Chapter 6: Gunpoint
22:15
Tom stood completely still, already aware of who the person was. He had fully expected an encounter with them at some point, but least of all now.
"I'd have guessed you would try and pull a stunt like this off. Tell me, why are you after Chris as well?" Tom said, peering over his shoulder. His assumption was right; Mary was the one pointing the gun at him. "Actually, let me answer that myself. You're the person that's been with Nile all along, aren't you?"
"Nice guess. Yes, it was me all along. I have to say, your deductive skills have been rather... surprising, to say the least. Posing as a normal, optimistic lady staying here for a while had fooled everyone else. Except for you. You saw right through it."
"Wait, I did? That was just my general reaction to optimism."
"Say what you want Tom, but it doesn't change one thing; You still know too much to be left alive."
"Oh, I'm not so sure about that. Killing me is the last thing you want to do." Tom said, starting to think on his feet. It was his only hope of making it out of this alive, so he may even be able to convince her why she can't kill him.
"Don't bluff me Tom, I can kill you right now if I wanted to. And believe me, I do want to kill you."
"But think of all the noise Mary. Everyone will head straight for this room. And what are they going to find? Me dead, and you right beside me, with a gun. It'll blow your cover instantly."
Mary gritted her teeth angrily, refusing to accept that Tom was right. "So what? I just walk away now?"
"You can't even do that. Nile will find you, and now that your cover is blown, you're not going to be much use at all to them, are you?"
Mary hesitated for a moment, realising how rash her actions really were. Her eyes narrowed slightly though, as she pointed her gun back up at Tom.
"Nice try, But Lying isn't going to get you any further!" She exclaimed, her finger slowly squeezing down on the trigger. At this moment, the door burst open, followed by a flailing arm, a gunshot and a body hitting the floor. Alex stood in the middle of the room, facing Tom.
"Took you long enough!" Tom said. The bullet had barely skimmed his leg, being thrown into the desk. Alex had run in with impeccable timing, and with a swift knock to the back of the head, knocked out Mary. She lay on the floor, her shocked expression quickly closing, after not expecting the result after all. Alex had always been a good fighter, so it was relieving to see it come in use.
"Edwin wasn't in his office, so I came straight here. I listened in slightly, and I needed to hear the conversation fully. Perhaps it's time I came up honest with you Tom. There's a greater reason I'm after Nile."
"You mentioned that earlier, but refused to say anything about it." Tom remarked, sitting down on his bed, trying to recollect his thoughts.
"That was some bloody good stalling, by the way." Alex said, making sure Mary was unconscious.
"It wasn't easy. The damn girl's thicker than Fort Knox."
"Anyway, back to where I was. The real reason I'm after Nile is for my sister. They... they killed her when I was younger. She was 16 back then, working in the police force. She caught wind of their operations, and she was bumped off before she could do anything about it. The murder was never solved, but I had to grow up knowing the truth, and if I ever uttered a word of it, I'd be next. So I moved out here and worked at this hotel. To keep away from Nile. All my work was at vain when I hit a dead end though... all until you showed up. You've let me get back to the thing that matters the most for me, and I salute you for that Tom." Alex said. He picked up Mary and turned to leave. "I'll make sure she doesn't get out."
With Alex gone, Tom turned his attention to the letter. It was written in handwriting, that of such quality Tom hadn't seen in years. Carefully unfolding it, he slowly read the contents.
Dear Rina,
If you're reading this letter, my assumption that you are following me is correct. Stop now Rina. For your own sake, you must not continue your search for me. I'm nothing but a ghost of the man I was before, and I've changed. Changed in ways even I don't accept. I've done something I can't ever look back at, and I'm trying not to. You know what it is already if you've gotten this far. Alice is dead, A childhood friend tried to kill me, and now I've got to get rid of The Sapphire Star somehow. Go back to Fairview, start a new life there. There's nothing more I can do for you Rina. If you are truly desperate to talk to me, meet me on the rooftops of this hotel, on the 5th of November. Good luck out there.
From Chris
'So, Chris really is alive then. But who's Rina? And what about Alice? Judging by the second-to-last line, if I'm to find the truth, I've gotta head to the rooftops at midnight. But none of this has anything to do with Stacey at all...'
At this point, Tom's door slid open once again, and a shadowy figure crept in. Slow, heavy footsteps moved along the floor, eventually reaching Tom. Tom continued to stare out the window, deep in thought, completely oblivious to the intruder. The last thing he felt was a heavy object crashing down onto his back, as he fell onto the floor, unable to move. His eyes started to fade, the world slowly turning to black...Chapter End Notes:We're beginning to reach the end of our story! So, who was the mysterious attacker?
