Heat of the Pokemon League: Chapter Two: Secret Evolution

The Day After, Round Two:

Nick was again waiting with his companions patiently as the 32 surviving members from the second round were slowly selected as the day wore on. Ash had gone far earlier in the day, knocking the stuffing out of an aerial Pokemon specialist with a 2 to zero win. Now, it was finally Nick's turn.

"Nick and Steven, your match will begin in 10 minutes in the fire arena."

Nick and Steven happened to be sitting next to each other, and both could tell the other was a good sportsman, and so they had no qualms with it. Both stood as they were greeted by their assistants. Nick turned to Steven and extended his hand.

"May the best man and his companions win."

Steven smiled and took Nick's hand, shaking it firmly.

"Indeed."

With that, both boys and in Nick's case, his companions set off to their separate choosing rooms. To be frank, Nick was at a disadvantage here. Steven knew all of his Pokemon, while Nick only knew that Steven had a Rapidash. Even assuming Steven used his Rapidash, and Nick used Justin, Justin would be beaten into the ground thoroughly. Justin was just too slow to keep up with a Rapidash's insane speed and the first part of the battle would be decided in Steven's favour, and they all knew it. However, he had an idea.

"Kyu, mind taking pole position?"

Kyu smirked and shook her head.

"Fight fire with fire, as our kind has always said."

Nick nodded in agreement. That just left one more choice. He looked among his companions, finally settling on Shadow.

"You up for it, Shadow?"

Shadow gave a feral toothy smile and nodded his horned head, stepping forward next to Kyu. Nick smiled and nodded at both of them.

"Let's go, Shadow, Kyu."

Both of them nodded and they left to take the lift upwards to the fire arena.

In the Arena:

And now ladies and gentlemen, the final battle for today will begin, Nick will compete with Steven to progress to round three of the tournament. Both contestants are allowed to compete with two of their Pokemon in a no holds bar match. Both of the contestants have shown good sportsmanship, so we can expect to see the same here today. And both contestants are now being raised into the stadium."

As the platforms rose into the stadium, the crowds' roars of approval increased ten fold as Nick put a hand on Kyu's head and both of them closed their eyes to begin syncing. The blue and red auras around them quickly merged into a vivid violet colour before they stopped and Kyu jumped the railing, stepping into the field that was surrounded by torches and a pit of molten rock. Steven took a Pokeball out and threw it into the arena.

"Come forth, Rapidash!"

From the Pokeball came Steven's almost 6 foot tall 209 pound flaming horse. It was awe inspiring to say the least. Both awaited the signal to begin, and the second it was given, both combatants flashed from view and collided in the centre of the ring in a dead lock, shoulder against shoulder. Both of them broke off and returned, sizing each other up. All of them considered their options before Kyu flashed out of view again, and Rapidash followed suit. They collided again, however, this time, Rapidash scored a direct hit to Kyu's side with it's horn, piercing deep into her side making both her and Nick howl in pain and were sent skidding to their respective walls. Nick gripped his side and coughed up a mouthful of blood, which Kyu mirrored. Nick stood up, panting and considered their options. Finally, he decided to try a new move they had yet to battle test.

"Kyu... Blaze of Glory..."

Kyu nodded and stood again, pulling one of her favourite berries from its hiding place in one of her tails and swallowed it whole, recovering enough energy to execute this move. Kyu closed her eyes and their aura brightened considerably. Steven's eyes narrowed.

"Rapidash! Don't let them do it!"

Rapidash pawed the ground and flared it's mane as it charged in. However, what it didn't expect was for Kyu's aura to change back to red and for her to literally catch alight and race off to the side of the arena, emitting a the sound of a roaring firestorm behind her and a trail of fire behind to boot. As Kyu reached the low wall that prevented most Pokemon flying to their dooms in the molten sea bellow, she bounded off it and ran along it, circling the arena once, twice, three times, and then darting across the arena to a seemingly random point on the wall. Rapidash reared up on its hind hooves as it was encased in a wall of flames. As Kyu continued to bound off the walls, it became clear that she was tracing a pattern. A nine pointed star, to be exact. People in the audience were shocked speechless at this, wondering what exactly the point of this attack was when they found out. Once Kyu completed the ninth point, she jumped up into the air, barrel rolling as she sailed straight towards the centre, where Rapidash was standing. Steven's eyes widened in horror as Kyu collided with Rapidash and the true attack was unleashed. The flames Kyu had left behind her flashed white and roared as they shot upwards, incinerating the entire arena, making people cry out and shield their eyes from the scorching heat. The flames slowly died down, revealing both combatants still standing, hanging on by a sliver. Nick knew that Kyu was in no position to continue and so he pulled a special medicine out of his pocket and threw it to her.

