Chapter 2-Return to Lavender

By the time we reached Lavender Town, I had thought up some kind of idea we could try. We were just going to try saying she was trying out a costume for an upcoming party. It had to be the lamest thought I ever came up with, but so long as nobody stopped to ask a bunch of questions about where she got it, we should have been fine. I wasn't too pleased about being here, but things could have been worse. Still no sign of any ghost Pokemon and that guy in the Gengar outfit didn't seem to be around either.

The Eevee-girl never let go of my hand the whole trip here. With the way she kept so close, it was hard to walk without tripping over her. We eventually stumbled into Lavender's police station, only to be met with an irritated glare from a familiar looking green-haired lady at the front desk. "Excuse me," she huffed. "Your friend will have to wait outside. We have a rule about people in costumes coming in here ever since that man dressed as a Gengar tried to steal the station's office supplies."

Well, at least I knew that guy wasn't picking on just me now. But this lady looked way too familiar... "...Officer Jenny? What're you doing here?"

"Excuse me?" Jenny arched an eyebrow, that annoyed look still on her face. "I work here! And I don't think I've met you before."

"What do you mean? You were just in Cerulean City a few weeks ago!"

"Cerulean City? Oh, you must have met my cousin then. But about your friend..." She looked directly at the Eevee-girl now, pointing towards the door with a pencil she was using to fill out some papers on her desk.

"Huh?" It took me a while to remember the plan about the Eevee-girl being in a costume. When I did, I laughed awkwardly and tugged lightly on her ears. I had to make some kind of excuse to let her stay inside. She seemed so clingy towards me that I didn't know how she's react if I left her alone. "Oh yeah, her costume! We have bit of a problem with that-the zipper's stuck. So can't really open it to hide something inside. I promise she won't be any trouble."

The girl whimpered a little when I tugged too hard on her ears. I let go and gave her an apologetic glance while Officer Jenny stared us both down. After a while, she sighed heavily and started doing some paperwork. "Very well. What do you need? We're really busy dealing with a recent crime spree, so we don't have time to deal with soliciting."

I started wondering if Team Rocket had anything to do with that as well, but didn't think about it too long. It didn't really concern the girl or me so I just explained what I saw on the road so we could be on our way, leaving out the stuff about her. I didn't know how the police would take it. It never really got around to that though. The moment I mentioned where I saw Team Rocket, cops were stampeding out of the station. I never saw anybody flip over a desk and land right in front of the door that was ten yards away before; Officer Jenny herself was probably the most interesting thing about Lavender Town I'd seen now. Within a few seconds, I could hear the sirens on squad cars and motorcycles blaring as they sped off towards the highway. Wow, I thought. They must've done something REALLY bad to get a reaction like that from the police...

I turned to check on the Eevee-girl, who was cowering behind me from all the noise of the people that went by. There were a few officers that remained at the station, and one of them wasn't as lenient as Jenny was with the costume law. We were both ushered out the door pretty quickly.

The next thing I wanted to do was to head for the Pokemon Center and see if there was anything wrong with her. We needed to get those shackles off too. They looked a bit tight on her wrists. It wasn't too far from where we were now and there didn't seem to be any people on the street at the moment so we should have been able to get there without any problems. About halfway there though, a large shadow suddenly moved out in front of us. I could feel the girl trembling a little as she hid behind me and let out a small whimper. I grumbled a little as I looked up at the Pokemon, knowing that it had to be that guy in the costume again. "Relax," I told her reassuringly. "It's just a man in a suit. See?"

I reached out quickly for the shadow, planning to rip the head off and toss it across the street so the man would have to run off to go get it. I wasn't going to give him the chance to swipe my wallet again. My eyes went wide when rather than catching anything, my hand went right through it. I went off balance for a moment and blinked when I looked back up at the shadow, which was waving a finger and tauntingly saying, "Gengar, Gengar." This wasn't a costume! It was a real Pokemon!

I don't why, but the moment I had looked up at its face, I felt stiff as a board. The Gengar grinned as it stared at me, the taunting motion of its finger turning into a slow, hypnotic hand gesture. I found myself unable to look away as it slowly lulled me off to sleep. The last thing I could remember before hitting the ground with a soft thud was the Eevee-girl's frightened cries before she was silenced...
