Trust
Hi again, friend. Glad to see you'd like to hear more. Now, where was I...
A few days passed since being found by an angry Drew. I woke up that morning, my side no longer in pain and my nose feeling back to normal. Peter unwrapped the bandages from my body. I stood up and stretched out a bit. Laying down for a couple days has a tendency to cramp up your muscles.
After breakfast that morning, I decided to head outside. Peter grabbed me by the tail and pulled me back in.
"What are you doing?" I snarled at him.
"Stay here for a moment," he said firmly.
"Why should I?"
"Listen to him, Delta," Greg said from the other side of the cave. "He knows what he's doing."
Peter cautiously crept out of the den, looking around in all directions. "OK, it's clear. Delta, I suggest you don't go alone. Drew's been kind of aggressive lately."
"What's his problem now?" Ryan asked.
"Apparently a human came to retrieve a Pokemon, one of Drew's closest friends, and he's not happy about it. He's been taking it out on anyone and anything he comes across," Greg explained. "If you really want to go out there Delta, I'll go with you."
Now, knowing that Greg has done nothing to hurt me so far, I still didn't quite trust him. I looked over at him, and unhappily accepted his offer. As we left the den, we heard a loud cracking noise in the distance. I turned my head in the direction of the sound, and saw a tree falling over, with Drew standing on the other side of it. I'd never seen anyone that angry before in my life. Crossing him now would mean almost certain death. Trying to get out of sight of him, Greg and I walked down the hill we were standing on away from him. I could tell something was bothering Greg.
"Is something wrong?" I asked him curiously.
"Hmm? I was wondering, why don't you trust me? I've done nothing wrong to you, I haven't hurt you, lied to you, or harmed you in any other way," he replied.
I hung my head. "I know you haven't."
"Is it because of what I am that you don't trust me?"
I didn't answer. The truth was, yes, that was exactly why. Greg let out a sigh. He perked up his ears, the same cracking sound from before rang out again. The ground shook beneath us, and I turned around to see a tree fall a few yards from us.
Looking up, I saw Drew standing over the fallen tree. He looked over at us, and I could see a fire in his eyes. He started to walk towards us. I panicked as he came closer, remembering the last time he was this close. Greg stood over me and looked up at Drew.
"Turn around, Drew," he warned. "I'm not in the mood to deal with you."
"In the mood or not, I don't care," Drew said, getting ready to fight.
"Delta, run back to the den," Greg commanded. I stood where I was, not moving for fear that Drew would chase after me.
"Delta, go!" Greg yelled. I didn't move a muscle, just stared into Greg's fierce eyes.
"Enough!" Drew hollered. He charged for us. Greg wasted no time in pushing me out of the way, and dove aside to avoid Drew. Turning on the spot, he let out an intense flamethrower. Drew took the full force of the attack, barely fazing him. He grabbed a nearby rock, easily twice my size, and hurled it at Greg, who quickly dodged out of the way. Releasing another flamethrower, he began to charge at Drew. Drew, having just recovered from the fiery blast, didn't see Greg dive at him, and fell over with the force of the blow. Scrambling to get back up, Drew grabbed another large stone. However, instead of hurling it at Greg, I was its target. Greg noticed this and disengaged from his battle, running full tilt to get to me before the rock. He dove and grabbed me as he jumped, the stone just missing both of us.
"You OK?" he asked me as he stood back up.
"I'm fine," I replied, still a bit dazed.
"Stay here."
He turned around, and without hesitation leapt at Drew. "You coward!" he yelled as he flew through the air. Drew caught him and held him by his neck, the same way he had done to me a few days before. Greg opened his mouth and let loose a fire blast. Drew dropped him before falling over, exhausted from the fight.
"Drew, I want you to leave us alone. Don't let me catch you bothering Delta, Peter, or Ryan again, you hear me?" Greg shouted at him. He turned around and walked over to me.
"You sure you're alright?" he said, looking me over.
"I'm fine," I repeated. He picked me up, placing me on his back, and padded back to the den. When we arrived, Peter was standing over Ryan, carefully taking the bandages off his body. Ryan saw us and greeted us as Greg walked in. I hopped off of his back and sat down in the corner of the dark cave.
"Greg, what happened?" Peter asked worriedly.
"Huh? Oh, we ran into Drew. I had to fight him off," Greg answered.
"Are you alright?"
"I'm OK. He couldn't handle me," Greg bragged. "Shame he wasn't more of a challenge. He shouldn't be bothering us again anytime soon."
"Well, it's about time someone put him in his place," Ryan stated.
"Anyways, why don't you get some rest," Peter suggested.
Greg, tired from his fight with Drew, staggered over to the corner he usually resided in and slumped down onto the stone
floor. He lay there for a moment, staring at me, before closing his eyes and falling asleep. Peter walked over to me.