"Kyu, retreat for now."

Kyu nodded weakly and caught the small piece of medicine, swallowing it whole, feeling it fill her with a small amount of energy that allowed her to retreat back to Nick's side before collapsing. Steven seemed to be having the same idea.

"You've done well, Rapidash. Return."

Steven returned Rapidash to its Pokeball and reclasped it to his belt, pulling his second one off and increasing its size to normal. Nick had during this time been syncing with Shadow, and now their black and blue auras were a deep shade of red. Shadow jumped down into the ring and awaited his opponent. Steven threw his last Pokeball into the arena.

"I choose you, Onyx!"

The towering behemoth that was Onyx stared down at its opponent as Shadow growled and charged in. The Onyx batted it away, with its tail causing Nick to fall to his knees from his previous injuries while Shadow barked indignantly, suffering only a minor scrape and lunged forward again, however, this time Shadow faded into a black mist that sprung from no where. The mist condensed around the shocked Onyx who took this time to burrow into the molten earth to avoid whatever it was Shadow was planning. Nick looked up and smirked weakly.

"That won't help..."

Steven's eyebrow cocked in interest.

"How so?"

Nick slowly got to his feet and pointed at the ground, the black mist seeping into it. Not long after they could hear Onyx let forth a roar of pain and shot back to the surface, staring at the black mist which slowly began to take a rough shape in front of it. It was then that the mist's piercing yellow eyes opened and a mouth of saliva coated teeth was opened, laughing ominously at the Onyx who seemed frozen in fear by something other than the laugh. The mist floated back to the ground and recondensed into Shadow, who was breathing heavily. The attacks had obviously taken a lot of his strength to perform. Shadow ran in, jumping up onto the still paralysed Onyx's back. Steven was getting increasingly worried.

"Onyx! What's wrong?"

Shadow made the final leap up onto the rocky joint between Onyx's head boulder and it's next one, slashing at it repeatedly with its razor sharp claws. However, it was having little effect. Onyx seemed to be slowly awakening from its vision, and so Shadow ended it early, biting down on the joint and breathing a fire blast into it, making the Onyx roar in pain and fall to the ground, unconscious, if not more. Shadow jumped down and skidded to a halt, panting heavily. While both trainers had at least one Pokemon left, Steven's Rapidash was in no condition to fight. Steven sighed and withdrew Onyx to its Pokeball and smiled sadly.

"My Onyx is unconscious and my Rapidash is not far off it. On those grounds, I'm forfeiting this match and therefore the tournament."

Nick nodded and waited for the Judge to make it official.

"Steven has voluntarily withdrawn from the match due to his Pokemon's inability to continue. The winners are Nick, Kyu and Shadow."

The crowd roared its approval but stopped as Nick hesitantly leapt the barrier and walked slowly across the scorching arena to the middle. Steven also jumped down and walked to meet Nick in the middle. Both boys extended their hands and took the other, shaking it firmly. Steven smiled.

"The best man did indeed win. Congratulations Nick."

Nick smirked and withdrew his own hand as Steven loosened the grip on it.

"You nearly had me, so don't put you or your companions down, Steven."

Steven nodded and smiled as both turned to walk back to their respective exits, calling over his shoulder.

"Nick, a favour if I may?"

Nick smiled as he struggled to keep up his stoic appearance.

"What would that be?"

"Win the competition for me."

Nick smiled widely and climbed the small rear staircase to his stand, facing Steven as the stands began lowering back into the waiting rooms.

"I'll see what I can do."

Steven nodded gratefully as their eyes lost sight of each other. Once the door over the roof closed, Nick coughed and clutched his side, falling to his knees. Shadow was immediately beside him, trying to inspect the wound, but Nick shook his head.

