Arguably, it's Sega and Sony that brought about 'hardcore gaming' to North America. What with the advertising campaigns for the Mega Drive and Playstation respectively, that were aimed firmly at the 18-35 year old white male demographic.

I would have to disagree. Sega ALWAYS had the same demographic as Nintendo, and so did Sony at first (pre-PS2). They all started with the purest of intentions (asides from Sony purposely setting out to steal Nintendo's thunder). I've never seen such pandering to "western" gaming (rehashed war-themed FPSes and car games) until Microsoft entered the game and started reinforcing a new stereotype for a gamer. Sony copied this model because they copy everything they see instead of coming up with their own ideas, forming the "hardcore" duopoly of gaming you see today. Nintendo at least stuck to their guns and remember what they are about.

I recall a few North American and British advertisements being quite aggressive.

Those ads are why they failed. A dick joke is only funny ONCE.

Untrue.  Some dicks get a laugh every time they're loosed.
