A Palm In Need by yin

Fishing Above

The verdant understory of any forest is magnificent, but that of the Amazon is like none ever seen. It exists almost like another floor where the majority of plants dwell. This area is populated by dense epiphytes (pokemon mimics included) and very thick ages branches. There is a lack of predation on this part except for the occasional raptor and climbing snake so for the most part, it's quite busy. Often times, interspecies communities are created in these unique conditions. Of course, people looking in can see the beauty more so than those that live here. For them, there is nothing special about it.

An ambipom hung upside down; its superb twin tails keeping it steady underneath this old branch. Its brows were furled as if it was concentrating. Suddenly, it swung to another branch, taking along with it one of the very thin but strong twigs clean off a passing branch. In fact, all its acrobatic movements through the trees were done solely with its twin tails. Even for most ambipom, this was a feat, much less the other denizens who could not figure out why this monkey was swinging about this way. It swung past a taillow nest, snatching up one of the vines that held it in place, causing the fortunately empty dwelling to smash against many branches on its way to the dark floor of the forest. "Sorry," it shouted, but it kept on swinging in that haphazard way.

It swung by a Kecleon's hiding spot, spooking him out of hiding. "ÂIdiota! ÂMire donde usted va mono estúpido!" [Idiot! Watch where you are going, stupid monkey!]

Of course, the ambipom was moving too fast to catch what he said.

*No one can understand you when you speak like that, Saito. Tell me in plain pokespeak.*

The Kecleon looked back at its tree and noticed one of the fruits was missing. Its anger shut off its camouflage as it took to shaking its fist at the fleeing ambipom. "Nani! Par el robar de mis bayas!" [Nani! Stop stealing my berries!]

The ambipom got that, not really from hearing it but it was just routine. "Sorry, but it's not your tree!" *The nerve of that guy.*The fruit she held in her small paws were the best in this part of the village. Devoid of any parasitic plants and well fed by water and nutrients, the berries that grew here were an enigma to the locals. It was just too perfect to be eaten by most. Its sheen was only rivaled by the sun whose light it reflects. "Pom! With this fruit, I will have the ultimate lure!"

Nani crossed a distance of 500 yards before coming to a stop. On the branch right below here was a large water holding plant with a yellow body, a red routine and many green tendrils that extended from its base. "Found the bromeliad. Maybe I will finally find something brilliant to do with my time besides idling away," With the things she collected, she fashioned a crude fishing rod with the fruit serving as bait. "It's great to eat... but I could catch something much bigger. Like... actually real live big bugs! Or even fish!" Her eyes shimmered as she thought of the large meals she could start hauling in instead of having to deal with the greedy tree hogging chameleon. "Pom! I'm ready for this!"

Nani's little forearms gripped the makeshift rod as her tails wrapped around a limb of the tree. Slowly, she lowered the vine into the clear water. She looked hard at the water, her teeth gritted, her body quivering with anticipation of the first bite, her nappy wave of hair succumbing to gravity and dangling forward towards the plant. For an hour, she spent her time waiting for something to stick to her rod, replacing the seemingly worn away fruits one by one until she was nearly out. "This one had better work... and I'm sending it deeper than the others. " She flung it straight down as hard as she could.

Almost immediately, she felt that something had indeed bitten her lure. Quickly she began luring the rod back... but all the vine that was submerged in the water disappeared. She dropped down onto the branch and there, she saw her mistake. She ran and jumped back up her branch, just barely dodging a large power whip. She looked up into the face of a large victreebel with many a blemish around the rim of its mouth.

"Tu idiota de la selva. Porqué era usted que intentaba pescar fuera de mí con esa baya de todas las bayas?!?!" the victreebel looked quite angry. It swung at her with its large central vine. "What are you doing?!" she screeched just as the whip slammed through the branch they occupied. Luckily, she was closer to the trunk of the tree and held on as the victreebel in brash act fell. She wiped some of the sweat off her brow with her tail paw and swung away from the scene, its face burning with sheer embarrassment.

"At least no one knows of this misadventure except for..." Something made her turn around and all the pokemon she annoyed were right there; the taillow, the kecleon among them.

"Em... look, a predator?!" All of them looked in the direction she pointed, allowing her the chance to sprint away.

As soon as she got far away from the angry horde, she resumed hunting for fruit. "That was a dumb idea... " Slowly, she made her way to a nearby Nanab Tree where she spent her time eating and thinking. A lot of the impulsive things she does left her without anyone to hang around with at the end of the day.

"Pom... another day of hanging around this tree, not particularly one of the sweet ones either. " She threw one of the peels off the branch. It flopped in the air as it trying to spread wide but unable to overcome its glueyness. It landed on a branch with a lewd stickiness before succumbing to gravity and falling down further. She heard a splash and looked to see that her trash led her to a real bromeliad. "Lucky!"