"I'm fine, Shad-"

Nick coughed up a large chunk of blood and continued coughing all the way down to the waiting room. Once the lift door opened, he wasn't surprised to see that there was not only a human paramedic, but a nurse Joy as well. Both of them came into the lift and assessed the damage to Kyu, Shadow and Nick. Once the paramedic gave Nick a quick once over, he shook his head in disbelief.

"I'll be damned if I know how you managed to stand at all once you received this injury..."

Nick shook his head and snorted weakly.

"I've had far worse than this before."

The man shook his head and pulled out a stretcher and started calling for backup when Nick put a hand over his, making him stop.

"I have the right to refuse treatment, no matter how serious the damage is. Tell me something first. How long is it going to take to get me anywhere near able to fight again?"

The man cocked an eyebrow but answered anyway.

"At least 3 days, depending on how well your body responds."

Nick shook his head and slowly stood again.

"I'm refusing any treatment whatsoever. We don't have three days to spare. I'll fix myself as best I can."

The paramedic nodded reluctantly and stood, stepping back to allow Nick through, where he was greeted by his four remaining companions. All of them looked fearfully at there human friend, worried about his health, which Nick waved off.

"You all know I've had worse and recovered in less time than 3 days. I'll be fine."

Nick turned around and looked at Nurse Joy administering some form of medicine orally to Kyu. Whatever it was, it was potent. Kyu was up and awake almost instantly. Nick gave Nurse Joy a questioning glance.

"What exactly did you give her? I've never seen anything like it."

Nurse Joy smiled brightly and showed Nick the now empty bottle. The label read 'elixir'.

"It's a new medicine that we've been developing with the help of several Pokemon professors from around the world. It fully restores a Pokemon's health and vitality as well as its energy. Unfortunately, the ingredients are too expensive to mass produce them."

Nick nodded and rummaged around in his own pack for his own personal first aid kit. Once he found it, he pulled it out and flipped open the top, and pulled several things out, which included several types of medicine and a syringe. He jabbed the syringe needle into one of the bottles and drew half a tube full of the clear liquid. He lightly pressed the needle's tip to his bicep and punctured the skin, injecting the substance before drawing the needle out and placing it back into a disposal bag for later and then popped the cap off the other bottle and consumed one of the small brown pills. The effects of the pain killer he had injected quickly took effect, making his knees sag slightly, but at least the pain was gone. Nick hated all forms of medication and drugs, including caffeine. However, at times he knew if he didn't take select ones, he would die. One of those select times was now. Nick's knees finally gave way and he collapsed, the darkness finally enveloping him.

That Evening:

Nick slowly came to, still groggy from the effects of the pain killers and the rapid healing drug he had used. It was a modified form of a Full Restore, and seemed to work quite well on humans. He felt something shift lightly to his right, and he let out a strangled gurgle as he felt a soft furry appendage gently brush over his chest.

"Nick, are you alright?"

Nick smiled slightly at the sound of his concerned companion turned mate's voice. Slowly he opened his eyes and once they had adjusted to the room's lack of light, he slowly turned over to his right and nodded slowly, not trusting his voice. He felt Kyu's muscles relax slightly. The corners of his lips turned up slightly, in an attempt to smile as he slowly rose a hand up and placed it to where he suspected Kyu's muzzle was. He felt a dull sense of pressure that told him he had made contact, and Kyu's soft contented purr and nuzzling against his hand was all the indication he needed that he'd found the mark.

"As well as I can be, I guess..."

Kyu smirked and gently got up and placed herself on top of Nick's chest, careful to avoid his internal wound. Nick could see Kyu's eyes sparkling in mischief when she purred softly.

"Nick... Are you well enough?"

Nick caught on instantly what Kyu had implied and blushed, which was hidden by the darkness.

"You will have to stimulate me..."

Kyu nodded. She wouldn't be surprised that thrusting would only injure him further. Nick could feel his manhood beginning to stir and Kyu's breathing rate increased. The remaining 16 competitors were waiting for their turn to be announced, and many of them wondering where Nick and his companions were when the door opened and they walked in. Nick took a quick look around the room before taking a seat next to Ash. The way the tournament bracket was turning out, it seemed that many of the remaining trainers were facing others who specialised in their major weakness. Both Ash and Nick were no exception. Nick gently brushed a hand over his hip bag, making Ash looked at him in concern.

"How is your wound?"

Nick shrugged and smiled.

