Chapter 2: Route 1
Chapter 2: Route 1
(10 Years Earlier)
It's been 1 year since I first moved to pallet town. My dad stayed back in Goldenrod. My mother has been getting along with a lot of the people, especially Prof. Oak. And apparently, we're living in the house of the famous Red.
"Kado, dinner will be ready soon." My mother announced. "And we're having a guest over."
"Who is it mother?"
"Prof. Oak."
Oak liked my mother a lot, and he had never met me yet.
Just then, a knock was heard from the door. "Oh." My mom said. "That must be him." She went over to the door and opened it.
"Hello Samuel, you seem to be early."
Oak looked inside the house. "I hope I'm not disturbing anything."
"Oh no, Samuel. You can come in, Dinner will be ready in about ten minutes."
Oak walked into the house and looked around. "Oh the memories. You have your house arranged and furnished almost exactly like when Red and his mother lived here."
"Coincidence." My mom replied.
Oak's eyes had met with mine and I couldn't think of saying anything."Hello there, you must be Kado. Such a small town and I haven't seen you for the year you have lived here."
"Good afternoon Prof. Oak. Make yourself comfortable in our home. Would you like something to drink."
"Yes please, water will do."
I left the room and got a glass of water. I never usually acted like this when it was just me and my mom, but for some reason whenever Prof. Oak showed up I always showed great respect.
I returned to the living room and handed the glass to Oak. He sipped at it a few times before talking to me again. "So well mannered you are." He took another sip. "Listen, your mother has told me that she wanted to get you a pokemon."
"Really?!"
"Yes, but you see. They can be really expensive, and she is no trainer so she can't go out and catch one."
"I know... We do not have much money to be going into things like that."
Oak finished off his drink and handed me the empty glass. "It took me a bit of work to get, since It's been a long while since I had a Pokemon battle." Oak then handed me a poke ball. "That poke ball contains a Charmander."
"Really?!" I was overwhelmed with joy. "Thank you so much!"
"You can keep her on two conditions. You take care of her VERY well, and you promise me not to become a trainer. You only keep that Charmander as a pet."
I stared at the poke ball and then at Oak. "But why can't I become a trainer."
"I have my reasons..." He replied.
"Dinner!" My mom called out. "It's all set on the table."
Prof. Oak stood up. "Before we get to dinner, Would you like to nickname your newly received Charmander?"
I let the Charmander out of the poke ball. She looked at me for a few seconds before looking at Oak. "Yes, I would. Her name is Miko." Miko then looked back at me.
"Very well!" Oak said. "You now own that Charmander and is now named Miko."
(Present Time)
I awoke to find that Miko wasn't in my arms anymore. I looked around and saw that she was not in the room. The sun was shining through the window and lit up my room. My blanket was in a bundled heap on the floor and my pants were still unzipped and opened.
After changing my clothes I went downstairs and was greeted by my mom with breakfast. "Good morning Kado, I hope you slept well, you were up at three in the morning."
"I know." I replied. "I couldn't sleep... Miko... Kept me up."
"Hum... Why didn't you put Miko in her poke ball."
"Oh... You know how she doesn't like it in there. Speaking of which, have you seen Miko?"
My mom thought for a moment. "Oh yes! Oak came by and took her. He said that he needed to do some tests before you go on the Gym Challenge. Why didn't you tell me you were going to go on the Gym Challenge?"
I packed my bag with some food and supplies. Clean Clothing, Water, etc. "I failed to remember. You... Came into my room and took Miko?"
"Oh no, not at all. She was awake and down here before you were."
A wave of relief flowed through me. If she saw the position I was in with Miko in my arms... Again, I don't know what would happen. "Oh, ok. I'll come here again before leaving so I can say goodbye and finish my breakfast."
My mom waved as I left out the door.
The only thing I could think of right now is what kind of tests Oak could be doing. As far as I know is that if you have strong Pokemon and a trainer card, you were eligible to take the Gym challenge, Which is another reason why the whole quiz thing Oak did yesterday was unnecessary.
