Chapter 6

Almost 2 months later...

I woke up one morning. Not from sleeping too much, but from a crying that came from our daughter's crib. I went over to her, thinking that maybe she was having a bad dream, but when I went over there, I realized that wasn't the case.

Over the months, Lorana had filled out on her abilities, almost. She listened to our words a lot, and within the first week, she was talking. It was jumbled words, but she was saying them pretty well. A week after that, she had grasped how and where what words went, and she was creating pretty good sentences.

Then, there was the fact that she was part Fire Pokemon. Another week after learning to talk, she had accidentally burnt a piece of parchment I had started writing on.

In all this time, I was organizing and plotting my way back into Mercury City. I had to get in somehow. I then had a good idea, but it wasn't to last.

I powered on Martha. "Welcome, Den Roka."

I did a double take. "Martha, what did you call me?"

"Den Roka. That is your name, is it not?"

"Uhh, yeah. Tell you what, Martha, I'll just go ahead and give you some rest. Go ahead and shut down."

"Very well, Den. But, before I do, I have been ordered to show you a video."

Martha's face disappeared and in her place was...

"Mac." I said distastefully.

"Well, Den. Do you like your present?" His voice sounded metallic. "You've always been complaining about Martha getting your nickname wrong, so we fixed it up for you! How do you like it?"

I was fuming. I thought this guy was on a one way trip to comaland.

"I can tell what you're thinking right now. You're wondering how I got through that coma. Did you really think that the smartest city in the world would let an important man like me rest in a coma? I think not. See, after I was brought to the hospital, an old friend of yours came to help me out."

And one thing I was not expecting to see... my old friend, Mark.

"Hey, Den! Surprised? Don't be. I've always been good with serums. You know that. I had my Seviper, yes, that was my Seviper; strike me with my own serum, which gave the very appearance of Death. I'm glad you only shoved me in the river, because if I had been burned by that evil witch, I wouldn't have been here to help the greatest boss in the world!"

And to think, I trusted that slime ball. He's gonna pay when he and I get together.

"Now, Den, don't come back. It's all just a big thing with Mac here. If you're going to be just fraternizing with a Pokemon, then you're not a member of Mercury City anymore. In fact, you'd have to be a completely different person to get in now." There was something in his voice. It was strained in the last sentence, almost like he wanted me to get some kind of message. Maybe I still had a friend. "I hope you love your family because there just might be room here for a hostage. But, if you think I'm gonna be the one to do it, my hands are tied with that."

His meaning with that couldn't be any clearer. His family was being held hostage, and they're controlling him. He has no say in any of this.

"Yes, well, thank you, Mark. Oh don't worry, Den. We won't chase you anymore! We already know where you are thanks to Martha." Mac said.

There was an icy chill in my spine. He knew where I was, and he hated the idea of a Pokemon and a human being together. This was not going to be good.

"One more thing, Den. Do try and not let that child of yours die. She could prove very useful in experiments. Hey, who knows? Maybe your idea about Pokemon/Human offspring having longer lives is right! We'll never know unless we have your daughter!" Mark seemed to be iterating the fact that I had a...

Of course! They know the future! They know about Lorana! But how?

"Well, I guess we'll never see you again, Den! Or, maybe we will! But, that's up to you! Bye now!" Mac said and Martha instantly shut off, but before she did, Mark was holding up a sign. No, not a billboard sign. Not only were the Geran good with different words, they were good with hand signs. The one that Mark gave me was Machine. It was crude, but I'd recognize it from anywhere. That proved it. Mark was still a friend in all of this. Which meant that he was gonna help me fight from the inside, but discreetly, cause they had his family.

To think. All these years. Mark had been devastated the day he found out his family had gone missing. His wife, his mother and father; and his wife was pregnant, too! It was gonna be a girl. But all of that had been snatched from him. And he now knew what was going to happen. But what did he mean by Machine? What was the significance in it?

Anyway, back to the present.

