Chapter 8
POKEMON RANCHER
CH. 8
I reached behind me and pulled out one pokeballs and enlarged it. Then I knelt down so I was a little closer to the Pokemon and held out my hand with the ball in the middle of my hand. "I make this promise to you Torchic." The Torchic stopped bouncing around and walked over. "I promise to keep you safe and happy. But, I am afraid that I wont have you battle against any other Pokemon Torchic. So if you still want to come along with us all you have to do is tap the center of this button and you can come with us." Torchic looked up at Dratini and I did too, only to see her give Torchic a sweeping notion with her nose then I turned back to Torchic to see it peck the button.
The ball popped open and the Torchic faded into a red light and zip right into the open ball. The ball quickly snapped shut and I waited to see if it would wobble. I was quite amazed when the ball didn't even wobble a little and to further my surprise it pinged. I guess the Torchic was ok with being caught by me and let itself be caught. I looked up at Dratini.
"Well it looks like we just got ourselves a new friend". Dratini let out a happy tune and I reached up and rubbed her cheek. So I pointed the ball towards the ground and hit the activator switch and out popped Torchic. It looked around it's surrounding then turned back to me. I held out my arms and it quickly ran over and jumped into my waiting arms. I hugged the Torchic close. "Welcome to the family Torchic." Dratini let out a happy tune as she slithered down my arm and nuzzled the Torchic.
Many days passed as the three of us continued on the road to who knows where, when a young man jumped out of a nearby bush. The young man looked no older than nine years of age and he was wearing such an unusual outfit. The outfit looked like it was make of leaves and sticks.
"Hold it right there." The boy said in a demanding voice pointing at me.
"What do you want?" I asked in a still startled voice.
"You have a very rare Pokemon there." I looked up at Dratini then back at the boy. "I want to battle you for it." I smiled at him and laughed at him.
"No."
"What do you mean no?"
"I said what I mean. No. You don't even look old enough to have a Pokemon partner." This only seemed to make him angry.
"Battle me!"
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Just then the memories started to flow. The memory of my father and his Umbreon dieing right in front of my eyes. I didn't know what was more scary. Seeing my father murdered before my eyes or my favorite Pokemon die as well. Both images raked at my heart. Then blackness. Shear blackness. A void, deprived of light, sound, taste, and smell. I don't know how long I lay there, naked, curled up in the fetal position, crying my eyes out. I felt so weak and helpless, just like a newborn babe.
Then out of the dark abyss I heard a soft mew come from somewhere in the distance. I slowly opened my eyes. At first I couldn't see or hear anything but then I heard something mew again. It was a such a sad sound, like something crying. I uncurled myself from that position and looked around. I couldn't see anything, not even my hand when I lifted it right in front of my face. Why is it that in the darkest of night there is always a sign of hope, or life. I started to make my way towards the sound. Though no matter how quickly I walked the sound just seemed to be just out of reach, until finally I could see something blue.
I quickly made my way over to this blue thing. As I drew closer to it I could see that it was shaking, then I noticed that it also seemed to be crying. Once I was right next to the thing I knelt down next to it and lay my hand on it. The thing stopped crying right then and there. It slowly looked up at me with tears running down its cheeks.
"Why do you cry little one?" I asked it.
"I cry because I miss my friend." I didn't know what this thing was, but this creature was in need of help and I saw sure that I wouldn't leave it alone.
"Do you have a name, little one?"
"No I do not. Though I am a Dratini." I racked my brain to think of a name for this Dratini, because it wouldn't be proper to call this creature by what it was. Then out of the darkness came a name.
"Little one." The Dratini looked up at me. "How does the name Crystal suit you?" The Dratini cocked it's head to the side considering the name then gave me a smile.
"I like that name. Thank you for giving it to me." I smiled then started to rub Crystal behind what looked like a set of fins on it's head. Crystal started to croon and leaned into my rubbing.
"So what do you say? Shall we leave this dark place?" Crystal nodded then I picked her up and placed her around my shoulders, since if we came across something I would need to use my hands. They would be free to accomplish that task. Then I began to walk.
"It is strange." I looked up at Crystal.
"What's that Crystal?" She looked down to me.
"My friend used to carry me around just like your doing now." I gave it a smirk and I continued to walk. As I walked I came across another strange creature. It was small, orange, and covered in feathers.
"Crystal."
"Hm?"
"Do you know what kind of creature this is?" She looked down and saw what I was pointing at. The creature seemed to be sleeping.
"Yes, it's called a Torchic. Though this is also strange." I looked up at Crystal. "I seem to recall that my friend also had a Torchic like this one. Only the Torchic had a scar on its right leg." I knelt down and saw that this Torchic did indeed have a scar on it's leg, just like Crystal had said. I reach out and gently shake the Torchic.
"Are you alright there little one?" The Torchic moves a little then opens it's eyes. It looks up at me then I can see it's eyes are very red as if it's been crying for quite a while. "What are you doing here little one?" In a small quiet voice it answers.
"The last thing I remember is a young man jumping out of some bushes and challenging my friend to a duel then everything went dark."
"What's your name little one?"
"I do not have one". So I look over this Torchic and see that it's feathers remind me of a certain stone that I had seen.
"How does the name Ruby sound to you, little one?" It closed it's eyes then a smile slowly crept across it's face (If you can image a Torchic smiling).
"I like it, I like it a lot." I pick Ruby up in my hands and cradle it. So I introduce Ruby to Crystal an vise versa. Then Crystal rubs against my cheek.
"We have not gotten your name stranger." I turn to her and smile.
"Oh, sorry about that. My name is Dusty." Just then both Crystal and Ruby start to chant.
"Wake up Dusty, you must wake up Dusty. Come back to us, we need you Dusty." I close my eyes and when I open them again I feel something wet against my forehead. As my vision starts to clear I can make out the eyes of someone looking over me. Just then the person pulls away and a weird after shadow follows them. Just before this person pulls to far away I can hear it say something. The voice almost sounds feminine but it's to hard to tell, since the voice seems to come from a great distance off. Or my brain doesn't seem to register it.Chapter End Notes:Disclaimer: All publicly recognizable characters, settings, etc. are the property of their respective owners.
