Dustin awoke on a hospital bed, strapped down. It was morning. He looked around and saw his family with him in the room. They were all sleeping. He tried to get out of bed, but to no avail. Just then, a Nurse Joy came into the room.
"You're up. Finally." She went over to the others and roused them. As she did, two more people entered the Pokemon Center room. Brandon and Megan. Dustin's parents.
"Oh, Dustin!" Megan ran up to him and squeezed him as much as she dare.
"Mom, can't breathe here!"
She let go of him. "Can he be released from those restraints?"
"It depends." Nurse Joy looked at Dustin. "Can you promise me that you're not going to attack everyone here?"
"Mm-hmm." He said, confused. He sat very still, waiting for her to unstrap him.
Nurse Joy was hesitant at first, but then removed the metal clamps that held down the restraints. Instantly, Dustin could move again. He got up and stretched his arms. He went over to Luna to see if she was okay. Luna looked frightened at the sight of him she clutched her mother's chest.
"Just get away from us." Sylvia said.
Dustin was hurt. He was even hated by his own lover. "Why? What did I do?"
Luna turned around and Dustin saw a burn mark on her back, identical to the one he left on Raticate when he used Aura Burn on it. "No." He took a step back.
"Dustin, we need to talk." Brandon tried to tell him.
"Stay away from me!" He ran out of the Pokemon Center. Nurse Joy went to seal the doors to not let him out.
"I wouldn't do that. He'd only get angry. Let him out." Brandon said.
Nurse Joy put down the key, and just sat on the bed. "What exactly happened?"
Sylvia decided to explain it.
(Flashback)
William adjusted himself and used his vines to steady his landing and to spring himself off. He was already preparing for his next attack. A seed shot from William's back, and Dustin was forced to duck out of the way. As he did, though, he heard a scream. He turned around and saw Luna with the seed on her body. The vines were slowly spreading across her body.
"Luna!" Dustin rushed to her side and tried to slash the vines off, but they grew too fast. He finally went for the seed. When it was pulled, the vines stopped growing and sapping. Luna was devastated. She looked as if she was gonna die of shock. Dustin turned around to William. "Why? Why did you hurt my daughter?"
'It was an accident, man! Bugger off!'
"No, you bugger off!" He shot an Aura Sphere at William. It hit him, and he flew back and hit a tree. As William hit, a resounding crack filled the encampment. At this, Dustin let out a fierce howl. The moon was showing fully. It was a full moon.
Dustin started to clench his fists, then they became more elongated. His five fingers became three, and fur was growing in patches. Claws were growing out of his fingers, and his teeth were becoming more sharp, as his mouth was becoming more snoutlike. By this time, the fur was at full bloom, and he no longer resembled a human at all. He was a Lucario. And a fierce one at that. He rushed at William and went for an Aura Burn. He struck, only to have it blocked by Luna. Her back was being used as a shield to make sure he didn't kill William. Dustin grabbed Luna and threw her across the clearing. She fell and skid on the ground. Sylvia went up to him and used Force Palm on him and knocked him unconscious. They all dragged Dustin to Pewter City, where the Pokemon Center kept him under watch for the time being. They all waited for morning to come, and fell asleep before they knew what happened.
(End of Flashback)
"Oh my god! That's horrible! To do that, and to a child, no less! He needs to be locked up!" Nurse Joy had seen and heard of a few cases, but none as barbaric as this.
"No. What he needs is to learn to control it. Once he accomplishes that, he will be the best father ever." Brandon stared at the door Dustin had exited. "I just hope he controls it before someone is seriously hurt."
Dustin ran through the clearing, through the forest, back to the place they had camped. He found the exact place where he had slept with that dream.
'Please. I don't want this! I want to be normal!' He shouted in his head, hoping that the inner Lucario would hear him.
He sat there for hours, and nothing. He decided that the family he hurt wouldn't want someone like him as a father figure. He found a little cubby under a tree and crawled inside it. He then slept away his troubles, hoping to start a new life somewhere else tomorrow.
As he slept, a thought rose in his head. A thought of the full dream that he had last night. The inner Lucario had said that he would lose to him. Dustin was a competitor at heart. "No. I won't lose. YOu hear me, Inner Lucario? I won't lose to you!" He shouted into the air. Then, he slumped down, and started sobbing. "What's the use? I'd rather I lose than me be me right now. My family hates me, my daughter is scared to even look at me, I've got no one now."
"That's not entirely true."
Dustin turned around. It was his father. "Dad, please. You don't know what will happen!"
"And neither do you." Brandon said calmly. "I know more than you think."
Dustin started for a minute. "What do you mean?" He asked.
"This is gonna take a while. I already told the story to Sylvia earlier. Now you need to hear it."
Dustin sniffed once. "Okay." He sat down.
