Chapter 2
Bryce woke up to the sound of chirping birds outside. He sat up and opened the window. There wasn't a cloud in the sky. Odd, considering yesterday's weather report. Though by the breeze coming through the window, it was going to be chilly today. Bryce put on a different pair of jeans, and tossed the ones that he was wearing in the trash can.
He put on a Mauville University T-shirt, and went into the living room to open the windows. He walked out onto the porch, and looked out into the dense forest. Occasionally he'd pack a hiking bag and camp out in the woods. Then suddenly he remembered something: this was the day he got his badge.
Bryce walked back inside, and found Absol staring out of the window.
[Something's not right,] she said. Her eyes were fixed on something out in the distance.
"What do you mean?" Bryce asked.
[Don't you think it's odd? The huge storms we had yesterday. Then we wake up only to find not a cloud in the sky? Doesn't that seem weird?]
"Well yes, but it's just good weather. It doesn't mean anything's wrong," Bryce replied.
Absol shook her head. [I still don't like it. I can sense changes in the weather, and something about this change just feels...wrong.]
Bryce kneeled next to her. "I trust what you say, but I don't necessarily think it's a problem." He hugged her neck before starting breakfast. He went over to the kitchen, and pulled out a box of pancake batter. Bryce poured it into a bowl with milk and water and mixed it. Absol continued staring out of the large window, the scythe on her head occasionally twitching. Bryce poured the batter onto a frying pan, and switched on the television.
The signal was jammed. There was nothing but static on each channel. Bryce flipped the pancake in the pan. He switched on his Xbox 360, but when the title screen for Call of Duty 2 appeared, the green light around the power button started flashing, and the screen started to lose its appearance, until eventually the system shut off.
Bryce sighed and shut the TV off. He removed the pancake from the pan and slid it onto a plate. He doused it in syrup, and sat down at the table. He slowly began to eat, when his cell phone rang. It was Nate.
"DUDE! GET OVER HERE NOW!" he shouted, nearly knocking Bryce out of his chair.
"Ugh...why?" he asked.
"JUST GET OVER HERE!" He sounded panicked. Probably got his Espeon hallucinating again. Bryce finished eating, and slipped on his fleece jacket and picked up his keys.
"Come on Absol, Nate wants us at his house," he said.
[Do you really think that's a good idea?] She asked, but nevertheless, she walked over to him, and Bryce put her inside of her Pokeball.
He mounted the WindBlaze, revved the engine and took off in the direction of Nate's house. He had a bad feeling about whatever happened. Could his Espeon be sick? Nah, she seemed perfectly healthy a couple days ago. Maybe Absol was right; maybe this wasn't any normal good weather.
Bryce arrived at Nate's house and shut the engine off. He released Absol, and knocked on the door.
[Bryce, I really don't like this,] she said, her scythe becoming sharp. Bryce prepared himself for anything. He knocked again, and the door flew open.
"Bryce, you have to help!" Nate said, seizing the front of his shirt. His eyes were bloodshot, and his hair was a mess.
"What's up Nate?" Bryce asked. Nate hauled him inside the messy house. There were dishes in the sink that didn't look like they had seen a dishrag in a while, clothes all over the floor, and...what is that in the corner?
"Something's wrong with Espeon. She won't wake up!" Nate threw Bryce to the floor, panicked. Espeon lay on her side in her bed, eyes closed. He snapped his fingers, but got no response. He checked a pulse. Steady and strong; she was fine.
"There's no problem, Nate. She's probably asleep," he said, standing up.
"But she's not! She usually wakes me up in the morning! I woke up this morning to find her passed out on the floor! What should I do?" like before, Nate grabbed Bryce's shirt. He was really freaked out.
"I'd suggest you clean your home. I see a ton of things that could've made her sick. Like that old fermenting thing, for instance," he said, pointing to the corner.
"That's a sock," Nate replied, still focusing on Espeon.
"Uh...take her to a Pokemon center?"
"I did already! They gave her back saying she was fine! Just like that!"
Bryce opened his mouth to say something, but heard a thump behind him. Bryce spun around, and saw Absol laying on her side. He quickly dashed over to her, and ran his hand along her side. She was breathing normally.
Bryce checked her pulse. Like Espeon, she was fine. Bryce shut her eyes, and called her into her Pokeball. Nate was still kneeling over Espeon.
"I wouldn't worry about it. She seems to be in good health, although maybe in some kind of psychic trance or unconscious. Keep an eye on her, though." With that, Bryce turned and left. He wasn't completely sure whether Absol would be fine or not.
Bryce parked his bike and went inside. He released Absol and carried her to his bed. He laid her down and pulled the blanket over her. He checked the clock on the dresser. 7:00. Half an hour until he had to be at the Precinct.
Bryce absently stroked the fur on Absol's head as he silently prayed for her recovery. He couldn't figure out what was wrong. Her breathing was fine, as was her pulse. Is it some kind of self-inflicted trance? Whatever it was, Bryce hoped she recovered.
He kissed her forehead as he stood up to change. He slipped on a blue dress-shirt and a red tie. He put on a pair of black dress pants, and black shoes. He combed his blonde hair, and shaved quickly. Casting one last look at his unconscious lover, he shut the bedroom door and left the cabin.
Bryce arrived at the Precinct at 7:15, and shut off his bike's engine. He walked inside, and sat down with the other 15 graduating officers. Nate was there, looking as glum as Bryce felt.
"Man, I was really hoping for Espeon to be here," he said. Nate's eyes looked swollen. Had he been crying?
"Nate, you alright?" Bryce asked. Nate looked like he was trying to hold back tears.
"I'm just worried about her. We have a special bond, y'know?" Nate put his face in his hands. Bryce heard a couple silent sobs.
"Nate, she'll be fine. She wouldn't want to see your big day ruined because something happened. I'll bet she'll wake up tomorrow in perfect health."
"You can't tell me you're so calm about Absol either," Nate said.
Bryce winced. He WAS pretty worried about her. To be honest, he wasn't sure what would happen to them. The thought of losing Absol was unbearable.
The crowd started clapping as the Chief of Police stood before the podium to present his speech.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we're gathered here today," he began, but one of the officers shouted, "What're you? Performing a marriage?!" which caused the crowd to erupt in laughter, including Nate, who chuckled weakly.
The Chief wiped the grin off of his face and continued. "Today we have 15 men and women in this crowd that have passed the test to becoming a licensed Mauville Police Officer. Through the power or teamwork, commitment, and unity, these recruits will bring down crime in this city. These officers will be given their badges, and they will leave tonight, a licensed Mauville Police Officer."
He walked over to the table next to the podium, and called all of the graduates up alphabetically. Bryce was called next to last, and received his badge. He shook the Chief's hand, and went back to his seat. Nate looked somewhat cheered up. The rest of the ceremony was just the Chief going on about the Police program, listed their fundraisers, and announced when the next Police Academy was having their next training session.
However, the last announcement was the most important. "On Monday at noon, all recruits will report to the Precinct Garage to receive their cruiser assignments and equipment. Have a good weekend, and be safe."
With that, all the recruits and crowd left the building, and headed home.
Bryce parked his bike in the garage, and walked inside. The cabin was dark and cold. He sighed and plugged his cell phone into the wall and locked the door. Wanting to give Absol some time, Bryce took a pillow from the closet and lay down on the couch to sleep.