When I arrived at the lab, Oak was alone at his desk with one poke ball sitting there. "Prof. Where is Miko?"
"Inside the poke ball."
"Aw c'mon! You know she doesn't like it in those things."
Oak looked at the poke ball. He touched the red side with the end of his fingers. "Remember Kado, ten years ago. I gave you Miko, and I said you could keep her on two conditions."
"Right, to take care of her 'VERY' well. And to not become a.... Oh...."
"Yes." He replied. We both stared at each other. "Don't get me wrong. You took care of her exceptionally well, she even shows promise of being very strong."
"Then why Prof. Why do you not want me to become a trainer."
Oak still stared at me. "Because, I don't want you to get hurt. I know you and your mother all too well."
"I'm taking a Gym challenge, not doing a motorcycle stunt in the desert ruins of Hoenn. What do you mean you don't want me to get hurt."
Oak looked away and started rolling the poke ball back and forth on the desk. "Three trainers. The first two Red and Green. Both of them started from me and had trouble with Team Rocket. The next one was Gold, he kind of had a start from me. He also got in bad trouble with Team Rocket." Oak stood up with the poke ball in his hand. "They still live today, but they could have got seriously hurt. Then there is two other trainers who got a start from my colleague Prof. Birch. They got in trouble with Team Aqua AND Team Magma."
"I can see where you are going with this." I interrupted. "I won't get into any trouble like that. I really need to do this, not just for the Gym Challenge. The only places I've ever seen my entire life is Goldenrod and Pallet Town." It seemed Oak wasn't listening, but I knew he was. "I need to see the world. I need to know what's out there. And no matter what kind of stupid quizzes or demoralization you put me through, I will do this. With or without you."
Oak looked at the floor, and all was silent until he looked back up at me. "I see. But you can't get anywhere without a trainer card." Oak was right. Without a trainer card, I couldn't challenge any Gym Leader.
Oak reached into his pocket and pulled out a red flat object no bigger than his hand. "That's why I had this printed out for you." He then tossed me the object. It was a trainer card, it had my picture and everything. "Wow... I don't know what to say. Ever since I first moved here, you've been doing nothing but helping me. Why?"
"Is that a complaint?"
"No! No, I just... Nevermind..."
Oak tossed me the poke ball and I let Miko out. She took one look at me and hugged my leg.
"Quite the bond you two have." Oak said to me.
"You don't know the half of it." I muttered under my breath.
"What was that?"
"Nothing... I've got to go."
After finishing up my breakfast, I grabbed my bag and hugged my mother and said goodbye. There was quite the distance between Pallet Town and Viridian City. This was known to people as Route 1.
Grass led from the entrance of Pallet town to a long row of small ledges that rose up to where I could only make out the silhouetted roof tops of Viridian. Miko was standing at my feet looking in the same direction as I was. "So... Miko..." She looked at me. "About last night... What was that?"
Miko stared at me for a moment before saying, "Char..." Well, that didn't come out as clear as I thought it would. So I sat down and decided to communicate with her the only way I knew how.
"Was it just some random act?" Miko shook her head no. "Was it just to... Well... Experiment?" Again it was a no. "So maybe... To get my reaction?" She shook her head no again. It was all I could think of. Nothing else came to mind. I sighed as Miko hugged my arm. Then it came to me, something that I thought wouldn't happen. "Is it because... You... Like me?" Miko stared at me for a moment before shaking her head yes. "Oh... I see... Well, a trainer and pokemon bond can't be like that... It just can't. We've known each other for ten years, this I am aware of. But when a bond like that happens, and I am forcing you to fight, emotions could get in the way." Miko was still staring at me. "That's the best I can explain it." Even I didn't understand it all too well. Out of all the ways I could of explained it, that was the only thing that came up, emotions. I didn't even mention how wrong it was, maybe deep down inside I felt the same way about Miko as she felt about me. But I knew that no one would understand it, and that it was wrong.
Miko looked away and then nodded to show she understood.
"C'mon." I said to Miko, "We have some Gym's to visit."
