen: Some toast and orange juice.

"Let Kristy know I'll be out, ok?" Chris told Rina, as he walked out of the apartment to go to work.

"Alright Chris." Rina told herself, and went back into her room to read. While she was doing this, she noticed out of the corner of her eye, that again a figure was looking at the apartment.

"That guy again?" She muttered. When she walked to the window to get a closer look, the man abruptly walked off. She continued to read her book for another 20 minutes, until yet again she was interrupted by a different person. It was a male Blaziken, facing a different direction to the building. Rina thought nothing of it, until the most peculiar thing happened: He sprinted suddenly, and jumped from one building to the next, and carried on until he was out of sight.

"Ok, now that's just strange." Rina said, staring out of the window. She decided to stop reading her book, and go outside. On the way out, Kristy was sitting on the settee, and stared up at her.

"Where are you going?" She asked Rina.

"Oh, I'm just going out for a while. Chris is going to a meeting, so he won't be back until later. See you around." Rina replied, walking out the door. Normally, people would find it strange that a Pokémon like Rina was walking around by herself, but the people living around the apartment block had begun to get used to it now. She even got on well with the store owners, despite the fact she acts like a normal person.

10:25 AM, Jay's café, Fairview Central

"Hey Rina. You want the usual, right?" Jay greeted Rina as she walked up to the counter. "That's one sugar, with milk, right?"

"Yeah, that's the one." Rina agreed, taking her usual seat by the window. As she stared up at the surrounding buildings, she came up with an idea to find out who that Blaziken from earlier was. 'If he's jumping from building to building, maybe if I go to the roof of the apartments, I might just find him there'.

"Here you go Rina. One sugar with milk." Jay said, gently putting the cup can saucer down on the table.

"Thanks." Rina said, giving Jay the money for the coffee.

10:45 AM, Building rooftops, Fairview Central

Meanwhile, Kristy was taking her usual route over the rooftops. She particularly enjoyed being up so high for the satisfaction of being able to look down on the city. As she stared down at the people going about their daily routines, she began to hear light footsteps heading in her direction. Turning her head round to look at where the noise was coming from, she was greeted by an Umbreon.

"Strange to see someone like you up here." He quietly spoke.

"Why's that?" Kristy replied, curious about his choice of words.

"I'm not used to seeing other Pokémon up this high."

"I usually go up here every day. Looking down at the rest of the city helps pass the time."

"Fair enough."

"You're a man of few words, aren't you?"

"I don't usually to talk to strangers. What's with that thing around your neck, anyway?"

"This? Oh, this is just something my master helped make. It translates our language in to their language."

"Cool. I'll be off now." He replied, leaping off to the other buildings.

"Not really sociable, I guess." Kristy talked to herself, and she went back to walking along her normal route.

12:55 PM, No More Heroes Apartment Rooftops, Fairview City

Rina opened the door to the roof. There were two large ventilation shafts up there, and a small cupboard with nothing in it.

"Hopefully he'll be up here later..." Rina wished. She sat down in one of the chairs that were placed on the rooftops, and looked down at Burger Suplex. "Hey, isn't that Chris? So that's where he was meeting the other man with."

Chris was checking the other people to make sure nobody was taking particular attention to him, until another man, dressed in the same uniform, sat down at the table. Because of the height she was at, Rina was unable to hear what they were saying, but they were being very quiet about it. Chris was passed a sheet of paper underneath the newspaper he had put down, and immediately stuffed it in his pocket. He nodded to the other man, and followed him off to somewhere else. Rina wasn't paying much attention to her surroundings though, and was alerted by the sound of somebody jumping onto the roof. After briefly flinching, she turned around to identify the person. It was the male Blaziken from earlier, who had just stopped for a rest.

"Oh, hey there." Was all she could say to him.

"Hey. Just stopping for a rest a second." He responded, taking deep, heavy breaths.

"I thought you might stop up here."

"Heh, guess you caught sight of my little stage act then."

"Act?"

"Oh. I thought you'd heard of me before. I'm Jake, and I work with my trainer to perform something called Parkour."

"Par what?"

"Parkour. It's the act of using the urban surroundings to get from point A to B faster than many conventional methods. It's quite dangerous, but it's mainly used for physical fitness. We do it for money."

"Ah, so that's why you were jumping through the rooftops then. It's nice to meet you Jake, I'm Rina."

"Rina... where have I heard that name before... I must have forgotten, but I'm sure my master told me about you. You're the one that acts like a normal person, aren't you?"

"Yeah, that's me. Why don't you take a seat? You're probably pretty tired by now."

"Thanks." He said, taking a seat to rest. "So, I'm taking it that the collar around your neck is that new translator, right?"

"How did you know about that?" Rina asked, surprised by his knowledge of it.

"I have my sources. You ask a lot of questions, don't you?"

"Sorry if it's annoying you. I read a lot of mystery books in my spare time."