"You alright, Delta?" he asked me, examining me to see if I was hurt.
"I'm fine, Peter. Greg was there to watch out for me."
"Well, I see you have a new attitude towards him. I'm glad you're through being afraid of him." I nodded in response. "Why don't you get some rest too? You look a bit tired."
I laid down, but didn't go to sleep. I had a lot of things running through my mind, but one really stood out. Greg had
saved my life. I knew then that what they've all been telling me, that not all of a species are the same, was true. I felt bad about how I'd treated Greg. He was willing to risk his life for mine, despite my attitude towards him. I lay there, staring at Greg's sleeping form. I slowly closed my eyes.
I awoke a few hours later, it was late afternoon. I noticed that only Greg and I were in the cave. I looked over to see
Greg was still sleeping, so I thought it best to leave him alone. I peeked out of the den, trying to find Peter or Ryan. Neither of them was in sight. I stood there for a moment, wondering if I should leave Greg alone in the cave. While I was thinking, I saw Ryan come into view over a hill, followed closely by Peter. They came into the cave and sat down.
"Hey Delta, how'd you sleep?" Ryan asked me.
"Alright, I guess," I responded. "Where were you guys?"
"We went up to the house on the other side of the daycare. A human showed up about an hour ago to pick up a friend of ours, so we went to say goodbye," Peter said.
"The guy that runs this daycare mentioned to her that he saw an abandoned Eevee here a few days ago. When she heard that, she wanted to know where he was and that she'd take him in," Ryan told me.
"Um...do you know who that Eevee is?" I asked nervously. I had just met these guys, I didn't want to leave them.
"We have an idea," Peter replied. He noticed that I looked a bit fearful when he said that. "It's you, isn't it? Don't worry, we won't make you leave if you don't want to. It's your life, and you should make that choice."
I sighed in relief, thankful that they wouldn't just throw me out, and with a human no less. Despite my finding out not all of a species were the same, I still had a bit of a fear for humans.
"Thanks, Peter. I don't want to leave you guys. I'm just starting to like it here," I said.
"And we're just starting to like you," he chuckled.
Greg was waken up by the voices. "What's going on?" he asked sleepily, raising his head.
"Sorry Greg, didn't mean to wake you," Peter said apologetically.
Greg yawned. "Don't worry about it."
"There's a human up at the house looking for Delta," Ryan explained.
"WHAT!? Why would a human be after him?" Greg roared.
"Hey, hey, hey! Greg, cool it. We're not gonna let them take him."
Greg sighed. "Sorry. You know how I get about humans since my old trainer."
"Yeah, we know," Ryan added.
"So what are we going to do about this human problem?"
"Well, the daycare owner doesn't know he's here, so I think if we just lay low, it'll be over shortly," Peter said.
I heard something outside the cave, and turned to investigate. I poked my head out and scanned the area for any sign of what made the sound.
"There he is," I heard.
I quickly turned to see the same human I saw a few days ago, looking at me. He knelt down, motioning for me to go to him. I backed into the den, hoping he would leave me alone.
"He seems a little shy," said another voice. This one I could tell was female.
"Delta, what's going on?" Greg asked me.
"The humans are here," I told him.
"Maybe he'll come out for some food," I could hear outside. I looked out of the mouth of the cave and saw a hand place a few berries on the ground about a yard out. There was no way I'd fall for that.
"He might not be hungry," said the female voice. Staring out the mouth of the den, I saw a human walk in front of it,
bending down to look inside. She noticed me sitting there, scared out of my wits. "I don't think he wants to come out. He looks terrified."
"Can you blame him? I don't think he has a family, I found him alone the other day," said the first voice.
"It looks like he found one here," said the girl. "I can see two others in here."
"Really?"
I saw the other human come to the mouth of the cave, peering in. "Well, I'll be. This's where you two have been staying," he said when he saw Peter and Ryan, who nervously acknowledged him. "Well, at least I know that little guy's being taken care of."
"Well, seeing that he has a home, I suppose I can let him be. I don't think he wants to leave anytime soon."
I watched as the two walked away from the cave. I turned around, noticing that Greg was out of sight.
"Where's Greg?" I asked.
"Over here," I heard to my left. Greg slowly stepped out from the darkness. "Are they gone?"
I nodded to him, and he let out a relieved sigh. "I was getting a bit worried for a moment."
The rest of the day passed by uneventfully. Night fell, and Peter and Ryan were asleep in a corner of the cold cave. Greg flopped down a moment later, falling quickly to sleep. I shivered in the cold air. I slowly padded over to Greg's sleeping form, curling up next to him. A few minutes passed before I too let sleep overcome me.
After Greg saved me, I finally felt I could trust him. Well, I should be going now. *Yawn* It's getting kinda late. I'll continue my story later. Good night.
