Chapter 5 - Reunion

I woke up on a pristine white bed; rolling off I looked at my leg, the black fur had been cleaned of blood, and there was no visible trace of the wound. All the pain had gone as well and when I stood up it felt like normal, at least as normal since becoming a Pokemon.

Nurse Joy came in, "Ah, you're awake, your trainers waiting for you in reception."
"Thanks for healing my leg nurse," I thanked her.
"No problem, please come again if you have any more injuries." She said, leading me through a door into the reception.
Odai looked at me, "How's the leg doing?"
"Fine, its like perfect and she even washed the fur."
"Good, Charmeleon and Shinx are resting in their pokeballs, so we'd better get go-"

He was suddenly cut off in mid sentence as a Tyranitar crashed through the entrance doors, closely followed by a girl who looked like the same age as Odai and a Lucario. Some instinct about being a Pokemon told me that the Lucario was female; the girl and the Lucario were carrying a stretcher between them. On the stretcher was a burly man in camouflage, he was bleeding from scratches all over and his jacket was in tatters.

"Nurse Joy, please help him, we found him on the side walk."
"Oh Arceus, put him on the bench and lets have a look at him."
As they put him on the bench the man moaned softly and turned his head towards me, I recognised him. "General!" I called out, unaware I accidentally yelled it out mentally as well as physically I rushed to his side and as I reached out the General somehow managed to reach out and grab my arm, even though his eyes were blood shot and half closed.

"Please... help... others at... warehouse." He gasped, his hand tightening like a vice grip as he spoke. I turned to Nurse Joy as he let go of my arm, "Where's the closest warehouse?"
"Just up the street and too you're left, why?"
I looked at Odai who nodded in understanding and passed me my bag, I sprinted off through the doors ignoring the wild stares from the other Pokemon and girl.

I turned left at the end of the street and headed towards the warehouse further down the road. "If he's here there is most likely a base as those Team Rocket buffoons said."
"Yes, most likely..." said Jakkaru absently.
"You Ok?"
An image of the female Lucario drifted through the mental link before Jakkaru snapped to attention.
"Never mind, it can wait. If you're taking on guns it might be an idea to have a long range weapon yourself, it's a move called Dark Pulse."

I reached the warehouse and slowed down to a jog as I moved around the side.
"Remember the energy you felt when you used metal claw? Try finding that energy and push it out of your paws, holding it as a ball with your mind. You can then throw it at an enemy."

Finding the energy was much harder than it sounded, I could sense the energy like a misty snake. Mentally I grabbed at it trying to find purchase on the elusive energy. Eventually I felt something, and doing as Jakkaru said, I pushed at it, guiding it through my paws and out. Holding it with my mind, a dark ball of swirling energy formed, growing stronger.

I skidded to a stop as I saw a keypad on the wall of the warehouse. The dark pulse vanished as I lost concentration.
"You need to keep concentration, break it and the power will disappear."
Thinking back I pressed the combination, 6-7-8-9 and a section of the wall pulled back and slid away to reveal a hidden elevator.
"Not much of a secret base," I muttered.

"So what's the plan?"
"Plan? I've been making this up as I go along, I've never been very good with plans."
I looked at the levels, each was listed with a short description: reception, storage, research, holding and power. An idea formed in my head and a I pressed holding.
"It's not a bad plan, you could wait for the police to help though."
"When it comes down to those I know I can't wait, though with my luck it'll all go horribly wrong."
"What's wrong with your luck?"
"I'm a pessimist and I'm stuck inside you."
"Good point, though personally I don't see anything wrong with this body."

Before I could continue the argument the doors opened at storage and a scientist stepped in. To my luck he was so intently studying something on his clipboard that he didn't even see me until the doors closed.
"What the- Ack!"

I cut him of as I grabbed him with my left paw and formed a metal claw in the other. "Stay quiet and I won't be forced to cut you too ribbons." I threatened. The man was shaking visibly and I eased of slightly but kept a claw formed.
"How many guards are there here?"
"I'm not going to tell - Ack!"

I cut him off again as I kicked him between the legs. He fell over groaning, I knelt on him and held my claw infront of his face to emphasise my point, "Once more, How many guards?"
The man was staring wild-eyed and stuttered, "a d-dozen at the most."
"Good, now is there any over ways out of this base without using the elevator?"
"Fire escape."

