Story Notes:
Okay, so I got the idea for this story through a wave of depression. Depression has it's perks. Anyways, this story is in a flashback format, and I really, really hope I'm able to make this work. I'm pretty proud of it so far, and think I can do a lot to push it on.I'm mot going to put warnings, since none of the current chapters have sex or anything. I don't even know for sure if I'm going to add sex or not. If I do though, I'll be sure to add in the warnings later on. Thanks~
Chapter 1
The howls of several dog Pokémon could be heard all throughout the dense, snow filled forest. The sounds kept growing closer and closer to us, as my partner and I struggled on into the forest, trying to avoid the danger of what would happen to us if we were caught. The two of us could barely walk through the snow normally, let alone have to run from a pack of dog Pokémon. On top of that, the snow was coming down in a horrible blizzard; the wind's howls blending with those of the dogs that followed us.
"I don't think we're going to make it!" I screamed out, my eyes squinting through the thick snow, the bitter cold stinging my lungs horribly.
"D-don't say that! We're almost there! Just a little bit farther..." was the reply I got back from my partner, who was probably worse off than I was in this cold weather.
"B-but I can't run much further! My legs are giving out, and the dogs are quickly gaining on us!" I was hopeless, knowing that we wouldn't be able to get away from our doom.
"We've got to keep going! Please, don't give up on me now! We can't have come all this way, just to give up now!" My partner kept trying to encourage me, and I tried so hard to keep going on. The dogs' howls kept growing closer and closer, and escape was really starting to seem impossible. But, I tried to keep my mind on my partner's words... Just keep trudging on, don't stop, you're almost there...
But, due to all my efforts at keeping strong, I couldn't keep my legs from freezing up and giving out on me, locking up as my small body fell flat into the snow. I tried to get up, but couldn't, my muscles locked up on me and wouldn't move. I gave up, not just on trying to get up, but rather on everything. Everything was hopeless; the possibility of getting away from the pack of dogs that was chasing us was impossible at best. Us two, a rookie rescue team, trying to run away from every high ranking rescue team around the entire continent... There was just no way.
My partner, always so helpful and caring... he came back for me, yelling at me to get back up.
"C'mon! We need to go, now! You can't give up on me now! Did we come all this way, just so we could give in?!"
"There's no hope! My body is frozen and I can't move..." I was determined to stay... I tried to encourage him to go on without me, but he just wouldn't do it... I tried to plead all my heart out to him. "They're not after you, they're after me! If you go now, you can still be safe..."
As predicted, he didn't budge. "I'm not going anywhere without you! I'm staying with you till the bitter end!"
How ironic... Here it is; the bitter end. Or, the bitter cold end, I should say. I could hear the barks getting closer and closer, which means closer to my death... I started then, to think about what would happen if I were to die. I wouldn't have to suffer anymore... I wouldn't have to be running from the world, for something I didn't do. But, then I wouldn't ever be able to see my partner again. We would have no more happy memories, no more together. Nothing.
I heard the barks and howls. They couldn't be but maybe 100 yards away by now. I looked up, seeing my partner's face, covered with frozen tears, and started to cry myself, my tears doing the same and just freezing up into my fur. His frozen face was burned as an image into my sight, and I laid my head down one last time, just wishing none of this had ever happened. I just wanted to be alone with my partner in our base, away from the worries of the world. Smiling, laughing... Happy. I watched the image of his face, as I blacked out there in the snow...
My morning came like any other morning did. I woke up, sheepishly sitting up and rubbing my eyes with my paws. My kind usually didn't keep our eyes open anyways, but whatever. I stood up, stretching out my small limbs and walking from my bed of leaves over to a small pond that I lived near, looking at my reflection. There was nothing out of the ordinary about me; I was just an average Cyndaquil; nothing more, nothing less.
The small forest where I lived was right on the outskirts of Pokémon Town, the center of the island continent. There were a lot of Pokémon rescue teams that had their bases here, because of the Peliper Post office, and all the other convenient stores and what not around town.
I was fairly new to the area, and came here for the ability to go to town and pick up supplies when I needed it. Today, I was running out of berries, and the kind I liked weren't grown naturally in the forest, so I went to town so I could get some.
It was a short walk, about ten minutes, down a path I was starting to wear into the forest. The weather in this area was always summer like, so the trees were always green. I saw some other Pokémon, like Pidgeys and what not going about their own business.
