Wolf's Hunt by boss_snikrot

Chapter 4 - A Fighter's Salvation, pt 2

Wolf didn't even think for a second as he slammed the door closed in Lance's face, leaning against it with his full weight in preparation for the inevitable attempt to force entry into the room. He didn't have to wait long, feeling the door knob being turned in his hand and pressure applied to the outside of the door, holding it closed with all of his strength. It worked, Lance unable to gain entry through Wolf, until the pressure suddenly released.

"You two, open it!" came Lance's voice through the door, and Wolf scowled. Even the short glimpse of the bodyguards he had had over their bosses shoulder was enough to tell the Elite he wouldn't be able to hold them off long.

"Mienshao, the bed!" he hissed, distracted momentarily by her gasp.

"You said you were going to help me!" she whimpered, taking a step away from him. He rolled his eyes, not in the mood to be patient.

"Move it against the door!" he clarified, trying to keep any hysteria out of his voice. She nodded, moving swiftly behind the bed and pushing it to where he was bracing the door, the trainer scurrying out of the way just as the door began to open. Their triumph was short lived as the bed crashed home, forcing it shut once more while Wolf grabbed anything he could move and used it to increase the weight of their barricade, keeping the door sealed with relative ease. Wolf and Mienshao slid down onto the floor, sharing a relieved glance at one another.

"Well, I never thought I'd see you again Wolf." Lance's voice came through the door again, no small trace of gloating infusing it. "To be honest though, I didn't think a trainer so accomplished would think to lock himself in with no way out but the one he just blocked off." Mienshao looked at Wolf, and he could see the desperation and sadness in her eyes.

"We'll get out of this, I promise." He murmured to her, resting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. She gulped nervously, nodding back. Wolf smiled, turning to the wall and raising his voice. "Don't you worry about that. I'm good at getting out of tight spots, and this isn't exactly what I'd call challenging." Wolf paused, hearing the business man laughing oddly.

"Can you believe him?" the voice came again, short chuckles punctuating the sentence. "He's trapped, with no hope of escape, and he still has the gall to mock me!" The last part went from humour to rage, and Wolf suspected that he wouldn't let himself get riled up twice. He breathed out quietly, letting his enemy talk however much he wanted while his eyes wandered around the room looking for any other possible exit. He growled quietly to himself when he realised that there was none, casting a glance back over his shoulder at the blocked off door. "...and I'll even be able to replace her with Lucky. Just imagine what your first pokemon will do to ensure your safety, Wolf." The trainer's fists clenched, and he wanted desperately to hit the gloating Lance, sighing again as he realised that he was going to have to come up with a solution soon.

There was no way in hell he was going to let him take Lucky.

Jane cursed under her breath as she ran to where the limousine was waiting, some distance away from the Deviant Resort. Solana had insisted that the limousine move away once they had been dropped off, unwilling to risk it being searched by anyone. The ex-hunter had her high heels tucked under her arm along with the tablet pc, running in no more than her stockings along the side of the dirt road and wincing every few moments as her foot landed on a stone or stick.

After what seemed like far too long, she saw the black stretch limousine sitting on the opposite side of the road, ready to pick up Wolf and Jane once they had completed their mission. As she approached, Solana exited the car and stood up, a worried expression on the veteran ranger's face.

"Jane?" she asked, frowning at the out of breath hunter before guiding her into the limousine, fetching the ex-hunter a bottle of water while Lucky looked between them anxiously. "Jane, where's Wolf?"

"Wolf..." she panted, trying to steady herself. "Wolf's... in trouble... Chardon Lance..." Solana didn't wait to hear any more, swiftly urging the driver to head back to the Deviant Resort while Lucky moved to sit next to Jane, grasping one hand in her paws.

"Chardon Lance? That scumbag who hired you to steal me?" she demanded, the ex-hunter meeting her gaze only through hard effort. "He's in on this?" Jane nodded, her breathing slowing enough for her to respond.

"He's running it." She said, taking another quick gulp of water. "But that doesn't matter right now. What matters is that Wolf is cornered right now, and he needs our help!" Lucky growled under her breath, paws clenching reflexively. If he did anything to hurt Wolf... she shook her head, trying to focus. Rushing in would only get Wolf in more trouble if resistance turned out to be more than they expected. The Lucario watched Jane as she retrieved her poke balls from her own clothing, realising that both Mewtwo and Zapdos could help.

"We already know that a large flock of Murkrow and their leader Honchkrow handle some security from the outside, so I assume that Lance must have at least one psychic type in his employ to communicate with them." Solana explained as Lucky rummaged through Wolf's bag for the poke balls. "We'll need to distract them if we're ever going to get in."