"As normal, I should be six feet under. But I have a habit of telling the grim reaper to go bother someone else because I'm too busy to die yet..."

Ash was unsure of what to make of this but when Nick smiled and chuckled, Ash saw he was trying to be humorous and smiled back. Shortly after, Ash was called up for his match with a fire specialist in the fire arena. Nick wished him luck, knowing his fight was up right after this one. The only thing that stopped Ash and Nick from battling next round was that they were in opposite divisions of the ladder, the ones between them having already been knocked out. Nick smiled when Ash managed to gain a two to three victory over his opponent. Shortly after, it was Nick's turn.

"Nick and Cindy, your match will begin in 10 minutes in the Ice Arena. Please follow your attendants to your waiting rooms."

While Cindy was very young, barely into her teens, she was a well respected Ice Pokemon specialist. Both of them followed their attendants to their rooms where Nick turned to them and flopped down on the chair, wincing slightly at the pain.

"The obvious two choices is Shadow and Kyu, however, I chose both of you last time so if you want, I can give you a rest for this match."

Shadow nodded gratefully but Kyu shook her head.

"No, I wish to fight in this battle."

Nick nodded and looked over the others, thinking carefully.

"Justin, just to throw them off, do you want to take the lead?"

Justin smiled and nodded. That left one, so Nick turned to Kure and glanced at her questioningly. She nodded and walked up to Justin and Kyu. Nick smiled and stood, the waiting time now drawing to a close.

"Shall we?"

The three chosen nodded and walked with Nick to the lift and prepared themselves as it slowly began to rise upwards to the arena.

In the Arena:

"And now ladies and gentlemen, this is the second last match of the rounds before the quarter finals and it promises to be a spectacular one! The contestants are Cindy the Ice Maiden and the young prodigy Nick, give them a warm welcome!"

The roar of the crowd trebled as the doors opened and the contestant stands rose into the frigid arena. Nick looked up at Justin and placed a hand on his side as they both closed their eyes, their blue auras merging before Justin jumped into the arena, causing a small shock wave. Cindy's right eyebrow rose and she picked a Pokeball of her belt.

"I choose you, Weavile!"

Many of the people gasped as a Pokemon obviously related to Sneasel was sent out. Nick sighed and shrugged.

"I should have expected something like this from a master of Ice... I always did think Sneasel evolved..."

Cindy smirked.

"You're pretty sharp... Yes, Weavile is the evolved form of Sneasel."

The judged gave the word to begin and Weavile just vanished, making Nick smirk.

"I have some surprises as well... Justin, how about we get rid of these hiding places?"

Justin smiled and fell to the ground, drawing into his shell and brining only his left cannon out. Cindy's eyes narrowed as the cannon started glowing before releasing a Hyper Beam straight through the arena in front of him. However, what she didn't expect was that Justin would start spinning, completely obliterating anything above ground level. Justin quickly slowed and stood up, panting. Many people just stared in disbelief at Justin's power when Weavile reappeared behind him, ready to strike him when he turned around and slugged it straight in the stomach, sending it flying into the water in the middle of the arena where it struggled before finally pulling itself out and panting. Justin brought his cannons to bare when Cindy withdrew the wounded Weavile and brought her next one out.

"The enemy is weak, finish him Glalie."

Cindy threw her poke ball into the arena, from which one of the largest Glalie Nick had ever seen emerge. Glalie started charging its ice attack while Justin charged his water attack. Both fired their beams at each other and when they met, Justin's beams of water were instantly frozen solid as they fell to the ground and shattered. What was most concerning though was that his cannon nozzles had frozen over, making them essentially useless. There was nothing more Justin could do besides getting himself hurt so Nick called him back, all the while beginning to sync with Kure, her white aura mixing with his blue one to make a very light blue as she hopped into the arena.

"Glalie! Winter's Bite!"

Glalie exhaled and created a solid wall of sleet that covered the entire arena. Kure growled indignantly as she was pelted with shards of Ice. What was most worrying was that Glalie was no where to be seen. Kure gave an instinctual horse kick, feeling it connect with a solid wall of ice before she bounded away, having stopped Glalie from taking a giant bite our of her rump. What she didn't expect though was that Glalie somehow managed to again get behind her and rammed her with its obsidian horns, making her and Nick cry out in pain.

"This is bad..."

Cindy's laugh could be heard over the dull roar of the storm.