When I did walk into town, I immediately walked by a small Pokémon Rescue Team base, which was decorated to suit a fire type. I kept on going, starting on to a paved stone road, when led into the heart of town.
The store, luckily, was on this side of the town, so I wouldn't have to walk too far to get supplies.
Finally, I came upon the store. It was more of a vendor's stall than a store, to be honest. At the desk, were two Kecleon; the Kecleon brothers. One of them was green, and the other was purple.
I walked up to the stall window, and was greeted cheerily by them. "Welcome to the Kecleon Brother's shop! How may we be of service?"
"Yes, I would like to purchase some Rawst berries, if I may please."
"Oh, we're sorry, but we sold all out of those today. Is there anything else we can get for you?"
I sighed, this having been the second day I missed the Rawst berries. "No, it's fine... " I walked from the stall, and towards the center of town to see if anything interesting was going on.
When I arrived in the center of town, I saw a lot of Pokémon, busy and talking to other Pokémon. This made me feel pretty lonely, since I didn't know anyone in this area at all. I didn't have any friends yet. Once again, I sighed, turning back around to walk back to my little clearing. As I turned around, though, I ran face first into a Totodile, and both of us fell over.
"Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to run into you, I promise!" I apologized over and over, not wanting to get some random Totodile angry at me.
"Oh, don't worry about it. I probably shouldn't have walked behind you like that! Are you okay?" He got up, and helped me up off the ground.
"Yeah, I'm fine... Thanks for helping me up." I thanked him, glad that he was nice, and not some mean, irascible Pokémon, like I tend to think everyone to be, for some reason. I have a tendency to not trust anyone.
After giving him a quick look over, I noticed he was carrying something."What's that in your hand?" I asked him, curious.
"Oh, this? It's an application to start a Pokémon Rescue team! I got it in the mail today, and really want to be in a team... The only problem is I don't have any members or a team name..."
"Oh, that's too bad." I just kind of gave a generic pity remark, wanting to go back to my clearing now.
"Hmm... You seem like a pretty capable Cyndaquil to me. Would you want to maybe join my team?!" His eyes lit up and he seemed pretty excited when he asked, like he knew I would say yes.
"W-what? Why me? I mean, I don't even know you... Also, I'm not much of a fighter, myself. I doubt I could prove to be very useful." I tried to weed myself out of this best I could. I'm not one for going out and doing stuff. I would prefer to just sit around all day and sleep, and maybe eat occasionally.
"C'mon! It'll be exciting! I bet we'll get to be really good friends once we hang around each other!" He seemed really determined to get me to join with his team. The more I thought about it, the more appealing it seemed. I mean, I just described myself as a lazy, do nothing all day type of Pokémon. Maybe this would be something different that I could think about.
"Hey, where do you live at?" I asked him.
"I live at the Pokémon Rescue base over that way." He pointed towards the direction of the base I usually pass on my way to get to town. How weird... A water type Pokémon living at a fire themed base.
"Okay, well, I'll get back to you on that offer if I feel like I want to go through with it."
"Great! I'll be at the base waiting for a reply! I really hope you accept my offer!" And with that, he ran off back to his base. What a hyperactive Pokémon, that Totodile. I wasn't even able to catch his name...
A couple of hours later, I was still hungry, but was pondering hard over the decision that I had in front of me. If I were to take the Totodile up on his offer, I'd be putting myself in a position of a lot of responsibility, which I really wasn't used to. Saving other Pokémon and stuff was demanding work. But on the other paw, if I didn't, I would probably be doing this same routine over and over again, every day until I died, and then rotted in the ground.
That didn't sound like fun.
So I headed back through my path, holding my stomach as it growled and moaned at me, wanting substance of some kind. I tried to ignore the hunger, and walked along the path to the Totodile's base.
Once I arrived at the door of his place, I gave a knock. Almost immediately, the door flung open and the Totodile was there to greet me. "You're here! I knew you'd take me up on my offer, I just knew it!"
"Yeah. It seemed like I have nothing else to do, so I'll go for it." I answered back.
"Great! We can fill out this form then right away, and get it to the Peliper Post office today then!" He seemed to have his heart really set on this. He might have been really loud and talkative, but he seemed to have a good heart to me.
"Sounds good to me!" Then, my stomach let out a loud growl, and I groaned out.
