Chapter 2 - Odai

Chapter 2 - Odai

"Lucario, are you awake?"
Rubbing my eyes I looked up at the women speaking to me. I was sitting against a tree on the fringe of a forest near a road. A policewoman was looking down at me kindly.

"I don't know what Team Rocket did to you or had planned for you but we raided the warehouse where you were held at last night and found you lying there with the needle in your arm. I'm guessing you must have been pretty tired as we haven't heard a peep from you until now."
"You're an incredibly high level Lucario so even though I'm releasing you back into the wild you might want to look for a trainer, it might help you recover from the experience of being experimented on by Team Rocket."
With that she walked back to a motorbike on the road and sped of, disappearing round a bend out of sight.

"Well this is awkward isn't it?"
"Who said that?" I spun around using the tree as a support, trying to see who was talking.
"You can't see me because technically I'm You, or at least somehow our minds are one."
"Then maybe you can explain what they did to me," I said looking at my body, it had completely changed, thinking back I remembered that jackal creature and realised somehow I had become him.
"Good thinking, that might also explain why I can also read your thoughts and memories, I should have expected this from Team Rocket. Its not often they stick a Human and Pokemon together, maybe because all the test subjects have died and it's illegal."
"Hmm, are you Jakkaru by any chance? And what did that women mean about a Trainer, I left school years ago."
"Yes, Team Rocket somehow merged our bodies into one, and I suppose I should ask a question too. How do you not know about Pokemon and Trainers when it's the first thing you learn about here."

"Well if you can read my memories look and learn mate."
It felt weird, pieces of ancient memories from my childhood flashed up then disappeared again to be replaced by another memory. Soon the images blurred into one and I had to sit down and cradle my head as my mind struggled to cope with the speed. As suddenly as it had started it stopped.

"I'm sorry about that... I didn't know. It must be difficult for you. No home, no family, all gone and no way back."
"Well, my dad left me with a bit of advice I'm gonna follow now, 'if you're lost, don't look back at the past but look forwards into the future' because what's in the past is that, the past. And I have a feeling I need to know about Pokemon and Trainers if I don't want to look out of place. In any case I'm not the only from my world, I still have a few friends out there, and I'm going to get them back."

With that I picked myself up and started walking clumsily into the depths of the forest. I noticed that my sense of balance was much more acute and that I felt much stronger than before. Again the faint outline of blue surrounded everything and I could sense and make out objects behind me even thought I couldn't see them.

"Well now, where to start off. Basics I suppose. As Humans are animals so are Pokemon, except they cover a much wider area of species, There's several evolutions of most species of Pokemon but that requires becoming stringer or finding a stone, or even something as simple as the time of day.
"
"This is one of the reasons why Pokemon partner up with humans who become their Trainers, the trainers look after them, feed them and battle against other Trainers. This means most Trainers become good friends with their Pokemon. There are tournaments in which Trainers compete to find who's the best out them all."

"The Trainers help their Pokemon learn moves or attacks which they can use to attack or defend themselves with against other Pokemon."
"You think I could use any of these moves?" I asked.
"I doubt it, you've got the level but you don't have any experience at all of battling, so I advice staying out of fights until you understand how to."

"Simple enough." I stopped looking around me, trees stood tall around me, I'd been walking for 10 minutes now and hadn't seen a living soul. "How many Pokemon are there in the world?"
"Enough to mean this is a trap. I suppose I ought to have mentioned that some Pokemon species attack others for food?"
"Hmm, yes that might have been a good idea." I said sarcastically as red eyes appeared in the patches of darkness caused by the trees. Spinning round I saw that I was surrounded.

"Ideas?"
The Pokemon moved forward snarling, they looked like great, black and grey wolves.
"Mightyena... It might be an idea to start running any time now."
"Bit late for that now," I replied. But even as I tensed expecting them to leap at me several of the Mightyena stopped and started sniffing the air, turning their heads towards the same direction. One of the Mightyena barked at the others, "Change of plans, we're gonna dine tonight." and they ran of spreading out into the forest.