"You've lost this. Face it."

The storm died down to reveal Kure limping back to Nick's side. Nick took a deep breath and placed a hand on Kyu's head, quickly syncing with her and whispered to her, just loud enough for her alone to hear.

"I'm counting on you love..."

Kyu nodded and bounded into the arena not even stopping as she streaked at Glalie and appeared right in front of it, unleashing a potent ball of fire that melted a decent section of its icy body as it screamed in pain before falling to the ground and returning to the Pokeball. Cindy was still smiling as she brought out her last poke ball.

"I didn't say you've lost to bluff. Walren, I choose you!"

Nick groaned mentally as the giant walrus Pokemon was unleashed and it bounded into the water before disappearing. Nick's eyes widened as he saw what Cindy's plan was and gave Kyu the message to keep moving. He hadn't done it a moment too soon either, as the ground where she had been just a second ago burst into a fountain of frigid water. Kyu continued dodging the attacks when Nick realised their next problem. Walren would eventually just destroy the entire surface of the arena. At this rate, Cindy would indeed win. Nick carefully weighed his options before straightening and sighing. Cindy smirked.

"Give up?"

Nick reached around into his hip pocket.

"Hardly. However, with this method, even I don't know what will happen. For all I know, this arena could be obliterated along with everyone in it. Hell, the universe could implode for all I know."

Kyu looked at Nick in disbelief.

"Nick... Are you suggesting..."

Nick nodded and withdrew his hand from the bag, holding a brightly shining pink stone.

"Kyu, you do realise at this rate it's only a matter of time until you die, and me along with you, right?"

Kyu looked around the arena and nodded.

"This is our only option left. Do you want to try it?"

Kyu carefully weighted her options before nodding slowly. Nick smiled and threw the stone to Kyu.

"Good luck, Kyu..."

Kyu caught the stone with her tail and flashed white. Cindy's eyes widened in disbelief.

"She's..."

"Evolving? Yes. Kyu is the world's first case of an evolving Ninetails. As some say 'you saw it here first, folks'."

Kyu's form began to change as she stood up on her hind legs, her body becoming more humanlike, as well as taller. Finally, the white glow faded to reveal Kyu's new form, a humanoid nine tailed fox with flaming tail tips, flaming mane and chest ruff. Many people looked on in amazement as Kyu's fists started flaming and she threw a couple of experimental punches. Kyu smiled as she looked down at the floor.

"You may be in your element now, but what if I remove your element completely?"

Kyu placed her hands together and began charging a massive ball of fire as she leapt into the air, avoiding another water geyser before unleashing her attack.

"Soul Fire!"

The ball of fire was unleashed straight into the water and exploded violently, making everyone cover their eyes except Nick who squinted. When the light returned to normal, people gasped to see the entire pool of water had completely evaporated. Kyu dropped to the ground lightly and charged the stunned Walren, her fists catching alight as she unleashed a devastating fiery punch combo to its blubbery belly, making it howl in pain and eventually pass out. Kyu put her hands to her hips and smirked as it was withdrawn and Cindy just looked at Kyu in disbelief, who looked back at her sternly, her red eyes boring into Cindy's ice blue ones.

"We cannot and will not be beaten. You became arrogant and that was your downfall."

Cindy sighed and slumped her shoulders.

"I forfeit."

The judge made it official.

"Cindy has forfeited the match, making Nick and his party the winners."

People were still too stunned from the sudden chain of events to cheer, so those who could just clapped as Kyu used the corners of the once submerged arena walls to jump back up to ground level and from there to Nick's podium where she touched Justin's frozen cannons and thawed them. Justin nodded gratefully as they were lowered back into the waiting room. Nick turned around and looked at Kyu appreciatively.

"You really do look beautiful..."

Nick wasn't the only one to notice a slight flush of the skin under the fur of Kyu's cheeks.

"Thank you..."

As the lift reached the waiting room, Shadow, Cid and Yuan looked in amazement at Kyu. Yuan jumped off the couch and padded up to her, looking upwards into her red eyes.

"Amazing..."

Kyu smiled down at her Espeon friend.

"Thank you Yuan."

