Introduction
"Use Razor Leaf Chikorita!"
"Dodge It Starmie!"
"HA"
As Starmie flies up around Chikorita's attack we find Ash and Misty finally getting in some serious training! It's a balmy day and the rocky terrain by the mountains has made for some tough climbing but our hero's are taking full advantage of the time to train before the next gym battle!
"Starmie, Use Water-Gun!" Coming out of it's spin, starmie replied with a another 'HA' and lined up for it's attack. Fleeing the high-pressure water spray chikorita barely dodges the attack and chases under the attacking pokemon with a surprised "Chik!"
"Chikorita, Aaa!" Watching his pokemon rush under the attack Ash realises the little pokemon is tiring, not that she would ever let Ash see it. She'd already fought Staru and had an embarrassing encounter with psyduck but had insisted on battling Starmie as well. While Ash was very proud of his pokemon for her guts he could see she was reaching the end of her tether!
Seeing an opening Ash cries out his command; "Chikorita, get directly underneath it and grab it with Vine-Whip!"
"No Starmie, Break past the vine-whip with a tackle!" The two pokemon respond almost instantly, chikorita coming to a standstill and trying to lash out at Misty's pokemon as Starmie begins a stylised fall towards her with enough spin to knock away Chikorita's attack. "NOO!"
"YES! Score one for Starmie!" Misty coos with enthusiasm as Chikorita goes flying! "Water always wins in the End!"
"Okay Chikorita, that's Enough!" Ash replies looking at his pokemon.
Clambering to her feet, Chikorita stares at Ash with a groggy expression... "Chik?" She enquires, waving her leave in the air as if to say "Your kidding!"
"You're exhausted!" He elaborates, "It's Pikachu's turn now!"
Pikachu leaps down from Ash's shoulder, sparks jumping from his cheeks. "CHIK!" She replies, and tries to intercept Starmie with a razor leaf as he flies back to Misty.
"Chikorita, NO!" They scream at Chikorita together, glad that the attack missed its aim. Both pokemon stop still and Ash stares down at Chikorita in Frustration.
A short distance off Brock looks up from his cook pot and frowns at the scene along side him. "This is not going to end well.
"This is only a practice Match!" Ash tells her with all the authority he can muster. Chikorita had recently started becoming rebellious again, her jealousy over Pikachu causing her to act out against his command. She'd sent the best part of the last two days outside of her pokeball hanging out with them but if anything that had just made her behaves even worse! "You don't have to win every battle! If you go on much longer you'll pass out! Let Pikachu handle it!"
Looking at Pikachu as he takes position between the battlers Chikorita furies! Arching her down she growls out a throaty "Chik-or-it-a" And takes aim.
She doesn't give anybody time to react. Charging at Pikachu like a green and brown bullet she shoulders into him with an attack half-way between a tackle and a head-but. As Pikachu goes flying Ash is flabbergasted. Pikachu recovers instantly, landing on his feet with an exclamation.
"Chikorita! What the HELL do you think you're doing!" Misty and Ash Cry moments after each other!
For a moment the air becomes completely still as Chikorita stares ash down with a combination of jealousy and pain.
As Pikachu trots back to Ash's side an angry tear starts building in the corner of her eye! "CHICK!" She cries out with a flip of her head then turn and runs.
"I knew it!" Brock mutters as Chikorita runs past him into the edge of the forest.
"Chikorita! Come BACK HERE!" Ash immediately follows in hot pursuit, Misty trailing immediately behind and Pikachu behind her.
"Chikorita, Get back here!"
"ASH, wait up!"
"PIK A CHUU!"
Standing up from his cook pot Brock lets Ash run past but brings Misty up short, the distance between her and ash building with every one of Ash's gaping strides. "He has to handle this himself!" Brock tells her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "This has been coming for some time!"
"But, anything could happen to him!" She hesitates as she schools her face. "You know how dense he is!"
Brock gives Misty a quizzical look, understanding better than she would ever admit. Pikachu runs past the pair, the gap between him and Ash still widening.
"Trust me!" Brock tells her. "I think this is something they need to work out on their own!"
Ash could see Chikorita as she ran ahead of him through the forest on the side of the mountain. The scrub was thick and Chikorita was gaining due to her small size, allowing her pass underneath the obstacles he had to struggle through.
"Chikorita, Wait Up!" He called out as he struggled though the under scrub. he though ruefully. Glancing over his shoulder he could see no sign of Misty or Pikachu. Reaching to his belt he tried to grab Bulbasaurs pokeball to find it missing, looking down he groaned in realisation finding his pokeballs missing. "Damnit, I can't even call out a pokemon to clear this scrub for me!"
Resting with one foot on a gnarled tree root he tried to grab his breath. "I know I had them on during the battle, which means they must have got caught on the branches I just clawed my way through." Looking back the way he had come Ash tried to pick the path he'd taken and found a solid wall of briars bushes and branches, his forearms scratched from the effort or trying to push through them after his wayward pokemon.
"I guess they'll be safe there until I get back. It's not like I will be able to find them without chikorita's help!"
He pressed onwards.
Ahead of him Chikorita was running blind, her little almond eyes filled with tears. Following some unknown course she never even noticed when the forest above her suddenly turned to harsh scrub. Behind her she heard Ash call out and longed to stop but her legs no longer obeyed her mind; now controlled by her troubled heart. Reaching an almost solid rock face Chikorita hesitated, ready to stop before seeing the scrub open in front of her to reveal the mouth of a cave. Passing into its mouth she kept running, not daring to stop and wanting only somewhere to hide. Once there in the deepest cave she collapsed onto the floor spread eagle and sobbed as hard as she could. In her pain she never noticed the large rock in the passage to the cave glow in a greenish hue when she passed, or the way the glow was echoed as she lay in that cave by a glow from her own sobbing wracking body....
Outside, Ash has finally caught up. While he had lost sight of Chikorita he had known she was heading in a straight line through rougher and rougher terrain. Coming to an almost solid wall of briars Ash could vaguely see the top of a cave opening behind it and promptly climbed a nearby tree, clambering from branch to branch as he tried to get as far out over the briars as possible. "I really hope you're in there Chikorita." He mumbles as he climbs, "Cause it's going to be a paiiiiiin!" The creaking branch snaps while he's still part way across. Leaping for dear life he tumbles bruised and battered to the other side of the briars and groans as he stands up to dust himself off. Looking back, the large branch now covers the briars and scrub crushing them and making a week kind of bridge.
Walking into the mouth of the cave he calls out as he makes his way after her. As he enters he passes the large stone without noticing it. It glows again ominously and in the air the faintest of sounds comes from deep inside it. "This will be interesting.." a voice says. "Let's see how this plays out."
