Episode 045: A Friend in Need

Author Note: Story #2 for the month of July. Ironically, the closest one I've done so far on the female/female level. Hehe, enjoy :)

Forgotten Instincts
Episode 045
"A Friend in Need"
By Darfix

Kyotsu had noticed Litivia's tense, defensive stance and assumed one of his own. He puffs out a small sum of flames to warm up his fire breathing ability as he, his sister, and his lover prepare to ambush the approaching forms.

Silently, Darfix and Konya continue on their way forward in hopes of discovering the source of what they smelled. Hoping it was his friends, Darfix eagerly pushes himself forward, unaware of the trap he was about to step into.

For the two fire-breathers, the "slow-mo" effect had just kicked into high gear as the fur of the lead creature comes into sight just above some of the blades of the tall grass. At first, Kyotsu does not give it much thoughtâ"despite the fact the fur was of a tawny color. Litivia is the one to remove herself from red alert, but perhaps a little too late.

"Kyotsu," she whispers, "Hold your fire, I think itsâ""

A twig snaps in front of the Vulpixes as the figure steps out. Kyotsu was overwrought like a bull Tauros during mating season. Without even thinking, a sudden burst of Flamethrower sprays from his muzzle at the lead Pokémon!

Lucky for Darfix, he had his eyes forwardâ"despite the tempting female behind him. He sees the flames coming in time, turning him wide eyed and bushy tailed before he hits the deck as if he was being bombed from above! Konya, howeverâ"did not have those kinds of reflexes in her mildly-relaxed state. Before Darfix can shout, "Hold your fire!" and before Litivia can scold her boyfriend for having jumpy impulses, the young Eevee is singed on her ear tips before she too dives for the dirt!

"What the hell!? It is us! Darfix! Konya!" the male Eevee shouts before standing up. He had started to approach Kyotsu in a vexed manner when he hears a soft cry behind him, resulting in a quick one-eighty of his entire body as he bolts to Konya's side. With a gasp, he is quick to go to her aid, beginning with gentle licks on her ear tips, "Konya, are you alright?!" he asks frantically, noticing her fur didn't burn off on her ears, but it is charred a little.

"Iâ"I think so..." the little female replies promptly, shivering in the hold of her companion.

Litivia sighs heavily, "...Kyotsu didn't mean to, weâ"are just very uncertain with all of the thunder in the woods..."

Kyotsu exhales a large sum of oxygen in a very ashamed manner, his ears even wilting significantly as his position goes from battle-ready, to slouched in a few seconds, "...I never meant to hurt her, to be honestâ"I was aiming for you...Darfix..."

The male Eevee closes his eyes and takes a deep breath between comforting licks on Konya's ear tips, "...somehow, that doesn't bring too much comfort to me..." he retorts quickly, "...but I know you didn't mean to do this..."

Subaki by now had taken the liberty to approach Darfix and Konya from behind her sibling and his mate so that she might lend a paw in Konya's aid. It does not take long for her to assume a licking role on Konya's free ear.

The pain is still there, but Konya is now enjoying a light ear bathâ"which quickly seems to melt away the sting based on the blissful expression consuming her features.

"...the important thing is we are back together..." Litivia points out in an effort to divert attention from Kyotsu's blunder, "We will have an easier time finding everyone that is missing or lost..."

Seeing Konya is doing better, Darfix turns his gaze to the spoken vixen, "...we certainly got separated pretty badly when all that noise started...but to my understanding, most of us are still back in the dens. I think we're just missing Tiasha and Niktsu."

"...Mommy and daddy went out to look for you two..." Subaki speaks up, "They're out here somewhere; we're missing them too..."

Darfix nods, taking a seat on his hind section to give the scenario some thought, "...that leaves two pairs we need to find, I left Destiny and her kin back at their den, so they should be safe."

"...we better not waste much time, the sooner we find them, the less likely they are to fall into trouble." Litivia insists, putting her attention to Kyotsu, giving him a lick on the cheek to try to perk him up.

"You're right..." the male Eevee replies, turning to Konya again, "Do you think you can walk? You're more than welcome to take a ride on my back...Konya..."

The little canine regains her position on all fours, testing her muscles just a little before giving a confident nod, "Only my ears got damaged, silly...and not too badly, either," she responds with a cute smile no one could resist.

Darfix blushes just a little at her choice of words, "Well, goodâ"just making sure everything is functioning properly..."

"Great!" Litivia barks quickly, "Now let's get a move onâ"we best find our friends before sundown!"

With that being said, communication was knocked to a stand-still, as the five companions rally themselves and proceed through the forest in search of friends, family, and other friendly survivors...

Meanwhile, back at the poacher's shack, Destiny was beginning to come to, finally recovering from the passing out she did earlier in front of the Houndoom.

Her eye lids begin to flutter, as her body stretches just a little. She can feel something cold and hard bump against her fore paws when she stretches, which throws her into an immediately surprised state. Her eyes shoot open and she is forced into a fright when she discovers where she is exactly!

"Whaâ"where am I?!" she immediately asks to no one in particular, "Thisâ"this isn't my home!" she shouts in panic, beginning to pace around her small cage, chewing on the bars containing her.

Straight away, her behavior catches the attention of some of the other prisoners, who begin to show signs of mixed feelings for her panic.