The doors opened at the holding and several guards stared at me sitting on the scientist. As they reached for the pistols at their sides, I flipped the scientist up and literally threw him into the guards, knocking them over. Concentrating I formed a dark pulse and threw it at the tangle of bodies. It caused a small explosion without the flames as it sent the people spinning away unconscious.

"What was that with the scientist?"
"Have Pokemon never interrogated a human before?"
"Never, no wonder that scientist was so scared, its never happened before."

I walked into the room and looked around, two cages took up each side of the room. The cage on the left had several Pokemon in it, while the cage on the right had four humans wearing camo clothing whom I recognised from my unit, and all were staring at me. Grabbing the keys from an unconscious guard I unlocked the cage with the soldiers in.

I tossed the keys to one of the soldiers who I remembered was called Daniel, and my bag to Davis.
"Help the Pokemon out of here, take the stairs."
Luckily the soldiers training kicked into action and they split off. Michael grabbed a desk and slid it between the open lift doors, this would stop the lift rising and any trouble from that end. James and Davis grabbed the pistols from the guards and handed them around as well as the weapons from the bag. James lingered curiously on my jacket, seeing the name stitched on it and the dog tags as well; he looked at me curiously.

Daniel unlocked the cage, and I told the Pokemon,
"Don't be nervous, these men will lead the way out, help who you can and stay with them."
I headed to the fire escape in the corner and headed down the stairs, trusting the soldiers to help the Pokemon out.

"So you cut the power to stop any system backups and reinforcements being warned."
"That's the plan."
"Why does it seem like you've done this before?"
"I'm a soldier, this is part of my job description, though... I suppose I did see this in a movie once or twice. They conduct research here and if it anything remotely like what they did to me I don't want it getting out."

"Have you noticed how few guards there are?"
"Yes, I'm guessing they were confident this base wouldn't be found, but they don't really expect to be attacked do they? I imagine their boss will have a hard time getting over that one Lucario managed to take down his lab."

I grabbed the handle (which is much harder than it sounds with paws) and turned it slowly, listening for any sounds from the other side.
"Wait, you might not have noticed yet but every move you use takes up energy, the more power you put in the move the weaker you'll be. A fair amount of Pokemon battles not only depend on strength but the Pokemon's stamina."

Keeping that in mind, I opened the door and let loose with smaller, weaker dark pulses at the few engineers gathered around a massive turbine. They didn't stand a chance, before they you could blink they were unconscious. I walked to a console in the corner and attempted to turn it off except I couldn't type anything in with my paws. Frustrated I smashed my paw onto the keyboard.
'Automated shutdown sequence initiated. Backup lights activated.' Droned a voice over a tannoy system.

"That was hardly necessary."
"It worked didn't it?"
"Your lucky you didn't break something, I can also feel pain as well you know."
"Sorry, I never had much luck with technology and these paws are a bit awkward."
"I'm glad you can appreciate what you have," Jakkaru said dryly.

The lights flickered and died to be replaced by a light blue from florescent lights built into the ceiling. Exiting the power room I headed up the stairs, I could hear the muffled sound of gunshots from further up and I started sprinting up the steps 3 at a time. I paused at research, panting, the levels were much larger than I had first thought and it had taken several minutes to get to this level.

The gunfight was louder now and still going strong. The door was open and I could see through it a scientist slumped on the ground, a scalpel clenched tightly in his hand. The way he wasn't moving I could tell he wasn't alive. Ignoring it I carried on up the stairs.

I was getting fairly tired now, "I need to get back in shape," I muttered to myself. It took another minute of sprinting up the stairs to reach the next level. I looked at the storage door, it was slowly swinging on a broken hinge. I glanced briefly inside, rows and rows of shelves with boxes were there, in the closest isle a guard was on his face, several bullet holes in his back.

"This is your job?" Jakkaru stated sadly.
"The bad side yes... but you make the strongest possible friendships in the heat of a battle, you learn to trust, to believe in others."
"But is it always necessary to kill?
"...No."
"No matter the circumstance, you should never have to kill."
"I was never very good at talking about moral issues."

The gunfire suddenly stopped as I finally reached the top level, which was marked as reception. I glanced worriedly through the doorway, and withdrew it almost immediately as the doorframe exploded in a hail of bullets.

"Hold! Hold your fire! It's the jackal from before."
"Jackal? I hardly look like a jackal."
I looked tentatively round the corner, all four soldiers were standing around the group of Pokemon, weapons raised though they didn't fire. The reception was a massive hall like area with a semi-circular desk in the middle, several more guards were slumped against this not moving.

