I feel like Nintendo does have a chance. And honesty I feel the Bashing of the Wii U has been so Ridiculous it's insane.
I'll admit there's somethings I wish they'd get better on but I think if anything most of the rest of the competition is more or less jealous in a way.
[move].....But that's just my thoughts.....[/move]
Nintendo isn't going anywhere, no matter what anyone says, they're not like the other two. They're a juggernaut in this business, and video games is all they do in markets outside Japan, while Sony and MS have to juggle entire technology empires, and Sony especially is haemorrhaging money.
Nintendo unfortunately do fall behind regarding the power of their consoles, but only because power is not their focus. Their focus is fun games, although they do spend more time in development then I'd like...
In my honest opinion, the bashing of Nintendo in general, let alone the Wii U, stems from the current generation of gamers not understanding, or ignoring, the roots of gaming. The same thing would be happening to SEGA if they still made consoles today. Sony and MS have both reinforced an alternate image of what a gamer is and what a good game is, playing on Nintendo's family friendly image, and now western gamers in general now see shooters and other brutally violent types of games as the ideal genre, deeming most others inferior or kiddy.
Nintendo will be fine. The only thing wrong with the Wii U (beside being $50 cheaper than the PS4) is just the lack of games for it. Right now there is nothing for it so it isn't leaving stores atm. It is showing growth in Japan thanks to Pikmin 3 and should see a bigger boost in sales come this holiday.

Nintendo really should work on getting its thumb out of its ass and put out a few more enticing games. They don't have to be big time titles that all the consoles get, nor do they have to be mind-blowing graphic storms or epic tales of mass proportions. Just something to give fans and non-fans alike something worth staring at in the game case. As it is there are at best five to seven games that are worth considering, and a few of those are multiports with small bonuses to make them worth considering the system. This isn't enough.
Now, not to join the Nintendo bashers, but they are not doing very much to sell their console. As it is the other two have a sizable library of appealing titles for all ages and gamer habits, while the Wii and WiiU both have relatively small libraries to their respective names (keeping in mind that the glory days of the gamecube are compatible, and the virtual console is thriving with many classics being given new life... which isn't a great selling point tbh), not to mention the unfriendly interface for new users.
In a way they should focus on the handheld market, something they've dominated since the gameboy/gamegear days. The 3ds is portable, the 3d addition adds a fun layer to gaming (at the cost of a shorter battery life... first time for everything, right?), and has more games than the Wii does in terms of appeal. Having a big home console is nice, and it has its place, but really... Nintendo is trying too hard to be innovative for its own good. Sometimes taking smaller steps rather than leapfrogging ahead of the pack at the gun is better. Then again, we still have to wait a few more months before the other companies bring out their new consoles, so maybe being first on the market and having time to work out kinks and build a library will pay off?

Everything I've heard about the Wii u from people who actually own one has been positive and its apparently really fun. Once they release a must have game for the console, the sales should probably pick up regardless of its processing power.
I plan to get one but not yet. That is the case with almost everyone I know.
The online looks sub-par but I suppose that is what we have the other consoles for.
Ditto. Although I do know quite a few people who also have a Wii U specifically for games released fairly recently, like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Resident Evil Revelations.
Edited for Clarification: Removed "I plan to get one but not yet." from Quote. I DO have a Wii U, got one on launch day.

The online isn't bad compared to previous gen consoles from Nintendo. They've definitely stepped it up. 3DS has friend codes, but you only have one to use across all your games (as opposed to the DS and Wii having one friend code per game), and the Wii U completely doing away with friend codes in favor of Nintendo Network IDs, which work the same as an XBOX Live Gamertag or PSN Account.
As a user of this service, I can tell you it's a lot better now. It still seems to get a lot of crap from people who haven't tried it and still assume it's bad because it's Nintendo.
Nintendo Network is also the only completely free online service for consoles for the eighth generation, with Sony announcing that PS4 will require a Playstation Plus subscription to play games online, much like XBOX Live Gold. Afaik, PS3 is still free to play online though.
Since I'm more a PC / Handheld gamer, I don't really have the right to speak about consoles, but my 2 cents:
Comparing the Wii U with the XBox 1 and PS4 from a technically view, I give the thrumb card to the Wii U. The hardware may be a little bit outdated, but it's more (foolproof) interactive due it's touchscreen.
From the other hand, when you buy a XBox 1 or PS4, you're actually buying an AMD's APU-powered desktop. Thus just like Apple, you're paying for the emblem and the design of the case and GUI of the operating system, but not for an unique 'WOGHOGHOOW!'-feature.
Sidenote: Porting from PC to XBox 360 / PS3 / Wii (if happened) and vice versa is understandably hard, since the latter 3 used a different CPU design ( Power architecture with RISC design) compared with the PC ( x86 architecture with CISC design ). However, because the cpu architecture of the XBox 1 and PS4 is now the same as the desktop (Wii U still includes a Power-CPU), game studio's can't get away with "Meh porting is so hard because different CPU and GPU".