"No, it's fine. I can understand if you haven't seen me before."

They talked for quite a while, mainly about their trainers, and what they do. As time filed by, the evening began to draw in.

17:15, No More Heroes Apartment Rooftops, Fairview City

"God, it's getting late. Guess I've been talking to you too much. It's been really nice talking to you Rina. I'll meet you up here tomorrow if you want."

"Thanks Jake. I'll see you later."

With this, Jake began to leap back home over the rooftops. 'He's such a nice guy.' Rina thought to herself, as she walked back inside to Chris' apartment.

Chris' Apartment

Kristy was sat down on the chair, and woke up as Rina walked in.

"Evening Rina." She greeted her.

"Chris still isn't going to be a while, so I'll make us dinner." Rina replied, turning on the television for Kristy to watch the news.

"Thanks, Rina."

Rina thought about the day's events. Just what was that note Chris received, and who was that other man? Who's the man that's been keeping an eye on the apartments? And most importantly, why hadn't she heard of Jake the parkour Blaziken before?

As Rina placed Kristy's food bowl down for her to eat from, she sat down and listened to the news.

"And as you can see, the weather may begin to darken over the next couple of days, with some possible heavy rain showers over Fairview." The TV reported. "Thanks Ollie. And now back to our exclusive report on the Fairview Assassin: Is he really on our side? Police investigation has determined that this man may be doing more good than harm after all. Taking out many major crime lords, the good he has done is described as 'More than equal to the bad he has done to civilians.' While this will probably change the sentence if he is imprisoned, the police are still relentlessly searching for clues to arrest this man. The government sectary, Claire Williams, has released the following statement: 'We are aware of this man, and we are working hard with the police to track down who the killer may be.' The police have not commented on this statement."

"Nothing new on that killer then. Not much of a surprise, I suppose." Rina said to Kristy.

"They've got so little to work on; no modern technology is going to give them a clue on who he is."

"Oh yeah, Kristy, I was on the rooftops earlier, and I saw Chris meeting up with some other person."

"Why does this sound vaguely interesting?"

"Because something didn't feel quite right about it. They were acting very suspicious, and weren't talking much. Then, without reason, they suddenly walked off somewhere else. And there's been another man staring at the apartment block the whole time."

"... There's more to it than that isn't there, Rina?" Kristy smiled. Rina suddenly remembered that it's not that easy hiding thing if the other person you're talking to is psychic.

"...All right, I had a chat with someone else. It's nothing."

"No, it IS something Rina. You fancy him, don't you?"

"Shut up!" Rina laughed, beginning to get embarrassed. "Alright, maybe I do. He's a Blaziken named Jake, and he does something called Parkour. What was your day like?"

"I saw an Umbreon earlier on the rooftops. He's a quiet one, you know, a man of few words."

They watched the rest of the news while they ate, and Rina went to clean up. Kristy stayed to watch more of the news, until a report on Jake came on.

"Hey Rina, there's a story on your boyfriend here!" Kristy teased.

'It seems the Pokémon world has been gaining new talent lately! A Blaziken named Jake has been become a local hero of the city Fairview for his acrobatic abilities, involving the sport of Parkour. He will be performing at a show in a few days time, and tickets are running out fast, as he was spotted earlier this morning practicing on the rooftops.'

"Wow, he has his own show as well! Didn't you know about that?"

"I guess I didn't ask about it. I suppose I thought he did it for sport."

21:20, Chris' apartment

"Hey!" Chris called out as he walked in, practically throwing himself on his chair. "Sorry I took so long. The meeting took a while."

"It's ok Chris. Still no news on the assassin." Rina calmly spoke, choosing not to mention that she saw him.

"Rina has a boyfriend now!" Kristy blurted out, trying her hardest not to laugh.

"Kristy!" Rina shouted, obviously angry with her.

"Heh, who is it then?" Chris chuckled.

"You'll never guess. It's a Blaziken that does the thing called Parkour."

"Kristy..." Rina quietly spoke, becoming embarrassed now.

"It's ok Rina, Kristy's just being immature. Is this that Jake guy everyone at work's being talking about then?"

"Yeah, that's him. Anyway, I'm going to sleep now. Night Chris."

"Okay Rina." Chris went to his room to make a phone call to Ed.

"Hey Ed. You took a massive risk meeting in public today. What if someone had seen us?"

"Don't worry Chris, its ok. Nobody got suspicious, did they?"

"Yeah, but I don't want to try that again. I really don't want them to find out the truth..."

"Anyway, you have those orders. Be there in 2 days, ok?"

"Alright. See you at work tomorrow, Ed." Chris put the phone and went to sleep for the night.

So, more questions have arisen, haven't they? Why has Jake only been heard of recently if he's been around so long? What are these mysterious orders Chris was given? Who is the Umbreon Kristy met earlier? These questions are still to be answered, so make sure you keep reading. Things are about to get exciting.
