The First Trainer by mechsrule

Story Notes:

Yeah. I'm back. So anyway, I haven't made a verdict on whether or not I will revive NTG. I have decided a few things about it though. First, this is only if I do decide to revive it, it will be an almost total rewrite. The whole past thing was stupid so that will be dropped. So that can be considered non canon. However, this story is canon on what is non canon. If that makes sense. If you wanna know what's going on, read NTG for all the failure that it is. The warnings and such may or may not change as the story goes (depends how I feel), I haven't mapped it all out yet. This story shows how the first trainer came to be, and highlights one of my personal favorite psychic type Pokemon, Xatu. Anyway, I hope you like my story.Hey disclaimer:Disclaimer: All publicly recognizable characters, settings, etc. are the property of their respective owners. Chapter 1

It all began millennia ago. Back then, humans and pokémon were at war. I know that must sound strange, but it's true. The fighting had been terrible; many pokémon species were nearly wiped out. Not all pokémon and humans were enemies, they got along in some of the border towns, but that was about the extent of it. Anyway, this story starts far away from the fighting, in a major human city in the Kanto region. The city's are dense and over populated, but to expand would mean having to deal with the enemy and the army was stretched thin enough. The houses were compact, just a few stories tall, and packed together. In one such house, a little girl, only about ten slept. And this is where our story begins.
The girl, Sara, was sound asleep, as was her entire family. She was a normal, 10 year old, about 4' tall, with long brown hair that flowed down her back. She didn't know it but a large figure had just appeared in her room, as if out of nowhere. The figure reached out a hand towards her and placed it on her forehead. She twitched at this, but didn't leave her slumber. After a moment, the figure retreated and vanished, but not before depositing an ovular object on the carpeted floor.
The bright morning sun shone through the window, onto the bed beneath it. Sara opened her bright blue eyes and yawned. She looked out the window, and despite the filthy street below, saw a beautiful day. She turned to get dressed but was shocked to find what looked to be a giant egg, sitting on the floor. Curious, she walked over and sat down next to it. Reaching out cautiously, she touched it gently. When nothing happened, Sara grew bolder and picked it up and began turning it over, wondering how it could have got there. A faint crack almost caused her to drop the egg, but she held on and put it down gently. Whatever was in the egg was about to hatch. The egg shook, and shattered.
In the middle of the chips, sat a small green bird. It began immediately preening its red and gold wings. Sara looked at the bird, and the lone feather in its crest. This was no ordinary bird. She pulled out her 'Threat Guide', a guide to all pokémon, listed in a letter based threat order: (I'm doing this once to make it clear)
A-Extremely dangerous even to a large group (includes most evolved steel, rock, and psychic types)
B-Dangerous to a small group (includes unevolved members of group A, as well as many fire, fighting, ice, grass, poison, ghost, electric and ground types. Togetic is a member oddly)
C-Challenging to an individual (includes water, dark, bug, flying, and normal types. Togepi is a member due to metronome)
D-Little treat (includes unevolved members of previous groups.)
E-No treat/ Passive (includes all babies, and Togekiss. The togepi line is the only line to go backwards at any point other then cocoon phases, which are in this group)
Sara flipped through the pages and found a picture showing the ball of feathers before her. The page read "Natu, rank-D. While small and weak, its psychic powers give it its higher rank. It can easily be defeated any number of ways, just beware of its dormant powers." Sara wasn't sure was the book meant by "dormant powers", but the Natu seemed harmless enough. It had finally noticed her and was hopping around happily chirping "Nat! Nat!"
"So this is a pokémon." Sara said quietly, poking the bird.
"Nat!" the tiny bird protested, puffing itself up, but at 8", it couldn't intimidate much.
"You don't look dangerous. I'm going to make you my pet!" Sara decided.
"Nat?" the bird said curious, turning its head, or in it's case, its whole body.
"You like that word huh?" Sara teased. "Then that's your name. Nat!" She decided. (rhymes with 'hat' incase you were wondering)
"Nat!" the bird chirped.
"Sara? Are you up yet sweetie?" came a motherly voice from downstairs.
"Yes! Just getting dressed mom!" Sara lied, quickly picking up the pieces of the egg and hiding them under the bed, then hurriedly got dressed. "Now where can you go..." Sara wondered, picking up Nat. "Can you wait here? I'll be back. Wait here!" She said, placing the bird on her bed. The bird seemed to understand, because when she left, it didn't leave the bed.
"You ready for school yet?" Sara's mom asked when she came down stairs.
"Almost." Sara replied. She hopped up on her chair and ate the breakfast her mother had made, brushed her teeth and went back to get Nat. The bird was still there, waiting for her. "Here, hide under my hat." Sara said, placing the bird on her head, and then placed the hat on, leaving room for the bird, but the hat would be prone to falling off it jarred. As quickly as she could, Sara left the house and went off towards the school. There was still time before class, so she began hunting around for food to feed Nat. She found a few berries and slipped them into her hat, making sure no one saw.
