Chapter 1: Gwen
"John, wake up dear!" Mary yelled from downstairs as she hurriedly prepared breakfast for her son and daughter.
I woke with a bead of cold sweat rolling down my forehead. Last night I had gone to bed dreaming about starting my long awaited pokemon adventure, only to awake to the same nightmare that has been haunting me since I started thinking about becoming a pokemon trainer. The nightmare in which my life comes to an end, just like my dad's did: at the hands of a member of Team Galactic.
"Coming!" I yelled as I slowly raised my body up from my bed while slowly shaking off the remaining feelings of last night's nightmare. I consider myself to be just an average sixteen year old, just like any other teenager that lived in Twinleaf Town. I'm about 6 feet tall with wavy hazel brown hair and brown eyes. I'm not really muscular, but then again I am most definitely not fat. If I really had to take a side, I would probably classify myself as skinny, but if I had to, I could defend myself in a fight.
"Honey, you don't want to keep Professor Rowan waiting!" my mom yelled once more from downstairs.
"Its okay mom, I don't mind taking John's place while he catches up on his beauty sleep." my sister said loudly enough so that I could hear. Even though my sister was only fourteen, she is heralded as some sort of "genius" and graduated from the academy early enough to become a trainer; with mom's consent of course.
"Ha, funny Sarah." commented mom, while sitting down at the dinner table to have her coffee. But of course, my mother didn't really enjoy the idea of her only daughter off alone in the wilderness at such a tender age.
"See Sarah, even mom doesn't think your jokes are funny." I stated as my sister stuck her tongue out at me while my mom turned away to refill her coffee. I quickly made my way downstairs to have a short breakfast before running off to see Professor Rowan. I was thankful to finally leave the lonely town of Twinleaf. My family had moved here when my dad died. Of course I was only seven, but I still can remember dad taking me out to play in the snow back when we used to live in Snowpoint City.
I quickly finished and kissed my mom goodbye and gave my sister a hug before rushing out the door to the laboratory next-door. I quickly knocked on the door, only to be greeted mid-knock by one of Professor Rowan's assistants.
"Hello, you must be John Sinclai- wait, you mean John Sinclair, the son of famous Pokemon P.I. Ron Sinclair?!" nearly shouted the assistant as he looked up from his clipboard.
I cringed as I heard the name. Although I wasn't too fond of the fact that my father was well known in the Sinnoh region for the numerous acts of justice he carried out, I am rather proud that I had a dad that was so moral and charismatic. People have often told me that my dad inspired a lot of people to uphold the law and become lawman themselves.
"Yes, that is me" I told the assistant, who was lightly blushing from his sudden and improper outburst.
"Oh, yes um, come this way please." beckoned the aid as he led the way to the end of the laboratory where an old man in a lab coat stood looking over some work on his computer.
"So, you must be John. The last time I saw you where barely up to my knee." chuckled Rowan
"Well, that was a long time ago. As you can see, I have grown up since our last meeting." I said as I allowed grin to creep up on my face at the mentions of the old times, when my family was whole and happy.
"I see that your here for your starting pokemon as well as the standard pokedex." said Rowan as he handed me the pokedex. I looked at it in wonder knowing that now, I am a certified trainer.
"But, before you pick out your starting pokemon, I want to let you know that before your dad perished he asked me to give a pokemon that he recovered from a Galactic base during one of the raids he accompanied. He told me to tell you that the pokemon had just barely hatched and hasn't received any training whatsoever. He obviously thought that you could give it a better life than any other trainer could, so here." Rowan said as he handed the ordinary pokeball to me.
I sat there quietly thinking that this pokemon has been in its ball ever since it was captured, which could have been long over ten years ago! I noticed that Professor Rowan apparently had more to say, so I snapped the thoughts out of my head and decided to find out later.
"Even though you have been given a pokemon already, you still want a starter pokemon, right?"
"Oh, well yes thank you!" I replied, relived to know that I still get to pick the pokemon I had spent hours deciding to pick day before.
"So, will it be chimchar, or maybe a tur-"
"I would like to have a piplup please, um sir." I asked, only realizing now that I had cut off the professor in mid sentence.
Rowan seemed to frown slightly before breaking into a full smile.
"You know, you're dad was the same way when he picked his starting pokemon too. I was an assistant back then, but I can still remember the goofy face he had on after he noticed that he had just interrupted the professor. Kinda looked like the one you have on right now." the professor commented while I silently thanked the gods that he was taking this all in stride. Rowan then handed me a pokeball that contained my piplup and wished me luck.
'This is it' I thought thanking Rowan and steeping outside 'the adventure that I have dreamed about for the past two years is finally beginning!' I thought happily as I finally made my way out of the town and into the grasslands that surround the town and the nearby lake. Even the sun was still hanging high in the sky, signaling to me that I had all the time in the world to get to Sandgem town.
"Return Holland." I called out as my newly named piplup effortlessly dispatched another wild starly.