There was a cut on her cheek, consistent with a beak peck. She had pecked herself on the chin by mistake. I picked her up out of her crib and carried her to the bathroom and cleaned her cut, kissed it, and put a bandage on it. After I had picked her up, she had stopped crying. After I set the bandage on, I asked "Now we know to be careful, right? That beak you're getting is pretty sharp."

Lorana sniffed once. "Yeah..." She had a baby's voice, and she seemed to be painfully shy. Even around her parents.

"Alright. Now, do you wanna sleep with us tonight, or can you sleep by yourself?"

"It's okay, daddy. I can sleep by myself." And with that, she got up and headed for her crib, about to hop in, but stopped. She then started itching her entire body like crazy, causing cuts to appear on her body.

"Honey, what's going on?!" I hurried and picked her up and itched her body for her so she didn't maim herself.

"It itches! Badly!" was her response.

"Where? Where does it itch?"

"Everywhere! Make it stop, daddy!"

(We Interrupt your regularly scheduled story to bring you a note from the Author!)

Hi. Majinonifox1 here. You're probably thinking right now "How is Lorana only 2 months old and she's already independent when Den's Uncle's and Linda's kid was still acting like a baby?" Well, the answer's simple really. I made it like animals would be in the wild. Naturally, most baby birds are fed for a while, but then about a month and a half later, they're usually flung from the nest, out on their own, hence Lorana's very independent at 2 months. Plus, she's got her daddy's smarts. Now, with Linda's and Kar's kid, that boy was part rabbit, and rabbit offspring generally stay with their mothers for a couple of years, then the kids are grown enough to go out on their own. So, you see, each animal Pokemon is going to have the same characteristics as they would in the wild. I say this because you're gonna meet some other hybrids in the future. SPOILER! Anyway, enjoy the story. Wow. Can't believe that all of this started from a one-shot request from Archer, I think he was.

(We now return you to your regularly scheduled story, already in progress.)

Without thinking, I kept scratching, but hurried out of the house and ran to Nurse Joy's hut, where she did her work. I was surprised to see Sylvia tending the counter.

"Sylvia, where's Nurse Joy? Lorana's itching all over and I'm itching her to keep her from scratching herself to ribbons."

Sylvia stood up and looked at Lorana with a worried look, then just sighed and smiled. "There's no need for Nurse Joy. Lorana's just growing her feathers. Keep itching her and I'll be right back." And with that, Sylvia went into the back room.

I stood there, still itching her, wondering why Sylvia smiled when she looked at her. Then, I thought back to when she was looking at Lorana. But, she wasn't looking at Lorana. She was looking at me.

I looked down at myself and saw I was still in my boxers. I went white as a ghost and looked around. There wasn't anyone else in the Hut, thank whatever deity you want to believe in, and the only people that had seen me, at least to my knowledge, were Sylvia and Lorana.

"Daddy, why am I itchy?" Lorana asked.

I kept itching her as much as I could. "Well, your feathers are growing in. And, Nurse Joy said that it would be an enormous pain to deal with that."

Lorana looked as if she were in pain. "It itches!"

Just then, Sylvia came back in the room with a bottle and a package. "The bottle is a special anti-itch ointment. It'll also help have the feathers grow in smoother. The package is for you, dear."

I took the bag, opening it, and lo and behold, there is a shirt, pants and socks. "Thank you. She was just in pain and I didn't do anything else except get her here straightaway." I took the bottle and said "Honey, I need you to ignore the itching for a minute while I put this on. Can you do that for me?"

Lorana sniffed once more. "Okay." She was trembling all over, but she did her best not to scratch.

I hurried as fast as I could and applied the lotion to everywhere. When I was done, she looked like a pink bundle of chick. I just chuckled. "Well, you won't have a problem standing out!" I chuckled some more.

"Who cares? It doesn't itch anymore!" She jumped once and giggled. I was surprised by how high she had jumped.

