Chapter 2

POKEMON RANCHER
CH. 2

I had been working at the factory for about two or three years now and everyone knew about me and my condition, or at least not to talk about Pokemon around me. It has been five years to date since my father was murdered. My life had grown into a steady schedule, get up, eat breakfast, go to work, come home, eat dinner, shower, then go to bed. Most people would think this a rather absurd, but it was practically the only thing that kept me from falling into a deep depression.

I woke up in my old bedroom and looked around to see all the boxes packed around it. I was moving out in a few days and into my own place across town. So I stretched and got up. Off in the distance I could hear a Dodrio call out when the sun started to rise over the mountains in the distance. After I had fully stretched out my arms I jumped out of bed.

"Man I don't know what it is about today, But man I feel really good". So I picked up my cloths that were sitting on the chair next to my bed and got dressed. Looking in the mirror at my reflection there stood a young man about 6'3", with Brown hair, and a slight signs of growing a belly. The cloths I had chosen today were my usual white t-shirt, dark blue pants, and brown hiking boots. Once done I walked down stairs to find my mom at the breakfast table reading the news paper. "Good morning mom, how are you doing this beautiful morning"?

She set the paper down and looked up to me with a smile. "Well good morning Dusty. What's got you so happy this morning"? I leaned over and gave her a quick peck on the cheek.

"Honestly mom I don't know, but I really feel good today". So I sat down and noticed that there was a large plate of pancakes with syrup. "Thanks for the pancakes mom". She gave me a smirk then picked up her paper again and started to read. So I started to eat my pancakes and I realized that they were filled with pieces of bananas in it. "Wow mom, thanks". She lowered a piece of her paper and gave me a smile then returned to her paper.

So I finished my breakfast and placed my plate and utensils in the sink. I looked over to the clock above the sink and saw that I didn't have that much time before I needed to head off to work. "Well mom, I guess I should head off to work now".

"Alright Dusty, make sure you take the lunch that I've made for you". I nodded then looked over to the cutting board and saw a brown lunch bag. I grabbed the bag and quickly ran over to my mother and gave her another quick kiss then ran out the door. It took me about 15 minutes to reach the warehouse from the tail I had blazed behind our house. When I arrived there the boss was just opening the side door.

"Well good morning Dusty. What are you doing here so early"?

"Well Rick, I just thought that the sooner I got here the sooner I could get more work done".

"Sure...Dusty, you probably just want to go to lunch earlier or home sooner". I smiled and nodded to him. "Busted". With that we both started to laugh. "Alright Donovin, which do you want? Do you want to go home earlier or have a longer lunch"? A smirk crossed my mouth.

"You know me to well". We both laughed. "Well if it's alright, might I have a longer lunch"? Rick nodded and we both walked inside. About four hours later I left the warehouse and walked over to my favorite lunch spot. It was a spot underneath a large weeping willow that draped over a small stream that was full of Magicarp. I sat down and leaned against the trees trunk and looked up. The sun was high in the sky and shot its warm beams through the leaves and branches of this old tree. I smiled and opened my lunch sack.

Inside was a box drink, with a bag of chips, and two sandwiches. I smiled thinking about how much my mother cared about me and took care of me when I was ill. So I pulled out the sandwich to realize that it wasn't the bread I thought it was. For you see the bread that was there was her home made kind. Now mind you, my mother is a great cook, but when it comes to bread she always had to try something new. A new way to heat the bread or a new recipe.

This time it was a new recipe, and unfortunately this recipe called for a certain type of additive that I positively hated. It was full of dried berry seeds. With a heavy sigh I started to tear the bread into small balls and threw them into the stream. As the balls landed on the stream all the Magicarp would come out and start snatching up the balls. This went on for a while until most of my first sandwich was gone, then without warning all the Magicarp quickly darted away.

"Well that's weird". So I took the rest of the sandwich and tossed it into the river and closed my eyes. I guess that some predator had arrived or something bigger had just scared them off. So I let the suns warm rays play across my face when I heard a large splash. I opened my eyes to see that the bread had disappeared. So I guess that answers my question. Something larger must have swum in and eaten up the last half of my bread. I reached into my sack and pulled out the other sandwich and started to ball it up, but when I threw the bread balls in nothing happened.