"Great job today buddy!" I called out to my pokemon as he was sucked back into his pokeball figured at this rate I could get my first gym badge in a week or so. I noticed that the amount of sunlight was starting to wind down as the sun crept closer to the ground; signaling that the day would be ending soon. As the sun began to set I sat down on a nearby grassy slope where I decided that it was going to be such a pleasant night that I wouldn't bother to set up camp. As the stars started to come out, I suddenly remembered the other pokemon my dad left me to take care of. After a quick feel around my belt I held the unknown pokemon in my hand.
'Well, now or never' I decided as I tossed the pokeball on the grassy patch that I was currently resting on. My eyes were blinded as a wave of pure light released from the pokeball and quickly reformed into the shape of a small human child.
'Great, what is this? I don't think I have ever seen a pokemon like this before.' I thought as the glare from the pokeball started to ware off. 'Wait, what if this pokemon turns out to be a riolu? It could even be some other kind of crazy rare pokem-'
'Um, hello?' asked a young female voice. The words seemed to resonate in my head, ruining my attempts at trying to guess what direction the voice came from.
'What? Where is that voice coming from?' I thought, somewhat irritated at the thought that someone was trying to play a trick on me. But it was then that I remembered the pokemon I released mere seconds before.
'Behind you maybe?' queried the young voice again.
Lightly perturbed at the fact the something actually read my thoughts; I slowly angled my body so that I would be facing my unknown companion. As I turned around I noticed a pair of pale pink eyes that seemed to perfectly match its unique body coloration. I couldn't help but gaze at the uncommon meditite that sat silently before me. It was widely known that some pokemon were oddly colored and are considered to be highly valuable by breeders and trainers alike. To think that I possess such a priceless pokemon made me grin from ear to ear with joy.
'So.....is it normal for you to ignore people when they talk to you?' asked my new meditite in an agitated tone.
"Sorry, I um, I got lost in my thoughts. I noticed you can read my thoughts though." I said, still kinda freaked out by the whole mind reading ability.
'I can't really read your mind.' She said simply. 'Its more like I can pick up the thoughts you think out loud. Because when you think, the intensity of the thoughts determines my ability to clearly hear what you're thinking. So if you were to purposely focus on broadcasting your thoughts, then I could easily pick them up. But, when you are scared or nervous, it becomes harder to control the strength of your thoughts, and I will most likely hear whatever crosses your mind.'
"Oh, well okay then"
'Great, now I just have to focus on controlling my thoughts.' I said to myself as I quickly realized something I meant to ask her sooner.
'So then, do you have a name or something?"
'Well, not really. Pokemon don't usually name their offspring because they can either identify their young by their scent or psychic imprint.' she answered.
"Oh. So then is it okay if I name you then?" I asked, hoping she wouldn't be too offended.
'Since you are my trainer, I suppose it would be okay. But, please pick a name the sounds somewhat good, okay?' she asked in a nervous voice.
"Don't worry" I said in the best soothing voice I could muster. "I promise it will be beautiful."
Meditite blushed slightly as I likewise did after saying the words over in my head.
'I gotta watch what I say' I thought. 'She is cute though, and I bet she has been through her share of rough times in the past. She deserves something nice.'
I thought for a second, reviewing numerous names that I had heard over the years on television or in books I had read. I was about to take a break when I thought of family names on my mom's side. 'Huh, can't believe I overlooked that' I mused as I continued my quest for the perfect name.
Finally, after twenty minutes of hard brain work and the occasional 'Are you almost done?' from my pink meditite, I came up with just the right name for her.
"Gwen." I stated simply as I watched her face suddenly light up with happiness as she immediately grew found of her new identity.
"It was my aunt's name from my mom's side. She passed away when she was only 32 years old. The doctors say she had some kind of leukemia and she was diagnosed with only two months to live. But, my mom tells me that my aunt always possessed a free spirit and a certain spunk that never died down, even when she was on her deathbed. And that's exactly how I think of you Gwen. A little ball of trouble that sticks up for herself and lives life to the fullest! You never give up and will by far one of the most independent, yet caring person that a lot of people will ever meet. That's how my aunt was, and I can tell by that look in your eyes when I first saw you that that's how you will turn out to be. I just know that you will do my aunt proud Gwen, I know it." I finished with a glimmer in my eyes at the thought of my favorite relative living on in this cute, spunky new pokemon.
'It's almost scary how closely she mirrors you Aunt Gwen. I know that she will do both of us proud, I'm sure if it.' I thought as I looked over at Gwen's face, only to find her pearl pink eyes shimmering like mine.
'Thank you. I know that I will live up to your aunt's name just fine. You know, I never got your name.' Gwen asked solemnly
"It's John. John Sinclair." I responded, feeling slightly dumb for not giving her my name earlier.
'I just wanted to thank you John. This is probably the most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for me! I just know your going to be a great trainer!' Gwen fished as she looked up sincerely into my eyes.
"You know what Gwen, I know that not only are you going to be a strong pokemon, I know that we are going to be a great team!" I said hugging her small body as we sat on the grassy field half way between Sandgem and Twinleaf. Even though I don't know for certain what lay ahead, I'm positive that whatever does happen, good or bad, I'll always have Gwen at my side.Chapter End Notes:Whew.. first chapter done.
