Chapter 4 - A Trainers Path
As we walked I slowly showed Odai the events from the outpost leading to our capture and meeting him by sending the memories and images over the mental link.
"So you're a human then?"
"Yes... and no. I still have my memories, feelings and instincts from a human, but I share my mind and body with Jakkaru, we can read each others feelings, thoughts and memories and because of that we share a bond stronger than any friendship could be."
"So what happens when you find your friends, will you stay with them?"
I hesitated, following my friends had been the general idea but something told me to stick with Odai, the strange gut instinct you always follow.
"I'll follow you. Just act and behave like I'm a Pokemon and forget about me being part human; it wouldn't be useful for Team Rocket to know where we are and have angry mobs chasing us."
"You're right about that, there are a few religions about and they all despise human and Pokemon... bonding or close relationships, hearing that you're part human and Pokemon would likely have them rolling in their graves."
As we walked we occasionally heard the sounds of fighting and people yelling excitedly.
"Trainers fighting," explained Odai, "We'll likely have to face a few before dark."
Almost as if on cue a kid with a hat on backwards in an attempt to look cool jumped out of the bushes on the side of the road.
He pointed and Odai and yelled, "You, Trainer, I challenge you to a battle or do yourself a favour and admit defeat now!"
Odai grinned, "You're on, Charmander, up and at 'em."
In a flash of red light Charmander appeared, his tail flame blazing fiercely. The kid replied by sending out his own Pokemon, a small, bird called a Starly.
"Starly, use tackle!"
"Charmander, use ember!"
Charmander pulled back his head and past flames at the Starly flapping towards him. For the unfortunate Starly it couldn't turn quick enough and was sent spiralling back towards its trainer smelling of burnt feathers and barely conscious.
"Starly return," called the kid withdrawing the Starly into its pokeball in a flash of red light.
"You too Charmander," said Odai.
"I've still got two more Pokemon" said the kid as he pulled out another Pokeball, "Go, Bidoof!"
"You're up Lucario."
I stepped forwards, to face the Bidoof who didn't even reach my knee.
"Remember, injured but alive, killing is against the rules and will get you arrested so try and avoid that."
Once again the kid had Bidoof use tackle.
"Lucario, use quick attack!"
Bending my knees slightly I sprang forwards and covered the 15 meter gap between us in an instant and collided with the startled Bidoof. I barely felt the contact but the unconscious Bidoof certainly had.
"Geodude, you're my last hope." Called the kid, sending out a grapefruit sized bolder like Pokemon with arms entirely made of rock.
"Uh oh," said Odai,
"Uh oh indeed." Repeated Jakkaru.
"What's the problem?"
"Geodude is incredibly heavy and strong, he's also a rock type and its going to be Very painful if you get it by him."
As I was distracted the Geodude had used the time to cover the distance between us and tackled me; it felt like the sledgehammer in the gut. The force sent me back several paces.
"Geodude use rock throw!"
The Geodude started digging up rocks from the ground and throwing them at me with remarkable speed and strength. Dodging a massive boulder aimed for my head I charged forwards, ducking and weaving to avoid any of the rocks thrown at me. Reaching Geodude I pulled back my arm for a swing at him as I lashed out a exotic surge of energy burst through my arm and into my paw, coming out as three shining claws. The force I hit the Geodude with must have been astonishing as it sent the Pokemon flying into its trainer and knocking both of them unconscious.
"Nice metal claw Lucario," said Odai patting me on the shoulder. He moved over to the kid and patted him down pulling a wallet from his back pocket. Opening it he took out several notes leaving the majority of the money in it untouched and stuffed it in his own pocket.
"Normally if you're going to rob someone you take all the money, not a small amount."
Odai shook his head, "It's a standard prize for winning a Pokemon battle, the loser has to fork over some cash to the victor. The rule even applies to gym leaders like Roark at Oreburgh town."