Nick rubbed his lower back where Kure had been rammed and pulled a snap cold pack out of his bag and twisted it, hearing the snap and placing it on his lower back and felt the relief rush through his back. What worried Nick was that there had been no Nurse Joy present to tend to his companion's wounds. He shrugged and walked to the door and opened it and fell back in surprise when his personal space was suddenly invaded by far too many eager reporters. All of them started speaking far too fast to understand anything they said. Nick just got back up and folded his arms, not saying anything until the questions finally stopped. Nick looked at them in an amused manner.

"Surely all of you have realised that I'm not answering for at least one reason. Firstly, I didn't understand a single word any of you asked and secondly, my companions need access to medical treatment. I'll answer your questions later, but for now, please step aside."

The reporters slowly shuffled aside and they walked through when Kure collapsed, making Nick turn around and pick her up, checking for any form of life threatening injury. Luckily, it was due to exhaustion and so Nick carried her outside followed by his other companions with Kyu at his side as they walked straight to the Ever Grande Pokemon Centre, very aware they were the centre of attention the whole way.

Inside the Pokemon Centre:

It seemed that the Nurse Joy in charge of the Ever Grande Pokemon Centre had requested for an Officer Jenny and her Arcanine partner to be present to hold the reporters at bay in advance for when Nick arrived. Officer Jenny nodded at Nick.

"Nick, please go straight inside, Nurse Joy is waiting for you and your companions."

Nick nodded in thanks and walked straight inside the front sliding doors where most of the trainers from that day's matches as well as some others were present. All of them looked at Nick, or more specifically, Kyu in amazement. Nick's companions were quickly assessed and treated. During their first hour there, a Nurse Joy approached Nick.

"Nick? We have a phone call for you from Professor Oak in Pallet Town."

Nick smiled and stood, chuckling to himself.

"I wondered how long it would take him to try and get in contact with me. You guys and girls want to come?"

All of his companions nodded and stood up, following Nick to the phone Nurse Joy indicated. Nick picked up the receiver and smiled as the image of a very excited Professor Oak appeared.

"Greetings, Nick! I haven't talked to you in almost a year!"

Nick smiled.

"Yeah it's been a while Professor. I know you aren't much of one for small talk, so shall we cut to the chase? What do you want to know about Kyu... Besides everything there is to know?"

Professor Oak smiled.

"Well then, I'm sure you knew this already, but Kyu's evolution is the first Ninetails evolution in recorded history. This means that you as the theoretical trainer of Kyu have the right to name this evolutionary form."

Nick smirked and looked at Kyu next to him who was looking silently at Professor Oak, her nine flaming tails waving in the air. Kyu looked back at Nick and shrugged.

"We can only make suggestions until we hit one."

Nick nodded and stroked his chin in deep thought before looking back at Kyu and then Professor Oak.

"I know this is going to sound really arrogant, but what about Kyuubi?"

Kyu couldn't help but smirk at the suggestion of using the Japanese word her name was derived from. However, Kyuubi also meant Nine Tails. Kyu nodded.

"That seems suitable."

Professor Oak nodded and punched in several keys into a panel.

"Very well then, Pokemon number three hundred and eighty eight will now be known as Kyuubi in the Pokedex. I'm going to send out a temporary update to everyone's Pokedex to let them know that a new one has been added and more information is pending."

Nick nodded and smiled as he heard every single Pokedex in the room go off with the new update sound. Nick personally didn't like the things and left his at his apartment. He smirked as everyone flipped theirs open and checked out Kyu's non existent profile. Nick looked back at Professor Oak.

"When I get the time, I'll come down and pay you a visit."

Professor Oak nodded gratefully.

"I would appreciate it. Until then Nick, I look forward to watching the rest of your matches. Oh, and say hello to Ash for me will you? He hasn't called in a while..."

Nick nodded.

"Will do Professor. Take care. Oh and by the way, try and get some sleep ok? You look like you've had a severe case of insomnia. Trust me; your research isn't going to vanish overnight if you get some shuteye."

Professor Oak chuckled.

"What can I say? I'm a slave to my own work. Well, I'll try. Take care of yourself Nick."

"You too, Professor. Later."

Nick put the receiver down and smiled as he turned to Kyu.

"Kyu, I've been wondering, if I was to touch your mane, chest ruff or tail tips, would I be burnt? Or do they share similar properties to a Ponyta or a Rapidash?"

Kyu smiled.

"Only one way to find out."