"Zapdos and Salamence can handle that." Lucky replied, seeing Jane nod her agreement. The ranger didn't need to be told twice, opening the sunroof so that Lucky and Jane could call out the respective pokemon. In a flash of white light the thunder bird and the dragon appeared above the limousine, keeping pace without thought.

"We need you two to distract the Murkrow flock that's guarding the building just ahead!" Jane called up, the pokemon nodding their assent as they surged forward to complete their mission. Two more flashes of light burst inside the limousine, Mewtwo and Wigglytuff appearing to be briefed.

"Once those two are done, we're going through the front door to unleash hell." Lucky snarled. Lance wasn't going to get away with this, and he definitely wasn't going to take Wolf away from her.

"What in the hell is that? Thunder?" Lance snapped, glaring between his silent bodyguards and the quivering Nina. "It's supposed to be sunny all day!" Lance stopped mid tirade as a new sound hit his ears. Muffled laughter.

"That's the cavalry." Wolf's voice came through the door, no shortage of smugness in it.

"Well, there's the Honchkrow at the flock's heart." Salamence called over to Zapdos, the thunder bird nodding in agreement as they headed towards the flock, a black cloud of birds flying up to meet them from the resort roof. Honchkrow wasn't difficult to spot, being almost twice the size of her subordinates and radiating an aura of arrogance as she flew up to confront them.

"You're in my airspace." She drawled as they came into hearing range, hovering with her Murkrow inbetween her and the trespassers. "So, I'm gonna need you to either surrender to me or run off home." Zapdos looked over at Salamence, narrowing his eyes knowingly. Time for the distraction.

"Your mother was a male Bellsprout and your father was an asthmatic Dunsparce!" he yelled at her, Salamence snickering at the grievous insult while Honchkrow's beak fell open.

"What?!" she shrieked, amidst the protests of her cronies. "I'll tear out your lungs for that!" Zapdos and Salamence turned tail and flew off as the Murkrow flock gave chase, using all of their aerial skill to avoid their pursuers. They watched as the limousine raced into the compound, unknown to Honchkrow and her cronies in their mad rush to catch the insolent pokemon.

"All going to plan then?" Salamence grinned over at Zapdos, getting a laugh from the legendary pokemon in response. The thunder bird almost wondered why Lucky let them have all the fun.

"Now what's going on?" the business man growled again, listening to the surprised shouts and loud banging coming from downstairs. He gestured towards the stairs, his bodyguards disappearing down them to investigate the commotion. He sneered, staring at the door again. Wolf had been nothing but bad luck for him, first refusing his money out loud for others to hear it, then capturing the pokemon hunter he'd sent after Lucky. To make matters worse, the bitch had talked like a Chatot about everything that had transpired between them, forcing him to dismantle his operations in Sinnoh and the surrounding regions rather than face law enforcement. Now his Unova operation was all he had left at the moment, forced even to abandon the Lance Industries front for his business.

"Sir, do you think-" Nina was cut off mid sentence as Lance slapped her, an angry red mark appearing on her cheek as she fell to the ground.

"Shut up!" he yelled. "If you don't keep your damn trap shut I'll have to fire you, and you know what that means!" The receptionist slid away from him, one hand on her cheek and trying not to say anything more. She knew exactly what being fired in this business meant. He paced around in front of the door, shooting a filthy look at it every so often.

He wouldn't be stopped by Wolf this time. He smirked to himself, picturing just what the trainer's Lucario was worth to him. He knew many people who would gladly pay a small fortune for a mere half an hour with her, but he was more tempted to keep Lucky for his own personal use.

"A fitting revenge." He muttered to himself, ignoring Nina and imagining what would soon be his.

Lucky unleashed another aura sphere at the next pair of rushing goons, the detonation of the life energy blast sending them crashing into the wall only to land in a tangled heap on the floor. Once the five of them had exited the limousine she had surged ahead, desperate to help Wolf as quickly as possible. Even as another guard leapt at her, taser at the ready, she violently smashed her paw into his midsection, doubling him over like he was nothing harder than a fly.

The Lucario stopped in her rampage as she heard multiple clicks behind her, turning to see several more guards standing some distance away from her with guns levelled. She narrowed her eyes hatefully, her paw clenching as she prepared to attack anyway. Even as she breathed deeply, ready to charge, a soft blue glow began to surround them all and the guards were lifted off their feet only to fly across the entrance hall and land in a pile on one side. She turned to see Mewtwo lowering her arm, with Jane, Wigglytuff and Solana moving to catch up with her.

