Who Are We (Part 8)?

"It's gone all pear shaped again."

By the time I had gotten out of the shower Zoe's info had been located. But it had taken longer than it should have I thought. All it told me was that she was sixteen, which was legal here, though only just. I went to the next room where both the girls were sleeping, wrapped in each others arms, but clothed which was good I thought as I tipped them out of bed.

"You pair have some explaining to do. And can do it while we're walking today." I snapped as I threw their bags to them. I walked outside and looked around, everything was quiet, and if we hurried we could be at the meeting by tomorrow evening and decide what to do.

The girls came out before long and we kept on walking, something I was well and truly used to by now I figured until I saw the mountains at midday.

"You're just upset because you didn't get a say in the matter, aren't you?" Kaela asked as she caught up.

"There is a passage through it, but I think we're going to have to go over, passing through would be too risky, team Rocket would probably have figured out by now we've gone renegade on them, and trapping us in a dark cave would be a great coup because we couldn't risk using any of your attacks, or even my weaponry, and in hand to hand they could drag us down eventually." I said, Kaela just nodded.

"And yeah, that might be it, there is legality issues between humans where age is concerned. I don't even want to think of the issues involved in human pokémon relationships. Next time let me have a say in the matter, that means something to both of you. Zoe we're going to have to go over, we can't afford to get caught inside the tunnel."

"It'll be rough, the tunnel is the easiest way through, and was made because no crossing over was accomplishable without a fair degree of risk. But you'll be able to make it I bet." She said, sounding a little anxious.

"Well we'll make camp at the base, and start over around midnight. It'll be a dark night so we can risk using our jump capabilities." I said, and we continued walking.

Eventually when we reached the mountain range we camped about a kilometre away from the tunnel entrance. We all slept lightly that night until it was time to get up and move again, we packed up quickly and between Kaela in her proper form and myself we carried Zoe and began to leap up the mountain, it wasn't really steep but the altitude was a problem, the air was way too thin, and Zoe looked near to passing out when we reached the peak.

"All downhill from here." I panted, even if I'd been wearing my armour I doubted I would have had sufficient breathable oxygen at this altitude. We leapt again, a tight low arc that ended with us sliding down the mountain rapidly. We leapt again and then braked sharply as something lit up the sky and pierced Zoe's shoulder. As she screamed in pain we found cover.

"Kaela, tend her wound. I'm going to find whoever shot her." I said as I pulled on my helmet and leapt over our shielding rock wall and began running dodging fire from whatever the weapon was, I'd see a pinpoint of light briefly and then the air would light up, it was some sort of tight beam energy weapon, but it couldn't have been a laser they didn't produce a visible beam and this weapon did. I could still hear Zoe screaming with the pain, it had heated the air a bit so it was probably the secondary heat damage which had caused most of the pain. May whatever this sniper believe in keep her from dying or his death would surpass hers in agony.

I closed the distance quickly but whoever this was, he took off quickly from his position nearly as quick as I could have, I gave chase. Finally able to see him I shot a hole in the ground in front of him, he skipped over it and kept running until my next shot hamstrung him. Looking down on him, I was filled with remorse, he was like me, a victim of team Rocket, one of his arms had been replaced with that beam weapon that had hit Zoe. No wonder he'd been able to run so fast, he had augmentation that was not as advanced as my own, but still pretty heavy. He was obviously one of Giovanni's earlier conversions, brainwashed and reprogrammed to boot. I sighed heavily, I couldn't let him go, and couldn't keep him with us, I doubted we could remove the conditioning, which meant he'd always be dangerous to us. I accepted a compromise figuring that without his weaponry he'd be useless I removed the weapon that had replaced his arm and melted the connections, repairing them would likely take a long time if it could be done at all I figured, and meant this unconscious attempted assassin would be out of action for a while. I leapt back up the hill to where Zoe and Kaela were still hiding. Zoe was sitting up with a thick bandage on her shoulder, covering both ends of the hole.

"You dealt with him?" Kaela asked.

"Yeah he was an earlier conversion, he won't be shooting any girls for a while. This weapon is nasty, you should smell the ozone on the way down, the air is pretty humid. You upto moving Zoe? We can't stay here, his backup can't be far away." Zoe nodded and managed to put her arms painfully around our necks and we began our approach to the city anew, when we reached the city it was nearing dawn, Kaela and I made ourselves presentable as regular humans and carried Zoe into the hospital.

My friends met us there later while we were waiting for Zoe to be cleared to leave, the doctor had questioned us, and seemed convinced with our half truth, some strange Pokn had attacked her with an odd attack, we'd been unable to indentify it, even when he showed us a chart. He'd shrugged and left, unknown Pokn were hardly unheard of. I had the weapon in my pack until I could examine it properly.

"You will need to go into hiding as soon as possible, give Giovanni some time to begin to lose interest in finding you both. Take the girl with you if you must, but stay at the house, you know the one we mean?" I nodded, a house so far removed from civilisation it had to provide everything for itself, and completely isolated and unknown outside of this group. We'd be safe there, give Giovanni a while to forget about us, and then go on the offensive, but taking Zoe with us was something I both had to and didn't want to do, she wasn't safe from team Rocket, and Kaela and I were rather fond of her already so was a weakness to us if she was taken, no better she came with us and was presumed lost for now. I looked at Kaela who merely nodded, she understood why she had to come with us, and hardly had any objections.

We stayed in the city for a few days before Zoe was finally released, and she looked a little concerned when she did so. The doctor in the end explained why.

"We did a final blood analysis this morning, she's pregnant. Only has been a few days since she conceived, so the attack didn't cause any threat to the developing embryo. Whoever the father is should either be shot for getting such a young trainer pregnant, or put in jail. She's barely legal by our laws you do realise that?" I nodded. Yes I certainly did.

"Yes, but then the affair was at her instigation, and as far as I know it was her only time in bed with a man. We can't change what happened doctor, but thankfully she's alive and well which should be your primary concern, not whether she is mature enough to make a decision about when and who she sleeps with, she is physically and mentally capable of making that choice I personally believe, and we'll make certain she comes to no harm until after the baby is born if she doesn't wish to have an abortion."

"No Seb, I don't. And I would be glad to live with you and Kaela, can we tell my parents I'm ok before we go though?" I nodded, the doctor was not so happy.

"She can't continue on any sort of journey, or she runs a high risk of miscarrying."

"We weren't planning on any more travelling for now anyway, so she'll be at no risk of injury other than what can occur normally in a household. You have my word, we're heading to my home this evening, we all need a break we've been away for too long." The doctor nodded relieved, and left us.

"So I can stay with you?" I nodded and handed her some money.

"Call your parents, tell them what you want. But make it clear you'll probably be out of contact for a year or more, but you're with friends who will look after you until the next time you can call at the very least. We need to leave in half an hour, our ride can't afford to wait any longer." I said and began to make certain all of Zoe's clothes and personal items were packed up properly. She got back quickly smiling and hugged me careful of her shoulder.

"I love you guys. And my parents were fine after I told them I was going to be staying with some friends doing some training before going back on my journey, just my friends didn't have a phone and I would be too busy training to come into town when you bought groceries. That worked, how I'm going to tell them about our baby I have no idea." I hugged her back and Kaela joined in.

"We'll sort that out when it's time, but now we must go." And I led the way outside to the waiting car, which took us to the airport and a private helicopter which would take us to near the safe house and leave again until it was required to return.

End of part 8.

And thus ends the first part of the story. When I finish writing part 9 we'll see what happens in the future.