Nick shrugged and placed a hand in the very centre of her chest ruff, carefully avoiding placing his hand in any particular spot that might arouse suspicion in the others present. Nick shivered as his hand came in contact with it and he blinked in confusion.

"Wow, it's set to exactly my body temperature... I can't feel it..."

Kyu smiled again and placed her paw over Nick's hand, making her nod slowly.

"I can feel it, however, it's cold... That may be due to my internal body temperature being much higher than yours..."

Nick nodded and slowly pulled his hand back. Things were definitely getting interesting...

Nick's companions were out of the Pokemon centre by nightfall, however, the reporters were waiting for them to come out. Nick sighed.

"I'll give them an F triple minus for persistence..."

All of Nick's companions shared a slight chuckle at the indirect way of hoping they would leave them alone but decided to deal with the problem now rather than later. The reporters rushed Nick and began talking as quickly as they could before they realised Nick was smiling at them. Once they stopped he chuckled.

"If your words were pavement, at the rate you were talking, I could have made a road from here to Palette Town. Did you not learn anything I said last time?"

The reporters seemed unsure who should start lest they all do it again so Nick looked at one particular female near the front.

"Alright then, why don't you start?"

The woman with her cameraman right behind her spoke.

"Nick, many people saw your match today and are wondering what was that stone you used on Kyu to make her evolve?"

Nick closed his eyes and smiled.

"Sorry, but I promised the man who told me where to get them that it would remain a secret, and for good reasons as well. Those stones are very unpredictable. That thing I said about the universe imploding? Although it's not exactly plausible, it's still a possibility. That's the reason their place of origin will remain a secret. What about you?"

Nick looked at a male in the second row.

"Nick, many of our listeners want to know why you decided to take a different route to normal trainers and not capture the Pokemon with you."

Nick thought of a short way of answering but shook his head.

"That will take far too long to explain here. If we win in the finals, I will explain it in the interview there. If not, I will answer it after we have recovered from the loss."

The man nodded and Nick took several more questions before the topic changed to Kyu's evolution.

"Nick, what do you know about Kyu's new evolutionary form?"

Nick looked at the woman blankly for a moment before answering.

"Firstly, Kyu is perfectly capable to answer herself. That and apart from the fact that her mane, chest ruff and tail tips are set to exactly human temperature at least for me, I know as much as you do. In other words; not a whole lot."

The woman nodded, slightly embarrassed at having misdirected the question. Nick shrugged and looked around.

"Are there any other questions that haven't been asked before?"

Apparently, one hadn't, and a male in the very back row called it out.

"Have you ever had sex with any of your Pokemon?"

That caught more than one person's attention as many reporters turned to the one who asked the question. Nick just stared at the man and smiled, preparing to make an ass of this guy. He recognised the radio station he worked for and gave himself a high five mentally.

"Have I mated with any of my companions? If you can answer me this with any form of a decent answer, I'll answer your question; why exactly does it matter to you, or anyone else for that matter what I do or do not do in private behind closed doors?"

The man was at a loss and Nick could tell from the ever looming look of defeat in his eyes. Nick smirked.

"There isn't a reason is there? What I do 'on stage' so to speak stays there. What I do off stage stays there, like any true professional. You're reporting on my battles, not my love life, if there is any. Anyway, does anyone else have any questions?"

No one answered Nick so he smiled warmly.

"Alright then, have a nice evening everyone."

The reporters nodded and stepped aside for Nick and his companions as they walked through the group, smiling warmly at the man he chewed out glaring witheringly at him and they continued down the street to their temporary home.

At Nick's Home:

As soon as Nick had let his companions in, he closed the door and all of them smiled, not sure whether to laugh or cheer at their first major victory in proving the point that they had all come here for. Despite the happy mood, Nick checked all of the windows to make sure no one was spying before giving Kyu a passionate kiss in front of everyone, making both of them more than a little flushed as Shadow gave a soft howl while Kure whistled slightly. Nick turned around and smiled at Kure.

Kure just rolled her eyes and curled up on the couch as Nick led Kyu by the hand to their room and once they shut the door and Nick's hands immediately encircled around Kyu's waist, looking down at her new form. If anything, this form aroused him even more than her Ninetails form. It had some semblance of humanity while still holding much of its animalistic charm. Nick looked back up at her face and smiled lovingly at her.