"Lucky, don't go running ahead like that!" Jane said breathlessly. "Do you have any idea what Wolf will do to me if I let anything happen to you?" Lucky smiled wearily, checking her impetuosity as the message sank in. They needed to stay together to help Wolf, and right now that was all she could think of.

"Alright." Lucky replied, taking a deep breath to calm herself. "Which way?"

"Mienshao, can you use force palm?" Wolf asked, waiting until the pokemon nodded her affirmation before smiling. He beckoned her onto the bed, moving until they were both next to the door before miming to her what he wanted. She nodded again, placing her hand on the door like he had shown her and unleashing her force palm to blast it off its hinges, the rich wooden door crashing against the one opposite it in a hail of dust and splinters. Even as Lance adjusted to the sudden shock, Wolf stepped out of the room and smirked at him.

"I heard your bodyguards leaving, so I guess this one's just you and me." Wolf said, cracking his knuckles. "I hope you weren't expecting any forgiveness for the first time you tried to take Lucky from me, 'cause all you're gonna get is my foot up your ass." Lance snarled wordlessly at him, mimcking the trainer's guard pose with all the finesse of a pacifist. Wolf grinned, knowing that this would be an easy fight.

"You're one cocky son of a bitch, you know that?" Lance said, charging in to try and punch the Elite as hard as he could. Wolf didn't even bat an eyelid, swaying gently to one side before unleashing his own attack, using Lance's own movement to smash his fist into the older man's face, snapping his head back and drawing a trickle of blood from his nose. He didn't get a chance to recover, Wolf moving under his sloppy guard to keep battering away at his opponent, always keeping him on the back foot.

"You learn to fight pretty quickly when the alternative's being hit by a Machoke!" Wolf said inbetween blows, hammering three quick blows into his jaw before getting to work on his chest and gut, the first punches aimed to subdue Lance while the ones after kept him from doing anything but acting as a punching bag. After a minute of this punishment Wolf drew back a metre, getting the measure of his opponent. Lance swayed drunkenly on his feet, blood pouring from his nose as he clutched at his lower ribs, before falling on his side to do little more than moan in pain. Wolf only took his eyes off the downed man as Lucky appeared at the top of the stairs, the Lucario rushing over to wrap him up in a warm hug. They didn't have to wait long for the others to catch up, Jane coming around the corner first to see Lance in a broken pile next to Wolf

"So, I guess I got off easy, huh?" she asked dryly, before being joined by Mewtwo, Wigglytuff and Solana. The ranger didn't spare any thought for how Lance came to be that way, instead whipping out the handcuffs she'd brought along for just such a situation.

"Not really." Wolf said, moving over to him with Lucky in one arm, Mienshao hovering uncertainly behind them. "You might have tried to steal Lucky, but I'm still not going to bash a woman. Enough about that anyway, let's go and free the other pokemon!"

***

The trial had been very quick, resulting in a ten year imprisonment for Lance and anyone associated with the Deviant Resort either as staff or patron. Solana had tried for a harsher sentence, though she was given access to all the profits generated by his resort to be donated to the Ranger Union and other pokemon welfare groups. The judge had also decided that Wolf had acted in a manner which had the pokemon's best interests at heart, and was pardoned on all charges including his ill thought out assault.

Wolf himself was sitting outside the court house, mercifully away from any media focus thanks to having his identity omitted from the records and no public admittance. Lucky and Jane sat next to him, the ex-hunter trying to comfort him, hoping that the sex with Mienshao hadn't affected him too deeply. He shrugged it off for her benefit, more concerned for the fighting type than himself.

"You sure you're going to be okay?" Jane asked for the umpteenth time. Wolf nodded, hoping that Jane would let it go. He was spared having to say anything by a shadow falling over him, the Elite turning around to see Mienshao standing behind him, shuffling awkwardly.

"Wolf, I..." she began. "I wanted to ask you a favour." Wolf gave her a gentle smile, turning further to show that he was listening. "I... can I stay with you? I mean, it's just that you're the first person to ever care about me..." She trailed off as Wolf got to his feet and gave her a hug, the pokemon flinching at first until she realised that he was just being nice.

"Of course you can, Mienshao." He replied, the fighting type feeling her heart leap at his acceptance. He felt her arms wrap tightly around him, returning the hug with a grateful one of her own. "Seems like a whole new life, doesn't it? Tell me, how would you feel if I named you Kai?" She looked up at him with a broad smile, though he knew the sadness in her eyes would take a long time to dispel.

"I'd love it." Kai murmured into his chest, glad that for the first time in her life she had a true friend.