I had been planning on getting the Wii U one Nintendo releases Pikmin 3. Now the game's release is right around the corner, and I don't really care as much anymore. I still love Pikmin, and I really want to play the game, but it's hard for me to justify dropping $300 + tax to get one game (I'd get the white Wii U, not interested in the extra shit that comes with the black one). I was also really excited for Wind Waker HD, but after hearing that they aren't including the dungeons that were allegedly cut from the original game, I'm left less interested in the game. Earthbound looks really good, and I'd like to play that too, but I'd rather play it on a 3DS.
Besides Pikmin 3, Nintendo doesn't have many games currently out that make me want to pick up the system. It really doesn't help that they've been in a horrible drought of top quality games for the last 6 months. However, that is a problem hat many consoles experience around launch. It also doesn't help that many of their third party support has been dropped, though that doesn't really matter for me because I'm primarily a PC gamer.
Regarding Pikmin 3 (again), I got to demo the game at Comic Con recently, and while I don't think a vertical slice of a game is a good representation of the final product, I still enjoyed my time playing it... with one exception. They had me use the Wiimote and Nunchuck, which I wasn't use to all. (Side note: If you ahven't heard already, Gamepad and Game Pro controllers are also supported.) It was easier to aim and be more precise, but dismissing Pikmin (pressing X in 1 and 2) required shaking the Nunchuck, which I didn't like, but I could get over it.My biggest gripe was that there wasn't a way to control Pikmin via some sort of C-Stick control as was present in 1 and 2. I liked being able to orgainize or send Pikmin to do some action with holding the direction, or moving the C-stick, but it looks like they removed that function. It's kinda hard to explain, but if you've played 1 or 2 you'll know what I'm talking about.
Negative Nancy aside, I know to never count Nintendo out. The 3DS struggled after its launch, and now the handheld is popular (holy shit I spot passed so many times at Comic Con I had no idea). Wouldn't surprise me if the Wii U saw a similar trend. nintendo just needs to come out with some system sellers. Pikmin 3 alone isn't going to do it and Smash Bros is a long ways away. I'll likely get a Wii U eventually, but not now, unless someone surprises me with one for a birthday or Christmas gift, but I doubt that will happen because I haven't hinted to anyone irl that I wanted one. I'll do like I did with the 3DS, and wait for a price drop. Right now $199 is the price point for me.
Every console this generation has a flaw. Every corporations aim has become distorted and makes gamers way to competitive and troll-like... Back when the Playstation first came out there were quite a few games worth playing on both consoles, some less family friendly than others, some now classics thought of as gold standards.
What happened to that time?
Well, I like to think that Microsoft happened to that time, coming out with a huge console that boasted massive hardware, hardcore games, and very few family-friendly games. This was a huge success that may have ruined games as they are now.
They introduced tons of shooters, more arose and eventually it became the CoD ruled hell we live in now. I'm not saying FPSs are not good, I'm just saying when they are ruled by blood and violence, it comes into question whether games are going to die off.
What the goals of console creators were back when it started:
To create video entertainment for the home.
The goals now are divided, and it is obvious that there is a huge difference:
Microsoft: To create the all-in-one device that the home console "should" be, and make money doing it. This should not be the aim of a console creator, especially after how they got slammed for their DRM and how their presentation focused little on the games.
Sony:
I am not sure, but I am fairly certain they are trying to beat down the competition every way they can. They have had a beef with Nintendo from the beginning and will continue to find ways to beat down both of the other two (the touchpad on the controller for the PS4 was a way of saying "we can do that too" and the low price and lack of DRM became "suck it Microsoft")
Nintendo: Make fun games, and innovate the console. Despite what was said about the XBox being the best, PS3 sucking and blah blah blah, their console sold twice that of the PS3 and XBox, (which basically sold the exact same), with their DS handheld nearly tripling that, which many say is a message ALL GAMERS should get, shooters and graphics do not matter. DS and Wii sold so many just on the basis of the few games and the family friendly games on them.
In reality, the best example of a game that people should base all game quality off of is Minecraft. Minecraft has sold nearly billions of copys worldwide (it might actually be billions), and guess what? it looks like shit dropped out of the sky and splattered all over the landscape. But I play it, I play it because there is no goal. No confinements to say "Okay, now go do this because you have to" there is no tutorial, there is no story, and there is no saying that there is an official end. Millions of people out there are making mods, making texture packs, making maps, all because they enjoy playing the game. How many trolls are there for Minecraft? I have not seen many. How many trolls are there for CoD and Halo? Numerous.
So what does all of that information I just dropped on your head mean? Absolutely nothing, unless you compare it to games you play every day. Look at Call of Duty, look at Halo, look at Gears of war, look at just about any game. Minecraft is the one that has outsold just about every one of those (except Mario and Pokemon, most likely) and continues to have hype.
When did it become the gamers goal to blow someones head off without any reason? Wasn't it once just to get to the end of a level without any reason why? I know there are the "oh, but they are the blabbady blahs" but what does that mean? Why do we need to have such violence in every game we play. Mario is violent yeah, but he's more in a silly nonsensical way.
Now, I have one more comment that actually relates to this thread. Yes, Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda have been the center of Nintendo's focus lately, but why is that? I do not have the answer, but maybe it's the fact that they feel insecure with what has been going on with Microsoft and Sony, they feel that something could go wrong at any moment and all hell will break loose on the gaming industry, so they feel they have to rely on their biggest sellers, and it is working. In reality, they need to make more Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine style games if they want to get their attention back, but that is not going to happen. The best thing they can do is sell what they can, Nintendo is in the corner because they were behind when PS1 came out with a disk reading system, ever since then they have been slammed for having out-of-date hardware, and things just keep getting worse for them, especially because all of these game companies were saying that the PS3 and XBox were out-of-date and they are needing an upgrade to get better graphics, making the Wii U even harder to get games onto because of the fact that companies want to have these insane graphics that don't matter.

I do agree that Microsoft introduced "hardcore gaming" outside of the PC with the XBOX, and they are the scum of the earth because of it, they have tarnished the image of gamers everywhere. That's what happens when an american company muscles in on a previously japanese dominated industry. The cultural differences between them was bound to create a shift.
Arguably, it's Sega and Sony that brought about 'hardcore gaming' to North America. What with the advertising campaigns for the Mega Drive and Playstation respectively, that were aimed firmly at the 18-35 year old white male demographic.