"You sound really hungry! Come in, and I'll get you something to eat!" He led me into the base, which was fairly big on the inside. It was nice and warm inside it, and hard a dark tone, with a fire built in the middle, and several beds lined around it.
"This is my humble abode! It has plenty of room, that I could house several Pokémon here!... the only problem is that I have no one here with me..."
"Well, that's changing now, isn't it? I guess I'll be staying here with you."
"I'm really excited! I bet we're going to make a really great team! So, what kind of berries would you like?"
"Do you have any... Rawst berries?" I doubted that he did, but I gave it a shot.
"I do, as a matter of fact! I don't like them myself, but always keep a store of them, just in case of a burn!" He dug inside a little hole in a large stone, which was apparently hollowed out for berry storage. He handed me a few of them, and I immediately started to chow down on them.
After I had finished eating, me and the Totodile got to talking. "So, Mr. Totodile. I never did catch your name." I said, wiping the last of some berry juice off my maw.
"My name is Blue. I've lived here in Pokémon Town for quite a while, now. I've always wanted to be in a Pokémon Rescue team, though, and recently just decided that I would try to start one. This was the only base available, so I took it up. It's not water themed, but it's still nice and cozy, I think."
"I agree. My name is Pali, and I've just moved around in this area not too long ago. I've lived next to a small pond a short walk away for the last few weeks. I've basically been following the same routine over and over every day since then. This is the first change I've made."
"I'm glad you decided to join up with me, then! I'm sure that we'll have a great time together. You seem like a really nice Pokémon!"
"As do you, Blue." I replied back. "So, should we fill out the form that you got, now?"
"Oh yeah! The form!" He pulled it out from behind him and looked at it. "So, the first thing we need is a team name."
"Uh, don't ask me. I'm horrible with naming anything."
"So am I. I've always thought what I would name a rescue team if I ever got one, but never came up with anything interesting."
"Hmm... " I thought it over, never thinking I'd ever be in a rescue team. "How about Team Haxors?" I asked, kind of sarcastically.
"Team Haxors... I like that!"
"Seriously? I was just kind of saying something random..."
Hmm. Team Haxors. It DID have a ring to it, I have to admit.
"Okay, so Team Haxors... members, Blue and Pali. Next, bandana color. Well, my favorite color is blue. How about you?
I had to giggle a bit. Blue's favorite color was blue. "Mine is blue, too. Well, there you go I guess."
"Okay then! It looked like we're done!" He folded up the form, and put it back in the envelope, then sealed it. "It's time for us to go to the Peliper Post office to mail this off! The sooner we do, the quicker we get our rescue badges!"
So us two headed off to the Peliper Post office. I come here every now and then, but I never get any mail. We walked up to the ledge that the post office set up atop, which was a gorgeous view of a valley, filled with trees, which led off into an infinity of everything. There were lots of mountains in the distance, and you could even see one part of the ocean. I always did love the view from up here.
We walked into the post office, and Blue laid the letter on the desk. "We'd like to send out our application for a Pokémon rescue team, please!"
The Peliper smiled at us. "So, a new rescue team, eh? We're always in need of new rescuers, thanks to the outbreak of natural disasters lately!"
"That's the main reason I wanted to start this team. I want to help all kinds of Pokémon out!"
"With an attitude like that, I bet you two will go really far." The Peliper took the letter to the mailing center, where it was flew to the main Rescue Team office to be accepted or denied.
We thanked the Peliper, and walked out of the building. "Well, I've waited for that moment for a long time, now! I can't believe we're actually going to be a rescue team together!"
I have to admit. I was pretty excited about this whole thing. Blue seemed like a really nice Pokémon and a good companion. Also, it'd be better than rotting in the ground, I thought!
"Hey, Blue. It's getting kind of late. I think we should Head back to the base now. "
"Yeah, I agree with you."
So we headed back towards the base. When we got back, I fueled the fire up for us, so that it would stay warm at night. We both bedded down for the night, taking two pads next to each other.
"I'm glad that you decided to join my team, Pali..." said Blue, who was on the verge of sleep already.
"Yeah, I am too. I bet that we'll make a really good team together..."
And with that, both of us fell asleep by the fire. I dreamed that night of heroic deeds and the rewards of being in a rescue team with Blue.Chapter End Notes:I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
