Trials of Fire and Water

Welcome dear friends, to a tale of people much like yourselves. Who like you work hard, and make sacrifices
so that their world can continue on as it has. These are the Pokémon of the Lavender fire fighter patrol.

I'm so bored!" A trim Lopunny whined, leaning over from her hammock.

"Just because you bored, not mean you be noisy! Me trying sleep, be bored tomorrow." Grumbled a clearly annoyed Aggron, He was trying to find a comfortable position a few feet away. His large stature made it difficult, as
the room was not built for someone his size.

"It bad enough me squashed, no need hear you complain how bored you is." He snorted, ending with a deep
"Gron'

< Will you two keep quiet. Some of us are trying to sleep. It's bad enough I have to try and rest around you; your breath are noisy, and the last thing I want is to be tired .> Sitting in the corner of the room, twitching his tail in irritation was an Espeon. He chose to speak with telepathy, rather than spend the energy to sit up and verbalize his thoughts.

A well groomed Houndoom decided it was time to add into the brewing fight. He looked up at the trio, staring at each in turn. "Brothers and sister! Let us not fight on such a fine night, but calm and loving in this hour of serenity." He stated passionately, tossing his head back in emphasis. '

The other occupants glared back, all shouting "Shut up!" in unison. *The Houndoom, sighed, letting his head rest on the pillow.

"Ah man, he's doing it again. Why do you have to butt in when you know what's coming? It always ends the same; you go silent and pout on your pillow. Grow up!" The Lopunny huffed, flicking her ears with a paw, causing them to dance. "Damn it now my ears are twitching!"

< Serves you right for lecturing him again. You know how he feels about being talked down to. > The Espeon said matter of factly.

"You's not better than any of us. Just because you got big brain and fancy powers not make you exception. Me thinks you need... uhh..." The Aggron trailed off, a tinge of red showing in the cracks of his iron faceplate. The Espeon smirked, a flicker of light shining flashing across his forehead gem. An awkward silence followed, several glances passing between the four.

"Ok... what did you show him now, Esperon? You aren't filling his head with more images, are you? She huffed loudly, nearly falling from her hammock. "I swear if you keep that up he'll end up as perverted as you!" The rabbit scoffed, struggling to control her ears.

Esperon stood up angrily, his forehead gem beginning to glow. "Excuse me? You go around looking at us like choice meals, and you have the nerve to call me a pervert? Just because I came from a breeding center, and had a small crush on Vee?!"

"Hey, you're the one who let him screw you, so don't get mad at me." She shouted in response, bunching her paw into a makeshift fist. Without another word Esperon stood up, glaring at the rabbit before walking out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

"Me thinks you went too far that time, Lexi." The Aggron stated, regaining his composure.

"You think?!" Lexi shouted back tossing her paws in the air in frustration. The Aggron fixed her with a menacing glare, bright blue eyes hardening. "Fine! I'll go talk to him." She said eventually, flipping backward off her hammock, landing with a grace only her species can attain. With a sigh, Lexi followed after the angered feline, ignoring the icy stare from the Aggron.

Outside, she found Esperon staring into space, unaware or ignoring her presence. She coughed, trying to swallow her pride and say what needed to be said.

"Look I'm sorry about commenting about you and Vee, but you..." She paused, waiting for the feline to say something. When no response came, she huffed loudly.

"Hey this is hard enough to bring up as is, you don't need to sit there and-" Her words were cut short by a loud bang from outside, followed by a low rumble that shook their small house. Ignoring the silent Espeon, she rushed to a nearby window, turning back and shouting orders.

"Guys, get out here! We have a big job to do!" The Aggron and Houndoom grumbled, their voices muffled by the door.

"I mean it! Get out here Macbeth! You too Ironhide!" Lexi called out again, staring out the window.

"You knows me take time to leave room, why you need me so fast?" Ironhide responded harshly, trying his best
not to dent the wall with his thick tail.

"Our brother makes a fine point, Lexi. Is this in regards to the explosion we just heard?" Macbeth inquired, squeezing past Ironhide.

*"Just look out the window!" She responded, waving a paw frantically. Without waiting for a response, Lexi bounded for the front door, not looking back. The trio followed in her steps, not questioning the abrupt change of pace. Only Esperon stayed for a moment, watching the growing inferno, shivering before turning and following his team.

The team fought their way across town, struggling to keep the humans and other pokemon in check, while working to control the rapidly spreading fire. The summer grass that had been neglected was the first to ignite, burning quickly. The flames crept along the volatile ground, leaving only ash in its wake. Next were the Junipers people planted and neglected, each one turning from a brown and green eyesore, to a blazing torch; sparks from these fires spread to homes, flames dancing along the dry shingles.