I guess that whatever had eaten the last of my bread had left. So I watched to see if the Magicarps would return. I waited for a while but nothing happened. So I closed my eyes again and enjoyed the sun. Just as I had closed my eyes, there came another splash. I opened my eyes a little quicker this time to see a blue tip of something quickly disappear under the waters surface. I smiled thinking whatever this thing is, it was the cause or all the Magicarps fleeing the area. So I closed my eyes most of the way to see if I could get a look at whatever this thing is.

Sure enough just as my eyes were almost closed one of the balls disappeared under the surface. Just then my watch started to beep, signaling the end to my lunch. So I put the rest of my bread back into the sack and started to walk back to work. I was a little way away from the river when I heard a soft mew come from the river. I stopped and looked over my shoulder to see a wondrous sight. There on the stream bed was a Dratini. I couldn't believe my eyes, here sitting right in front of me was one of the most legendary aquatic creatures that was just shy of legendary.

I slowly took a knee and a smile slowly crossed my legs. I didn't want to scare off this little creature, and seeing a really tall thing standing over you would cause anybody to be afraid.

In a soft and calm voice I asked, "Well hello there little one. Did you enjoy those bread balls?" The Dratini backed off a little, obviously not used to having a human talk to it. Fortunately enough it stopped just shy of the waters edge, obviously getting ready to flee the area in a hurry if need be. I quickly thought that if I tried to talk to the Dratini again it would most likely dart into the water and swim away. So I reached into my lunch sack and pulled out the rest of the bread that I had left and held it up. The Dratini cocked it's head to the side and gave off a small cry.

So seeing that it didn't dart back into the water I pulled off a little bread and balled it up and tossed it along the ground. It looked at the ball that was rolling towards it then it's eyes went wide. I guess it realized what it was, because when the ball got close enough to it it quickly snatched it up and ate it. When it finished the ball it looked back to me and gave off a happy little cry and opened it's mouth. So I quickly balled up the rest of my bread and continued to feed it.

When the bread was all gone the Dratini opened it's mouth and cried out again, obviously wanting more. "I'm sorry little one. I don't have any more". The Dratini gave off a slow and almost mournful cry. "But if you're here tomorrow, I will come back with some more". When the Dratini heard this it bounced around and gave off a happy tune. With that I stood back up and started back to the warehouse, while waving back to the Dratini. Just as I was about to lose sight of it it slithered into the water.

The rest of the day seemed to pass by in a blur. I just couldn't stop thinking about that Dratini and how cute it was. Finally the boss got tired of my lack of luster performance and told me to take the rest of the day off. So I quickly ran home and started looking up information about Dratini's. I was then awoken from my happy state when the door opened then closed, signaling that my mother had returned from her job. So about an hour later my mother called up to me for dinner. So I shut my computer off and ran downstairs.

"So what's put you in such a happy mood this evening"? My mother asked me once we were sitting at the table. I didn't know if I should tell her about the Dratini or not but since my mother didn't show that much interest in continuing her Coordinator career I thought it couldn't hurt.

"Well mom, you aren't going to believe what happened to me today". I looked down and saw that we were having spaghetti tonight.

"Well don't keep your mother in suspense, tell me what happened". My mother was always one for gossip.

"I'll tell you under one condition".

"And that is"?

"That you don't tell anybody about what I'm going to tell you. And you don't go out and catch it". This got her to lean a little closer to me. "Promise"!

"Alright I promise already. Now tell me already". I gave my mother a hard look and she nodded.

"Alright, when I was eating my lunch by the stream behind the warehouse that I work at, I...saw...a...Dratini". My mother squealed. Then I regretted telling her, because I just then remembered that my mothers favorite Pokemon is a Dratini. I slapped myself upside the head. Now she was going to go out and catch it.

"I want you to tell me everything. But don't worry. I'm not going to go out there and catch it. After all, I promised". I took a long sigh of relief. So I went into excruciating detail about how I met the Dratini and if my mother would give me more of the bread, I would go out there again and feed it.

"Of course I'll give you some more bread to feed it tomorrow. I'm just really excited the you are showing such interest in Pokemon again". So with that we started to talk all about Dratini's. We talked throughout dinner, washing the dishes, and finally stopped when I needed to take my shower. I climbed into bed and placed my hands behind my head and looked up at the ceiling.

'I wonder what that Dratini is doing right now'? It took me quite a while until I was able to fall asleep since my mind kept coming back to the Dratini. Finally sleep came and then the dreams came, but this time it wasn't my dad that was morning the lose of his Pokemon, it was me over the Dratini.
