Chapter 5: Pewter City (Vs Brock)

Chapter 5: Pewter City (Vs Brock)

Stan and I entered Pewter City. Not very many buildings could be seen. The famous Museum was dead ahead, the gym could be seen on the left, a Pokémon center on the right and to the right of that was an overgrown garden. "I'll go inform the police." Stan announced. "I don't want you getting involved. They're dangerous people."
"What about you?"
"What about me? I have a dept to repay." Stan then ran off to the east side of the city. At least I wasn't going to get involved.

I opened my Pokedex and looked up info on Brock. I didn't want to have an embarrassing moment again like at Green's gym.

Name: Brock
Occupation: Gym Leader
Badge: Boulder Badge
Pokémon: Rock Type

So he was indeed the first one to see, but it said he uses Rock Type Pokémon. A Charmander and a Pidgey wasn't going to do me any good against him. I thought for a moment and remembered from my studies that a rock type is weakened by grass and water types. But according to my Pokedex, none of those types were found in the area. So what the hell was I supposed to do?
Just then a scream could be heard from the overgrown garden. When I looked over, a rather young kid holding on to a Pikachu ran out. "Get away from me!"
He was being followed by a Rocket Member. "Get back here kid!" Me and Miko looked at each other, nodded then ran after the two. During the chase, we had to do dodge random civilians and their pet Pokémon until we came to a group of trees with a small skinny tree between two larger ones. The kid was small enough to fit between the tress but the rocket member was not. He stopped and examined the tree.
"Hey! You!" I yelled.
The Rocket member turned and looked at me for a moment before releasing a Pokémon. It was Nidoking. "I don't have time for you. Nidoking! Cut!" Out of fear I closed my eyes, but nothing happened. When I looked, the Rocket and his Nidoking were running and the skinny tree was gone, replaced by a stump.
Again we chased him but we ended up in a dark cave. According to my Pokedex, this place was called Diglett Cave. It led all the way to Vermillion City where the third Kanto Gym Badge could be acquired. I didn't want to end up there and I didn't want to get in trouble with team rocket anyways, so I turned around only to find that the red haired leader was behind me.
"And who might you be?"
I jumped back out of surprise. "I thought you went to Viridian City?!"
"You knew about that?!" We stared at each other for a moment. The commander then flicked back his hair and said, "I forgot something important here in Pewter. I came back to get it and saw you chasing one of my Grunts. Do you have a problem with my team?"
"Uh... Yes!" Of course I knew that now I was going to get in trouble with Team Rocket.
"Hum... And what might that be? Have we done anything wrong?"
"Well... Why would that Rocket be chasing that kid?"
"He was chasing a kid?"
"Don't play dumb! I also saw that needle one of your people used on that Metapod!"
The commander laughed. "Oh! So that's how you knew where I was going!" The commander took out a Poke ball and said, "You know too much!"
"Miko!"
"Cyndaquil!"

So this battle was going to be fire against fire. I knew fire attacks weren't going to do much, so I had to rely on Scratch. This was going to be a tricky battle.
"Cyndaquil! Use tackle!"
` "Miko! Watch out!"
Cyndaquil went to tackle Miko, but she roll dodged out of the way. "Why you! Cyndaquil, stop slacking!"
Here goes nothing I thought. "Miko! You can do this! Use Scratch." Miko stared down Cyndaquil before lunging for the attack. She hit Cyndaquil, and before the blood hit the ground, Cyndaquil had hit the wall of the cave.
"Agh! Cyndaquil! What's wrong with you! Go!!!"
I jumped in the air and yelled out, "YES! Critical hit!"
"Don't think you've won yet! Cyndaquil, return!" The commander flicked his hair again. "You can't with stand this with your precious little Charmander! Go Squirtle!"
I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. "Miko! You're going into your Poke ball for safety!" She nodded. "Miko, return! Go Pidgey!"
"Ahahahaha!" The commander went into an uncontrollable laugh. "You're going to take me on with that puny pocket sized bird!"
I showed no sign of weakness. "Take your best shot!"
"Fine! Let it be that way, you'll soon find out why people don't take me on! Squirtle, use Water Gun!" The Squirtle sprayed water from its mouth that hit Pidgey and caused it to slide to the back of the cave.
I ran back to Pidgey and helped him to his feet. "C'mon, I know this is your first trainer battle, but you can do better than this." We both ran back the commander. "Pidgey! Use Sand-Attack!" Pidgey flew above the ground and began flapping his wings. Sand from the ground lifted up and flew towards the commander and his Squirtle.
"Agh! I can't see!"
"Squirtle!!!"
"Good Pidgey! Now use Gust!" Pidgey flapped his wings harder, both the commander and Squirtle were taken off their feet and blow right out of the cave. "Pidgey, return."
I ran outside and found that the commander had returned his Squirtle. "This is impossible! How could you have beaten me, just like that! No one beats Silver! This won't be the last time you see me!" He then ran off and disappeared into the cave again.

