Chapter 3: The Girl
7:30
Tom put his knife and fork together on the plate. Picking up the pouch of food for Stacey, he put it in his jacket pocket, and left his plate. 'Right, let's see what Alex was reading.' He thought to himself, walking out of the dining hall. While Peter skulked by the entrance, Tom walked back into the lobby and picked up the newspaper Alex had read. Studying the contents of the page, it became obvious why Alex was reading it.
Things are not as they seem: The truth behind The Encephalon Isle incident
By Dan Millers
Recently, there has been a large storm of articles about the outbreak on Encephalon Isle, where hundreds of the world's best trainers were lost to an outbreak of a zombie virus, named 'Solonum' by scientists. It has been claimed that Chris Hargreaves, a man infamous with the authorities already was the starter of the outbreak, as reported by Ryuji Nakamora. However, this is not true as a start. Having attended the encephalopathy isle tournament myself, I can safely clear Chris' name, and I have collected the evidence to do so.
First off, there is a research facility on the island. During the military clean-up operation, a secret lab was found underground, where well-documented records of the virus had been kept, but the only thing missing was the alleged cure they had worked on for several years. Now, I ask you readers, what man would have his own secret laboratory dedicated to one virus, spend many years on a cure, and still be able to kill people back in his home town? Such a feat is impossible.
Next, a database of Secrenom members was recovered from the island. This database contained a list of every single member of Secrenom. Ryuji Nakamora and his apprentice, Samuel Hatchel, a mercenary from Boston. Sam attempted to escape with the database from the island, until his helicopter was brought to the ground in a heap of wreckage by Chris Hargreaves' clever use of pyrotechnics, and recovered the laptop again.
Both of these link back to one thing we also discovered in the database: the Government. Secrenom was a government company, so it was easy to see where their funding was coming from. But why was the government doing this? Currently, we have no idea, but we are working on this as we speak. But is the government possibly linked to something else as well, a group of criminals working behind the scenes? Next time in my series of articles covering what REALLY happened, I'll reveal the men behind the curtains, the string pullers of the modern world: Nile.
19:35
Tom finished reading the article. 'The government was behind the incident at Encephalon Isle? The bastards! So, this was the thing Alex was reading, huh? What does this have to do with Nile?' The page was littered with photos, of the arena, caves, labs, and even dead bodies, with the survivor's holdout displayed as well. Tom put the newspaper back, and stood up. As he turned to leave back to his room again, the Staff door opened, and out of it stepped the girl from earlier.
"Oh, it's you. How are you feeling?" Tom asked her, forgetting that she couldn't talk. She stared at him for a while. "Ah, sorry. Are you feeling better?" He replied, as she nodded, smiling. Tom thought for a second, until he came up with a plan to talk to her. "Hey, I've got an Idea. How 'bout you write the answers in my notebook?" The girl nodded, as Tom passed his notebook and a pen.
"OK, I'll start simple. What's your name?" Tom asked, as she scribbled in his notebook. Looking inside, he read her answers. 'Evona Bradford'. "OK, your name's Evona. Evona, can you tell me why you're out in the Fairview Plains?"
'I'm looking for someone'. Her answer said. 'Looking for somebody, huh?' "Who are you looking for?"
'I can't say.'
'Huh? Why not?' Tom pondered, before leaving the question. "OK then, that's all I have to ask you now. I'll see you around Evona." Tom collected his notebook and pen back from her, and walked back towards his room. A teenager was standing in the corridor, looking at the artwork hung on the wall. "Uh, hello there." The boy turned to face him. He was about 15 years old, with an upper class sense to him.
"Salut, je m'appelle Jean. Quel est votre nom?" He asked. Tom sighed at this. 'Christ, he's French. Come on Tom, you can't have been asleep the whole time in your French lessons!' He turned back to Jean, and managed to utter some words out:
"Pouvez-vous parler anglais s'il vous pla®t?" Tom said.
"Fine." Jean answered. He had a weak French accent, suiting how young he was, but he was very quick when speaking. "I needed to practice my English."
'Great, this guy isn't the most fluent English speaker ever then.' "What's someone like you doing out here?"
"Work. I write, and I hope to make it my job. I came here to practice English."
'If they guy's practising English, why the hell did he try speaking in FRENCH?' Tom thought, puzzled by this reasoning. "Well, if you need any help, give me a call, OK?" Entering his room, Stacey was still out. 'Bah, Stacey's still outside. Now where could she be?' Walking throughout the old corridors of the hotel, he tried to think of the most likely place she would be. 'Well, she does like rooftops. She's probably up there.'
19:45
Pushing open the steel door to the roof, he saw the woman he had insulted earlier with Stacey, stroking her fur coat as she sat in the cold autumn night.
'Shit. Now I've got to get her back from the happiest damn person in the world.' Tom thought, angry at the thought he would have to talk to her again.
"Oh, it's you. Back to insult optimism more?" She sneered at him, looking past the neon sign for the hotel and at the horizon. Stacey turned and faced Tom.
"Hey Tom!" She called out, as the woman pointed her head to glare at Tom.
"This Ninetales is YOUR pet?" She asked impolitely.
"Yes, and I'd rather you didn't refer to her as just a pet, thank you very much." Tom said, walking over to Stacey.
"Well, somebody like her is quite a contrast to the rudeness of yourself. Just goes to show how much of a prick you are." She snapped angrily.
"Hey, now THAT was uncalled for." Tom pointed out, stroking Stacey's neck softly.
"Says the man that insults the rumours that could very well happen to you. Oh how I wish they do..."
"Listen Mystic Mary, it's not some supernatural happening. There's a god damned MURDERER in this building, and I'm intent on finding out who it is." Tom yelled back, as the woman clenched her fists.
"I hope you're not trying to accuse me of murder! And my name IS Mary!" She yelled, as Tom started walking away with Stacey.
"I'm not wasting any more of my breath with you. Let's go Stacey." Tom signalled to Stacey, as they walked off the rooftops. As Tom walked back into his room, pulled out a bowl and poured out Stacey's food into it, he sat on the bed. 'Right, let's take a recap, shall we?'
'I read an article by a guy called Dan Millers. It was about the outbreak at... Cascading Isle? What ever the hell it was. It didn't have anything to do with Nile though. (So why was Alex reading it?)
Then that girl came out of the Staff area. I tried talking to her through the use of my notebook, so I found her name: Evona. I asked her why she was here, and she said she was looking for someone, but refused to say more. (Who is she looking for? And why?)
Then I went back upstairs and found a French kid. He speaks absolutely crap English, but he means good. He didn't explain why he first spoke to me in English though. (Why did he start with French if he's practising English?)
Finally, I went onto the rooftops only to meet with Miss Bastard again, but at least she wasn't happy any more.'Chapter End Notes:New Chapter Characters:
Jean - French Writer. His English is OK, but not amazing.
Hey guys, just saying there MIGHT be a second update this weekend, and next week's will come a day earlier [Insept days FTW]