"Now, when you were very little, you were bitten by a Lucario. We were able to kill it, but not long after, we found out that it carried a very unique bacteria strain. It sent the bacteria to you through the bite. It's kinda like rabies, but you won't be killed by it. Back then, scientists didn't know what to call it. It was about 8 years ago. Now, they have a name for it. Dustario Syndrome. They got it named after you and a Lucario. It basically means that you are initially part Lucario. It may sound cool, but Lucario have very dominating traits. They also can tell what they need to do in an important situation."
Dustin remembered the voice he always heard in the back of his head, telling him what to do next. He realized that it was the Lucario in him. "So, is there a way to cure it?"
"No. Only you have the power to cure it. I heard you yelling in teh air. You were trying to talk to your inner Lucario, right?"
"Y-yeah."
"Well, I heard you say that you would not lose to him. Make that statement true. Don't lose to it. You have to fight for your place. In the end, it will be either you, or the Lucario."
Dustin contemplated for a minute. "Wait. I have a full month til the next full moon. That is what triggers it, right?"
"Yes. Luckily, you are right. That beast won't rear it's ugly head til next month. Til then, you're safe. And I know that Sylvia will want to help you, right, Sylvia?" He called out.
Sylvia walked out. She was looking at Dustin. Dustin felt her gaze, and immediately shrank. He didn't want to hurt anyone. He had already hurt the daughter that meant so much to him. He didn't want to hurt anyone anymore. "You probably want to leave me, and take Luna." Suatin said, very sullen.
'Hmm, that was what I was thinking at first, but now, I think we need to help you.'
'All of ussss.'
All of Dustin's family walked out of the bushes, including Luna. She still looked fearful.
'Luna, honey, I know you will never forgive me, but I want you to know. No matter what, I will always love you.' He said this, and a tear fell from his eyes.
Luna noticed it, and went up to her father and hugged him. 'I know. I'm sorry, daddy. I should have been there for you.' It had been only a few months, but she already sounded more grownup than normal. 'I promise. I'm gonna help you, with mommy, and we're gonna get you back to normal.'
Dustin hugged her back. "Thanks, kiddo." He kissed her cheek.
Luna backed off. As she backed off, she fel to the ground, screaming in pain. 'Ahh! It hurts!'
Dustin went up to her, and saw the Aura Burn taking it's toll. He focused his Aura and applied it to her burn. Immediately, it began to recede, and Luna's cries were getting quieter. Altogether, she began to stop crying out. The burn on her back had disappeared.
Dustin sighed and said "There. Good as new." And as he said this, he dropped down to the ground. He had passed out.
(Dream state)
Dustin found himself in the familiar black space that was his mind. "Did you hear me back there? I won't lose to you!"
"Everything comes to an end. You will meet your end soon enough, and I will have full control of you! I won't lose. You will fail, and I will win. It is how it works! I am a Lucario. You are nothing but a useless child! You will lose."
Dustin shouted at it. "YOU WON'T WIN! I'LL WIN FOR MY FAMILY! I'LL BEAT YOU!" He jumped at the Lucario and swung with all his might. The Lucario disappeared, saying "There. Now I know I won't lose. Keep fighting, and we'll see who is the winner."
(End Dream State)
Dustin awoke in the Pokemon Center. He was on a bed again. This time, though, he wasn't restrained. "Ugh. How long was I out?"
"Almost a day! I was beginning to think I wasn't gonna be able to battle you!"
This was a new voice altogether. He turned around and saw a dark skinned male. His eyes were so close together, it looked as if they were closed.
"Who are you?"
"Well, I'm the leader of the Pewter Gym! I'm Mark. I'm Brock's oldest sibling. While he's out, I'm the acting Gym Leader. So, I heard you're looking for a battle with me!"
Dustin got out of bed very quickly. "Yeah! Give me a few minutes to gt myself ready!"
Dustin ran out of the hospital room, and the Nurse Joy there screamed. Just then, a couple of Chanseys came and held out Dustin's clothes. Dustin looked down and saw that his clothes had been removed and a gown was put on him. The gown would not cover him fully, as he ran, and the wind blew it upwards.
"Well, it seems that you have a time and a place for everything!" Sylvia had just arrived and saw Dustin in his prime.
Dustin immediately covered himself up, more for the Nurse's sake than Sylvia's. He then grabbed his clothes with his Aura, and brought them into the room again. "Uhh, Mark? Can you get out for a minute while I get changed?"
Mark just laughed. "Okay. I'll get out." He left the room, laughing.
Dustin quickly got changed, and grabbed his things. He left the hospital room to find his entire family waiting for him. "Okay, everyone! Next stop, Pewter Gym!" He led the way to Pewter Gym. He was gonna get his first badge.