Several well placed ice punches, and a few strained blasts of water pulse later brought some of the fires under control. But, for each one they subdued, two more ignited from the sparks, every new fire adding its own life to the lethal inferno. For each attack the team launched, another fire belched its choking haze into the air, coating the four with ash.

The humans were busy taking care of the west end of town, fighting for their very livelihood. And the Pokemon added their own talents, many using whatever attack could combat the fire, and those who couldn't carried buckets of water to the line; all prejudice was forgotten in defiance of a common enemy.

As dawn broke over the smoke choked horizon, a cheer went up through the assembled town. The combined effort had encircled the raging flames, pushing them one bucket, one attack at a time toward the center of town. Only Esperon was quiet, eyes focused not on the dwindling fire, but into the sky.

With the fires waning, only one task remained; a search and rescue into a few buildings still unsecured. The humans and Pokemon split into groups, moving quickly through the empty streets, leaving the team of four to deal with a pair of squat buildings alone.

"Alright, that larger building has some time, so we'll hit it last!" Lexi pointed toward a three story complex, motioning instructions toward the other.

"Ironhide! Get me and Esperon up there! Macbeth you take the first floor! We need to get everybody out of there now!" She ordered, ignoring the annoyed snort from Ironhide.

"Me hates it when you shout orders, and not ask me what me thinks!" Ironhide growled, but complied reluctantly. He grabbed both Lexi and Esperon, pulling both arms back before launching his living cargo toward the building. Esperon formed a glowing shield around his body, smashing through an upper window with ease.

Lexi on the other hand shot upward, twisting her body midair and falling to the roof. Flecks of ice formed on her paws, melting as she approached her target. With practiced skill, she directed the energy into the rooftop, sending trails of ice zig-zagging across the roof. Whatever the shards of cold touched froze instantly, creating a bizarre maze of sculptures for a second, before they melted from the heat.

Macbeth crashed through the front door, smashing the burning piece of wood inward, oblivious to the heat. He soon returned carrying a pair of children; one riding on his back, the other held by the shirt from the canine's jaw.

Ironhide attacked the flames with a mixture of earthpower and water pulse, creating a torrent of mud and water that suffocated whatever they touched. Large clouds of steam rose from the building, puffing from beneath the thick gunk.

Esperon emerged from the dying blaze, setting a pair of frightened humans down on the sidewalk. They stumbled off toward the watching crowd amid cheers and praise. Esperon said nothing, instead turning toward what was left of the fire, doing what he could to assist the tiring Aggron.

Their main task finished, the team turned toward the larger building, all of them swallowing before charging the out of control blaze. Esperon looked toward the inferno, shivering again; he sighed to himself, running alongside Ironhide

By the time they arrived, Lexi was already barking out orders The house was unstable, making sending Macbeth in a suicide run. Esperon took charge, scanning the building before explaining what he found.

< The upper levels are about to collapse, and there are humans in there; two on the third floor, and another on the second. Ironhide, get me in the middle window > He pointed with his tail, staring at the window and continuing. < I can get them all, but we have to hurry! > His 'voice' wavered a bit, but was convincing; Lexi gave the feline a questioning look, wanting to speak up but knowing they didn't have time.

< GO! > Ironhide picked up the Espeon gently, taking careful aim; in those moments, Lexi thought she heard him say 'I never got to tell you... Goodbye, Vee...'. Before she could speak, Ironhide swung, sending the ball of purple hurtling toward his destination.

Lexi mulled over those last words, realizing only too late what they meant; two humans floated toward the ground, dropping a few feet as with a startled cry, the building began to collapse. Bricks, burning wood, and metal caved inward, piling on where the feline had just entered.

"get me up there now!" Lexi shouted, running toward Ironhide. The Aggron didn't argue, grabbing the rabbit roughly and hurtling her toward the crumbling roof. She landed in a roll, nearly falling through the newly formed hole; Esperon stared up at her from the second floor, giving her a pained smile as he sent the last human to safety

"Hang on, I'm coming do-" A wave of psychic energy shoved the struggling Lopunny back, knocking her clear of the roof as the brick finally gave. She stretched out a paw fultilly, tears rolling down her cheeks as one of her own was consumed by the dying building.

Ironhide bellowed from below, charging the rubble like a bulldozer. Chunks of brick and wood flew back in a storm as he dug, tearing at the rubble in a frenzy. Time slowed as he worked, nobody dared speak for fear of what they knew had to be true... finally, with a roar Ironhide hauled a crumpled form from the rubble.

"He not breathing... Paramedic! Need Paramedic!"
Chapter End Notes:Hopefully we're in time...

Yes, this is insanely rough. It's what you call desperation becoming motivation