Over the next couple of hours we faced several more trainers; All kids or teenagers with starter Pokemon and other first evolution Pokemon. Odai stuck with using Charmander whenever possible and sent me in when Charmander was tired or injured. Each battle didn't last more than a couple minutes and were relatively straightforward. The only trouble I encountered was another Charmander got of a lucky shot with ember and burned my arm, reeking the air around me with the smell of burnt fur. Odai used a strange liquid on my arm called a full heal, that was able to cure poison, burns, thaw ice, recover someone from paralysis, and even wake someone up. The liquid cured the burn but it still stung and the smell didn't go away.
We sat against a large oak tree for a break and Odai took some bottled water and snack bars from his bag and handed them round.
"I've been thinking," I said to Jakkaru, "If the two of us are sharing the same body, why do I have control when it's you're body? And I wonder if it's possible to swap control?"
"You've got a point, it's possible its because humans have much stronger emotions than some Pokemon but you're right, I wonder if it is possible to swap control... tell you what, breathe calmly and relax, don't fight or it might go wrong."
Doing so I felt a tentative tug on my mind, it grew stronger and all feelings, thoughts, control numbed. Several seconds later feeling returned and everything looked normal, my arm raised itself and I realised I saw as normal, felt as normal, but I couldn't control anything.
"Jakkaru?"
"Yes, I know it feels strange, don't fret, if you want control I'll hand it back over."
"No, you have a walk around, if you've been stuck like this for the last several days I'm surprised you didn't ask about this before."
"If we find your friends we might find the scientists who did this to us and we could 'persuade' them to reverse it."
We carried on walking well into the afternoon. We met a couple more trainers; but only one wanted too battle. I let Jakkaru take over when we battled and again we won except I received a nasty bite wound to my leg when a Poochyena managed to use bite, it had punctured the skin and torn through the flesh but luckily it hadn't broken the bone. I winced as Odai tightened the strap on my leg,
"It shouldn't get infected but its pretty bad and might need stitches, we'll get it checked out at the next Pokemon center.
Odai looked around deep in thought. "We could reach Jubilife some time tonight but it might be an idea to catch another team mate before we leave the path."
Charmander and I both nodded, "It would be nice to have the company," I noted.
We soon found a wild Shinx. It looked like a strangely coloured cat with a star tipped tail.
"How can something like that be electric?" I asked.
The Shinx answered for itself by growling furiously, its fur raised on end and it started to crackle with electricity.
"It's using charge," explained Odai, "Charmander use ember!"
Charmander spat flames at the Shinx who dodged and sent sparks of golden electricity flying towards Charmander who also dodged.
"Charmander use quick attack!" Charmander lunged forwards bowling the Shinx over. "Now finish up with ember!" Charmander use ember, this time connecting with it, Odai threw a pokeball and the Shinx disappeared in a flash of red light. Charmander suddenly started to glow a blinding white light forcing me to look away.
When I looked back a Pokemon like Charmander but taller, leaner and a much darker shade of red stood there.
"Wow, a new team mate and Charmander evolved into Charmeleon." exclaimed Odai.
"Impressive," I noted looking at Charmeleon.
As we walked I looked at the Pokemon listed on the Pokedex to take my mind of my leg which was throbbing crazily. Early on I found the evolutions of Charmander the last one being a giant orange dragon called Charizard. I soon found a Pokemon called Riolu, which evolved into Lucario. No matter their original size or strength it seems Pokemon can evolve to become much bigger and stronger ones.
Lastly, as we reached the city, I found a entry on a Pokemon called Palkia, instead of a picture there was an image of a statue and the description simply stated, 'Believed to be a deity that controls all matter of space and dimensions.' I had a vague memory of someone mentioning it before but couldn't remember where.
At the Pokemon center Nurse Joy, who looked strangely identical to the one I had seen before, welcomed us and told Odai he could sleep upstairs while she healed our cuts and we would be fine by tomorrow. Odai waved goodbye as he walked upstairs and Joy offered me some sleeping tablets.Chapter End Notes:I'll try and keep to a schedule of a chapter a week but no promises, I'm not one for keeping schedules