A Raichu in a cage across from her begins to grumble softly, sparks discharging from his cheeks, "Quiet! You think you're the only one who doesn't want to be here?!"

Destiny turns her teary eyes towards the Raichu briefly, before another voice grabs her attention.

"Heh, you're a foxy little thingâ"who's your daddy, sweet heart?" questions a Manectric in one of the larger cages on the bottom of the stacked cages.

"Hey, hey! Leave her alone!" pleads the young Poochyena who was caged next to Destiny.

Destiny turns her gaze towards the Poochyena, small streams of moisture trickling down her cheeks now. The Vulpix cannot bring herself to say a word.

"...its okay..." the Poochyena insists, sticking part of her nose between the bars, "I will be here for youâ"we can help each other through this..."

Destiny seems diffident but knows she'd be foolish to turn down her only offer for an alliance. She shakily brings herself to the edge of her cage, lying down slowly and lightly poking her nose through her cage in the Poochyena's direction.

The cold noses of the two girls touch, resulting in a gentle smile on the Poochyena's end, "...my name is Skylia, what can I call you?" she asks in a friendly manner.

Destiny pauses for a brief moment, just now noticing the unique qualities of this Poochyena. It almost looks as though she is of some importance in her tribeâ"wherever that might be. There is a teal colored paw print on her right hip, likely placed there by another of her kind from the dye properties of a special berry. On top of that, her tail had two little vine ties in it, resulting in the fur on her tail being split in three sections. It was strange at first, but held a high level of style.

"Miss?" Skylia asks the Vulpix who seemed to be dazing off in thought over the Poochyena's appearance.

"Iâ"I'm sorry, you can call me...Sariku, or...Destiny...I don't really care either way..." she admits, her voice resembling that of a Rattata begging for mercy from a hungry Persian.

"Destiny is kind of a funny name..." the Poochyena responds with a cute little giggle, "But I like it...it's nice to meet you, Destiny," she responds positively, lightly rubbing her wet nose against Destiny's.

Though the affection was a little new to Destinyâ"that being sharing such with a stranger, as well as another female, she does not seem to mind, considering the situation. If she had to be a little overfriendly herself to keep this allegiance, it definitely seemed worth it. Besides, who knew how long the Poochyena was "stationed" here. Perhaps physical contact was so rare that it didn't matter who it was shared with?

Destiny's ears flick a little at the sound of Skylia's nose testing her.

"You've got a mate...an Eevee?" the canine questions her new friend, looking into the eyes of the Vulpix while still nose to nose with her.

Destiny clears her throat nervously, foxes always had a hard time dealing with dogs. The nose of any dog was to be feared by anything that relied heavily on stealth to survive. Before long, she is able to answer the Poochyena's question with a simple, "...yeah..."

Skylia smiles a little, giving a nod, "I was actually coming of age where I was to be assigned a mate back at my tribe...that was before these humans found and captured me..."

Upon even closer inspection, Destiny does note that this Poochyena is probably just barely of ageâ"her first heat would be just around the corner, for sure. Maybe a few weeks, or a month depending on her body. "Assigned a mate?" Destiny asks, frowning a little, "It's much more, well, free-feeling to choose your own mate..."

Skylia's gaze drifts to the side, but she keeps her nose at Destiny's, "We do not do that in our tribeâ"we are chosen based onâ"our strengths and weaknesses. The elders decide who is fit for whoâ"that's how it's worked since forever, I think..."

Destiny has to lightly smile at the innocence of this young female, "Iâ"don't mean to be rude, butâ"what is with the paw print on your hip? Your tailâ"it is very pretty, like that...what's the purpose?" she asks, deciding to really take a chance on getting to know her new friend.

Skylia's look turns back to her Vulpix partner resulting in a light smile at her curiosity. "Well, um...it is kind of embarrassing, Iâ"don't know if I should say. But, I do trust you...the paw print signifies that I am the daughter of the tribe's chieftain. It is the paw print of another Poochyena who he chose was worthy enough to mark me. It's moreâ"symbolic than anything. The tail, wellâ"that's just for flair," she replies with a light blush, "Its boring looking just like everyone else, right?"

Destiny cannot help but smile again, nudging her nose a little more against Skylia's, "Fair enough, I really do like it...and that paw print, it is very pretty too..."

Skylia's tail begins to wag at a casual pace in observable illustration that she had indeed enjoyed the compliments, "Ohâ"but you Vulpixes have such beautiful furâ"your tails are cause for envy too. I wish I could have some of your look," she responds in admittance.

Destiny offers another warm smile, accompanied by the resurrecting despair of remembering one was in prison. Her smile fades and a sigh escapes her lungs. She misses Darfix and worries greatly she might never see him again. What if she were to have their kits in this blasted cage? Would he ever get to see his own kits? Would they ever get to see their father? These thoughts flood her mind like a flock of Wingull on the dropped French fry of a trainer passing through.

Skylia quickly takes notice of this, growing concerned as well as she too is reminded of where she is. Would her father come rescue her? What was to be her fate? Would she die here with her only friend being someone she couldn't even touch? Her will and desire to escape had been doubled now that she has someone besides herself to worry about. She would free her friend if it killed her...