Soon the bell rang and Sara slipped into her seat, taking care to put her hat into her desk, so Nat could move around. The bird seemed to know to keep quiet because it didn't chirp. Class passed slowly, Nat pecking lightly at her fingers occasionally. This routine continued for several weeks, and no one noticed the small bird Sara brought to school every day. She didn't get along with the others so she spent recess with Nat, which was easy. The school was build haphazardly, as was all the buildings, so Sara was able to find a small area where they couldn't be seen easily, and only if someone walked over could they be seen, but it would be easy to hear someone coming.
"I wonder when you start flying." Sara said, watching Nat walk around. A twig snapped behind her and she instinctively hid Nat under her hat.
"What'cha got there Sara?" Asked Chris, the local bully, flanked by his two cronies.
"I'm just eating my lunch." Sara said, holding up her brown bag.
"Oh. That's nice. I was just getting hungry. Whadda you have?" Chris asked, grabbing the bag and pulling out the contents. "Hey, cookies!"
"Give that back!" Sara demanded, trying to jump and grab it, but the bully easily held it out of her reach.
"Who's going to make me?" Chris laughed. Meanwhile, Nat had shaken off the hat and jumped Chris, pecking him on the head. "Get off!" Chris roared, grabbing the little bird and holding him up to see what attacked him. "Just a bird." He scoffed, tossing Nat away.
"Nat!" Sara shrieked.
"So that's your bird. Now I know who to punch for that!"
"No!" Sara whimpered, curling into a ball. The three closed in on her. If they had been paying attention, they would have noticed the flash of light behind them, but they didn't. Sara closed her eyes and braced for the beating but there was a gust of wind, and some confused cries, then nothing. Something feathery rested on her shoulder. She looked up and saw a massive, 5 foot bird towering over her. Alarmed, she cowered back.
"Don't worry. It's alright." A voice in her head said. It sounded wise and calm. This did little to calm her. "It's me. Nat."
"Nat?" Sara said confused.
"Yes. I have... evolved." The voice said. "I can speak to you like this, through my mind."
"How did this happen?" Sara asked. "Where is Chris?"
"I don't know how this happened. And I used my powers to protect you. They are fine, they just ran away. You hatched me and raised me, so I will protect you as long as I am able."
"This way! The pokémon is over this way!" Came a shout, followed by running feet.
"We must go." Nat said. Still confused, Sara stood up, but before she could run, Nat wrapped his wings around her, and an instant later, they were in her room. Nat released her. "I must leave now."
"I'm so confused." Sara said, sitting down.
"Now that I've evolved, people will come for me. To kill me. I may have been young but I heard it all. You can just claim you thought I was a bird. That should work to keep you out of trouble. I want nothing more then to stay here, but I cannot. You will never see me again, but it is for the best. I just wanted to say goodbye." Nat explained, embracing Sara in his wings. He released her and opened the window.
"Wait, I'm going with you." Sara said, grabbing his back.
"You belong here. I belong with other pokémon. This is the way of the world." Nat said.
"You're my friend. I'm not letting you go alone. I just need a minute and we can go." Sara said defiantly.
"I think I can carry you and fly." Nat agreed. Sara hurriedly collected some clothes and began stuffing them in a bag. Then, a knock on the house door. A conversation muffled by the floor, then feet rushing up the stairs. Terrified, Sara slung the bag over her back, as the door was kicked open.
"That wasn't locked idiot!" said one of the soldiers now entering her room, smacking another it the back of the helmet.
"I know, but it's just something I've always wanted to do." The other replied.
"Shut up you two." Shouted a third, obviously in charge. While this was going on, Nat had brushed Sara behind him, and spread his wings out. As a last though, Sara grabbed her 'Threat Guide' and stuffed it in her pocket. "Alright scum, unhand the girl!"
"Xat!" Nat cawed, the send telepathically to all "Or what? You shoot me, you'll hurt her."
"Oh well. Friendly fire." The leader shrugged, signally them to begin firing. Sara balled up again, watched as the bullets bounced away, seemingly blocked by an invisible wall. Nat quickly turned, encircled her with his wings, and suddenly they were on a roof, and judging by the shouts, her roof.
"Ready?" Nat asked. Bending forward, Sara climbed on his back. After a moment, he jumped. Sara screamed as the ground rushed towards them, but calmed when they began gliding away. A voice screamed behind them.
"Sara! Come back!" her mother called futilely.
Suddenly a hailstorm of gun fire flew by them. The wall of the city loomed in the distance. A second later, it was behind them.
"How'd you do that?" Sara asked over the wind.
"I...I can teleport..." Nat said, seemingly exhausted.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes. It just tires me out." Nat replied. "I'll be fine."
The pair flew on. The initial thrill of flying had worn off and she began thinking of what she was giving up. Everything she cared about was at home. She trusted Nat to protect her, but where would they live. These questions eventually put her to sleep. Noticing this, and his own fatigue, Nat flew down to the forest below and landed in the fork of a tree, just large enough to make them hard to spot at night. He used the last of his psychic powers to lift Sara off his back. Laying back, he pulled her close and wrapped a wing around her, feeling strangely mentorish, despite the fact she raised him. Wondering if he made the right choice to bring her along, he fell into a fitful sleep.