"Did they just change their menu?"
"Not good," The voice actually sounded worried, "firstly you can understand them because you're a Pokemon in case you're wondering. And secondly human is next on the menu from a Pokemon."
"Not good indeed... Well I have nothing to lose so I'll go do what I can. Hang on, didn't I manage to speak to you before in the cell?"
"Yes, but that was telekinesis, mind talking and anyway I might not be in control at the moment but its my body as much as yours, don't I have a say in the matter?"
"Yes, but your answer would have been to go help, yes?"
"Spose."

I ran through the forest after the Mightyena, I was much faster than before and I was able to duck and dodge most obstacles though a few branches managed to whip my face as I ran.

"I trust I can still punch and kick or is that considered a move?"
"Don't be a fool, of course you can. Moves are special abilities, Earthquake, Water Gun, Flame-thrower... that might be a problem actually. Another thing about Pokemon is we're certain types, like we're Fight and Steel, but that means were weak against fire Pokemon and Mightyena's know flame-thrower."
"Great, weak against fire, no difference there, so just duck and weave and I'll be fine then."
"Not likely... just don't kill if you can that is the first rule of battling"

I skidded to a stop by the edge of a tree line and looked onwards. Half a dozen Mightyena surrounded a kid who can't have been more than 15 years old in a clearing. Looking onwards I could see the only reason he hadn't been eaten yet was a small, orange lizard with a tail that ended in small flame was breathing small gusts of flame at them. But it was evident from the way the Mightyena were laughing that it wouldn't even singe them let alone hurt them.

"You ready?"
"No, but I realised since I can read your thoughts just think it and I'll hear."
I chuckled, 'I'll never understand you'

Then sprinted forward and leapt headfirst into the side of a Mightyena which had just leapt at the Pokemon. The Mightyena yelped in pain and flew into another of its pack, knocking it over.

I turned my attention on the lead Mightyena who seemed to be in charge, "You just want to be eaten don't you!" he snarled, leaping at me.
In one fluid movement I rolled backward kicking upward at the belly of the Mightyena and righted my self, landing in a crouch on the ground.

"Impressive, but aren't you showing off a bit?"
'Not really, actually I could have never done that as a human, this bodies flexibility is amazing.'
"Thank you, I trained rather hard before I was captured, but don't you think we should concentrate on the rest?"

Looking round I saw that the Mightyena were pelting off into the forest with the lead one looking a bit winded. As they reached the edge of the forest however they turned round and opened their jaws releasing several jets of flame at me. I barely had time to raise my arms to cover my face before they hit me and sent me flying backwards and I hit a tree with a sickening crunch and I fell forward unconscious, a single fleeting thought, "Déj vu anyone?"

I opened my eyes, I was standing in the middle of a reception area and the kid from before was holding a strange ball shaped device, which he swiftly clipped, to a belt under his jacket.

"Hi, my names Odai, I have to thank you for saving me and Charmander from those Mightyena, without you I hate to think what would have happened."
I nodded at him, then looked around, also noticing that strangely I didn't hurt a bit even though I remembered being blasted by fire and hitting a tree.

The kid cleared his throat and he seemed to have difficulty phasing words into a sentence, "Nurse Joy healed your wounds and mended your arm, which you broke when you hit the tree. But... that's not all... to get you here, I couldn't carry you, I'm not strong enough... so, I, uh. Had to use a poke ball on you to get you here. And I was wandering if... you would like to join me and Charmander?"

"Poke ball?" I asked Jakkaru
"A device which humans use to carry Pokemon around if they faint or when travelling, its not necessary to always travel in it, but more convenient. The kid raises a point though, if you do want to find your friends you need to become stronger and people will keep trying to capture you unless you already have a Trainer; in any case he likely knows Sinnoh better than you or I."

In answer I stuck out my paw. The kid seemed shocked at this and took a moment to respond but finally reached out and tentatively shook.