I turned to Sylvia. "Any chance she may have her mom's abilities?"

"Hmm. It shouldn't be. She's a female, which means she inherited her abilities from her father."

I did a double take at that. Was there some way that I had some of those abilities? I had to ask Taiyala to assess me in the morning.

"Well, you should be getting on those clothes before you leave here. Don't want some midnight 'owl' catching you unawares and seeing you in your prime." She said the last bit with a giggle.

I hurried and put on the clothes and was glad they fit reasonably well.

"There. Now you're not so revealing." Sylvia said with a laugh.

I smiled. Then, I looked around for a clock. I found one and it just clicked to 4:42 AM. "Geez! It's that late? I don't think I'll be able to get back to sleep after all of this excitement."

"Well, I just remembered something. Nurse Joy wanted me to do a blood sample of you, Den. Do I have your permission to draw a bit of your blood?"

I thought for a minute. Why would Nurse Joy want some of my blood? Oh well. "Sure!" I held out my arm and awaited the draw.

"Oh, you need to be sitting down for this. Our way of drawing blood is more primitive than how you're probably used to, being from Mercury City." Sylvia said.

"Oh. Okay, then. Lora, honey, I need you to turn around for a minute."

"Aww, okay." Lorana said reluctantly, and turned around. As soon as she did, I sat down and held out my arm, showing the crook of my elbow. I remembered how the blood draw process was done here. I just didn't know if they had upgraded their system at all. Sylvia tied a thin strip of rubber tightly around my upper arm. As soon as she did that, a vein popped up in the crook of my elbow. Sylvia then took a needle and inserted it in the vein. It felt weird, but as soon as it was in, it didn't really feel all that bad. All I felt was pressure, and that was it. Two minutes later, Sylvia removed the needle and said "All finished! Now would you like a lollipop?" She said that last part like a baby.

"No thanks." I said with a bit of disgust. I hated it when I was treated like a baby.

"Okay. No need to get testy. How about you, darlin? You want a sucker?"

I just stood there and watched the magic happen. This was gonna be a wakeup call for Sylvia.

"No, but do you want one?" Lorana said as sweetly as she could. I had to bite my cheek to keep from laughing.

"Well, sure! Where is it?" Sylvia asked like a baby again.

At that precise moment, Lorana turned around so fast, it looked as if she were just hiding her face from the view of the world. As she did this, her right fist came up and whacked Sylvia right in the side of the head. This sent her flying to the side and knocking into the wall. "Sucker... Punch. Next time you treat me like a baby, it'll be worse." Lorana still looked so sweet and innocent. Noone would have guessed that she had just decked someone unless they were here to witness the event for themselves.

Sylvia caled weakly from the wall "Duly noted."

I just stood there and laughed. "Ready to go, Lora?" I asked.

"Yeah, I'm ready." With that, she moved over to my side and stood there waiting.

"Thank you for giving us that lotion, Sylvia."

"No problem." She said weakly still. "Apply it as needed after the previous application is absorbed into the skin. Once the bottle runs out, her feathers should be fully developed out."

"Thank you." With that last word, I walked out of the hut, Lorana following.

"Sir, you don't know what you're doing."

"I know perfectly well what I'm doing, now get that machine into position!"

The grunt sighed. "Yes sir."

There was a whirring, then a clank. Mac is connected with a cannon that is aimed right for Kyodeon Town. Is that cause for concern?

I thought about that for a while. Then, I went up to Mac. "Sir, don't you think you're going just a bit overboard?"

"Quiet, Mark, or I'll kill your family." Mac said calmly.

I cursed under my breath. I was only allowed to see my family once. And then, it wasn't a happy reunion. I saw my mother's and my father's corpses. My newly born daughter was frightened of me, my Wife was just too out of it... It was not a happy family get-back-together.

Now, all I could do was try to get Den in somehow. But how? I figured the answer would come to me in time. But for now, I hoped he got away from Kyodeon Town.

'Please be safe, Den.'