I looked to where the soldiers were held up and noticed why, a blast door had slid into place blocking the stairs to the surface. The soldiers seemed a bit nervous about me, while they weren't actually shooting me they didn't relax the grips on their weapons.

"Any ideas on how to get through this?" asked Davis.
"Maybe."
"Can metal claw cut through this?" I asked Jakkaru.
"I honestly don't know, I don't really make it a habit to try to cut through several inch thick doors."
"That's a lot of help."
"But if you try and strengthen the claw by putting more energy into it you might be able to cut through, though you might want to sit down afterwards."

Ignoring the wild-eyed stares from the soldiers I formed a metal claw and mentally pushed as much energy as possible into it. The claw glowed even brighter as I added more of my energy to it. Once happy I slashed at the door, for several seconds the door stood still then a rectangular hole slowly fell out. The energy left me and I almost fell over as my legs buckled from exhaustion; I blinked wearily and saw that James and Daniel and hooked their arms under me and was carrying me up the stairs.

"Thanks," I muttered to the soldiers.
"No problem, how can you talk or do stuff like that anyway?"
I chuckled dryly, "Personally I have no idea myself, I'll explain the rest later, first lets get out of this hell hole."
The phrase 'go towards the light' entered my head as we opened the door and were blinded by the bright afternoon sun.

As my vision returned I noticed Officer Jenny standing a meter away from us, palms up to show she was no threat.
"I hope that everyone got out ok?"
Michael luckily noticed the uniform and badge and understood her to be a police officer, "Yes, we got everyone out and all the... Pokemon as well, though you might want a few body bags for the guards down there."

"Was it necessary to kill them all?" I asked.
"Maybe not, but we were taking no chances, and the guards often bragged about experiments and what they were going to do to us so we did go a bit over the top. And if you're who I think you are then you're a prime example of why they should be stopped." Said James.

"And who is he?" asked Davis curiously.
I noticed James had managed to keep hold of the bag and standing up gingerly I reached inside, and managed to grab hold of my dog tags, I showed them to the soldiers who stared.
"Ah," said Michael quietly, "We were told that one of our friends had been a test subject for an experiment, but we never thought, we never expected this."

James grabbed me roughly and pulled me into a bear hug, "Man it's good to see you, I trust that since you found us you met up with the general?"
"Yeah, he's resting at the Poke Center."
I turned to Officer Jenny who had been standing politely to the side, "Do you mind if I take them and the Pokemon to the Poke Center?"
"Sure, but they are not to leave it until I say so, there are some questions I need to ask but they can wait until you're rested."
"Thanks."

As I led the soldiers and Pokemon back to the Poke center I explained to them what had happened to me in the last few days.
"Well that does sort of make some sense, our story isn't so dramatic though, like you we woke up prisoners but nothing else really happened. There was someone else with us though, Adrian, remember him? They came to transfer him to another base and the General caused some confusion and escaped."
"So what happened to Adrian?"
"They still transferred him, but from what we were able to understand everyone from the bunker is here somewhere in this world as prisoner of Team Rocket."
I grinned, "That was a bad idea on their part."
Davis chuckled, "The guards were hardly trained, their gonna have a shock when soldiers with spec ops training come bashing down their front door."

"I'll be sticking with Odai, that way I'll be able to search for Team Rocket separately, also their after me and sticking with you will cause whole platoons of them to come after us."
"That's not the only reason though is it?"
"No... I suppose its not the only reason, its also one of those gut instincts, the feeling that you have to."
James patted me on the shoulder, "No worries, just don't get in too much trouble ok?"

As we neared the Poke Center another image floated across the mental link,
"So who is the other Lucario?" I asked Jakkaru.
"Well, you'd find out later anyway I suppose... she's... a friend,"
"A friend? What else, I mean there's no reason to be so secretive, we're literally one in mind and body."
"Fine, she's my mate, I last saw her when I left to go exploring and was captured by Team Rocket."

My mind froze for a moment. Mate? This was going to cause some problems, and even more so be confusing. "Ah, this might be problematic."
"You think so?" he replied sarcastically.
"I think I might let you take over when we talk to her and turn my back and whistle tunelessly."
Chapter End Notes:I know shinx wasn't really mentioned in this chapter though he will be in the next one.

The next chapter will take a while