Again, I heard the same scream and the kid came running out of the cave. I stuck my foot out and the Rocket Grunt was tripped, hitting his head off of a tree and getting knocked out. Blood trickled from his forehead and down his face.
"Ah... Thank you!" The kid said to me. "My name is Milo. Thank you so very much! He wanted to take my Pikachu."
"No problem."
"I have to repay you."
I waved my hands out in front of me. "No! Don't repay me, I'll feel bad!"
"I have to! I know, I'll give the Bulbasaur I just caught."
"Oh?! In that case! That would really help me with what I have planned!"
"Alright! Then it's settled!" Milo handed me a Poke ball with a black top and a yellow U. "Again, thanks. I have to go home and tell my mom what happened." Milo waved goodbye and ran off back towards Pewter City.
I looked at the ball containing Bulbasaur one more time before clipping it onto my belt.

The inside of the Pewter City Gym looked like a cave. At the very back up on a ledge was Brock. But he looked a lot older than in the Pokedex. He had a bit of grey running through his black hair. When I got closer I noticed he also had barely noticeable wrinkles on his face. "Who are you?" He said to me.
"My name is Kado, and I challenge you."
"Ah... It's been so long since I had a battle for my badge. I trust you have a Trainer Card."
I showed my trainer card to Brock. "Yep! Right here."
"Alright Kado, your challenge has been accepted." We both walked to the open part of the gym. White lines formed a battle area that you would see in Pokémon stadiums. "Let's get this started! Go Geodude!"
"Go Bulbasaur!" Brock smiled at me. "Hm! Nice choice, where did you get a Bulbasaur? They're so rare."
"Let's just say a gift. Enough babbling!"
"Aha! I like your style! Geodude, get him with a Rock Smash!"
"Bulbasaur! Counter with a vine whip!" Geodude grabbed a boulder from the ground and swung it towards Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur hit the boulder with Vine Whip causing it to shatter into pebbles that rained to the ground. "Wow! You're powerful! Razor Leaf!" A bunch of leaves seemingly popped out of nowhere and flew towards the Geodude cutting it up. The Geodude fell to the ground.
"Wow! I've never seen a one hit KO in a long time! You remind me a lot of Red!"
"You knew Red?! Whatever, get your next Pokémon out!"
"Hmf...! Onyx!" A large snake made of boulders came out of the poke ball. It was so tall that it almost touched the roof. "Use Wrap!"
"Bulbasaur! Look ou-"But it was too late, Bulbasaur had been wrapped up the Onyx's tail and was being squeezed repeatedly. "Agh! Dammit!"
"What now Kado? You can't use physical moves while in that position."
"Dammit! Bulbasaur, try using Vine Whip." Bulbasaur whipped Onyx causing it to bolt up in pain and hit the roof. Bits of wood and other materials rained down to the ground.
"Ah! Not again!" Brock yelled.
That's when I noticed the Bulb on the back of Bulbasaur glow. "Aha! Use Solar Beam!" Bulbasaur managed to get out of the Onyx's grip and aim its bulb towards Onyx. A beam of light shot out of the bulb and hit Onyx square in the face. It came tumbling down like a bag of 'rocks.'
Brock stood there with his mouth wide open. "Wow... You took out both my Pokémon with one. Not only that, the fight cost me my roof!" I was beginning to think that he was going to make me pay for the damages. "I've never had a fight like that since I met Red!!!"

After obtaining my prize and badge, me and Brock talked for a while outside of the gym. "Yes, yes. I knew Red. He was a good kid. I first met him when he was only small. He beat me, took his prize and left just like that."
"That doesn't sound like knowing him."
"Oh, but that wasn't the only time I saw him. He came back about a month later saying that he had become the Champion. At first I didn't believe him, but he showed me the certificate. I was so shocked that such a young kid could have become the Champion."
"I know, I've heard stories about him."
"But then something happened." Brock looked at the ground and moved dirt around with his foot. "I don't know what, he wouldn't tell me. As a matter of fact, he wouldn't say a word... to anyone... He just packed up and left. Went to Mt. Silver."
"Really? He just wouldn't say a word."
"No matter how much I pressed. Eventually, his mom gave up looking for him and moved to Hoenn. I didn't know where he was at the time. Until his location was reported by another trainer."
I looked up at the sky. "Gold right?"
"Ya. After that, he disappeared again and was never seen."
"Wow... I never heard anything about that in the stories. I thought he went to Mt. Silver just to keep training."
"He was the Champion, he didn't need to train anymore, and no one was able to beat him."
"WAS the Champion?"
"Oh... Well, since he disappeared, Lance took up being the Champion again for both Kanto AND Johto. Hoenn and Sinnoh both have different Champions."
I began to walk away. "Well, I really have to go now. It's getting late."
Brock waved to me. "It was nice chatting with you."

Ahead was Route 2, and then Cerulean City. Maybe I would be able to see the famous Nugget Bridge and even find out a little bit more about what happened to Red. This was beginning to be quite a weird mystery.
