Chapter 1 - Project Emergence
Chapter 1 - Project Emergence
Blank, white walls crowded on me as I walked down the hallway. No windows allowed light in as we were 50 meters below ground and the flickering lights cast eerie shadows on the walls. I sighed gloomily, we'd been stuck in this outpost which was little more than a few rooms connected by one hallway, for several weeks and any hopes of reinforcements coming soon were nil.
Opening the door at the far end of the hallway I entered and saluted briefly at the stocky man standing behind a desk. "General, the number of people seeing these apparitions has reached a dozen, the last person being Lieutenant Somerfield who reported seeing the flickering shape of a man walking down the corridor."
"That's over half the garrison Mitchell. Have you checked the water supply and the air vents? Is it possible someone's poisoned our food with hallucinogenic?"
I shuffled my feet glancing nervously from side to side, "Sir... with respect I have a feeling these apparitions might not be so fake as we first thought." The General glanced at me as I continued, "All the people with the exception of the weird monsters that were reported were wearing identical clothing, white with a red R on them. I don't think there is any hallucinogenic that can cause so many people to see so similar visions."
Instead of replying the General just stared, puzzled I turned around to see that the door was fading away. The walls around the corridor and us were blurring and gaps appeared in the walls where a metallic grill would pop into place. Those not sleeping were standing in the corridor staring wild eyes as the place transformed before our eyes. The walls shifted once more then settled down taking a dull, grey appearance.
A sudden hissing noise and several of the men started coughing, and falling over unconscious. "Knock out gas" coughed the general before falling over. Holding my breath I made my way other the piles of bodies in the corridor, trying to make it to the exit lift. My vision blurred and I fell over coughing, holding on long enough to see a man walk up to me, his clothes were white with a red R printed on the shirt. "Now what do we have here" he chuckled as I lapsed into sleep.
I suppose it's a decent enough time to introduce myself now. My name is Corporal Sam Mitchell, I was born in the UK and led a simple enough life, joining the Royal Marines when 19 and spent the next 3 years training. 2 years my squad and several others were forced to retreat under fire into this bunker and hold out for reinforcement. Though it seems its too late for any help now.
Groaning I sat up, blinking dust out of my eyes. Looking round I saw I was in a jail, a faint light illuminated the bars but apart from that the whole cell was in darkness. My arms felt like dead weights and as I moved them forward they stuck, held fast by chains.
"I wouldn't waste your strength on trying to escape if I were you," came a voice from the other side of the cell. Looking I couldn't see anything except two eyes, reflecting the little amount of light. The gaze wasn't human, the eyes being larger and sharper, also the iris was a deep red.
"W-Who are you, What are you?" I stammered, not even having the energy to try to stand up.
If I could have seen his face I would have sworn he was smiling, "Heh, my names Jakkaru. As to what I am, I'm a Lucario."
"Lucario?" I queried.
"Yes, Lucario, Pokemon, Fight and Steal type. Don't you know anything?"
"I know that I've never heard anything about Pokemon or Lucario."
"Really? Now how did they find you I wonder" Muttered Jakkaru, "Well, in any case its best you get some sleep. I overheard the guard saying that this will be our last night before our lives are changed forever."
How long I slept I don't know. Time seemed to slow down and skip as I was shot with tranquilliser when they opened the cell. Once again the men and women with the red R were there. I woke up on an operations table, my sight blurred, I turned to my side and saw a black and blue jackal like creature before someone put a mask over my face and I faded into the blackness once again.
Once again I barely woke up and found that all feeling in my legs and body had gone. People wearing operating gloves and masks were all grinning down on me, it was like something out of a poorly made horror flick.
"Back to sleep with you, don't want to spoil the surprise for you," chuckled one of the doctors nastily, twisting a valve on a gas canister beside my head and again I blacked out.
"Heart rates steady, breathing is normal, brain activity is normal. I think we may have succeeded Butch."
"So where did the human come from anyway? We've been having a hard time finding specimens that are compatible."
"Yes, the humans blood type is unique and is incredibly rare, the only other person we know with the blood type was part of Project Emergence and he was too old to even risk the combination... What's strange is that this human and others were caught in the Sector E2 corridor which lies adjacent to the project which had been put on hold until they can figure out how they bypassed our security to get into the corridor. Luckily the sleeping agent was released into the vents when the cameras picked them up."
"Yes, I am familiar with Emergence, something about dimensions and trying to find Palkia."
"Yes, something along those lines. This... specimen was the only one with the right blood type, the others were taken to several of our other complexes in Sinnoh for holding until we can question them."
I lay there listening as they continued to talk about how someone could possibly get past their security. I had been awake for some time now but had kept my eyes closed so they wouldn't feel the need to tranquillise me again.
"Boss, we've lost contact with patrol Delta and Charlie, and the powers being cut to the building."
"Nurse, subdue the patient and make sure he cant escape, then make yourself scarce with the recorded data. I'll set up a few distractions for them then set the evac procedure in order."
"Yes, Sir."
Footsteps faded into the distance and I heard the Nurse move up beside me. Risking it I lashed out with my hand where I guessed she stood. Feeling a solid thump then a woman groaning I opened my eyes. My sight had sharpened at the corners and everything had a slight blue haze that was barely noticeable. Looking at my hand I stared, instead of a hand there was a furry black paw with a metal spike on it. There was a needle sticking out of my blue arm and I could feel the drug coursing through my veins.
"Not again" I moaned as I fell over unconscious for the umpteenth time in two days.
