The Enigma Tree

The Enigma Tree

After a long day of touring the section of the Amazon Nani called home, the two monkeys decided to seek out a beautiful tree to watch the sunset on. The memory of the kiss lingered in their thoughts. The two of them nuzzled in the setting sun, sharing stories of their lives prior to meeting.

"... and that was that day's fishing trip. I couldn't believe that pokemon deceived me. There isn't anything in those flower ponds that are edible. Any water I do drink, I get in the morning off of broad leaves."

"But I heard that some do indeed have good things in them... do you like to eat amphibians?"

"Ugh no way, it's fish or fruit for me. Amphibians here are too poisonous or mudkippy to be eaten."

Mimi had to laugh at her companion's response. She felt very close to the ambipom and yet for one reason or another never noticed her gender mistake. The ambipom's life story of challenging the pack leader and losing and living on 'his' own only reinforced the false conviction. "Oh, I don't know what I could have done without you being in the same place as me. Thank you, Nani."

"No prob... but before we continue, let's get some more enigma berries so that we can have the whole day tomorrow to talk about random things and wile away out time together talking about random things."

"Alright, what's the plan?" Mimi sounded a bit miffed as the romantic spell was broken in a moment of a certain monkey's talking stomach.

"You know how precious the enigma berries were to me right? Well thereason why I horde them is that there is only one tree in the entire Amazon that has the fruit and its only in the misty dried areas. However, a certain surly pokemon has decided to camp it out and try to attack anyone caught even so much as taking a branch from it. That pokemon is a Spanish-speaking kecleon who always curses me every time I decide to take some fruit. I have only succeeded once at getting some fruit and that's why I horded it, but since then, I was raided. But with the two of us, we could totally pull it off."

"... But what is the plan?"

"Well it's a simple plan. I call it the... cross up machine. Usually I have to use my tail paws to distract both of the kecleon's individual eyes but doe to their invariable length, he can still trace what I am doing. This is where you come in. using myself as the screen, you will collect a lot of berries and stash them in a tree we will pick out before the rail. If things get dicey, I will force a conflict ... any questions?"

Normally, an alarm similar to a nuclear meltdown siren would have gone off in her head. Nothing seemed too out of the ordinary for this sort of foraging. Nothing made her say that there was something utterly lacking in the plan. What would happen if she was spotted? Supposing the ambipom did distract the kecleon and they did collect the fruit, there would be no way to collect tons of it without drawing his attention. What about the sense of smell? Can chameleons smell? If they could, then the plan would never work. But none of this occurred to her as the bravado of Nani's lofty farfetched plan plus her infatuation yielded complete oblivion to the reality of the plan. They pushed forward.

Their target was a willowy looking Enigma berry tree that despite its particularly thin leaves and less than sturdy frame can only grow in the centers of large forests like that of the Amazon. The concave dark green thin leaves were less than an inch across and 5 inches wide. The flowers that normally appeared were black as night and had no smell attached to it. The dark fruits dangled from the frail tree as if it lacked weight. These trees often attracted the cruelest predators on the small creatures that enjoy either the great nectar of the foreboding flowers or the strange fruit. Usually it would be a clan of pokemon that would invade the precious tree and enjoy the fruits of their conquest and any of the pokemon bold enough to attempt to take it from them. However, this tree was different as it was inhabited by only one.

Nani observes the tree from afar, hanging upside down as usual. Mimi was right next to her searching out a spot to stash the berries. "Oh crap... I can't see that kecleon... but I do see that there is a second pokemon hanging from the tree." Mimi strained her eyes to see it, but couldn't get a visual on it. "It has a yellow body and looks pretty toothy too, Mimi. Regardless, the plan will go on so long as we don't bother the plant."

"Nani, lead the way..."

From this point, they sailed through the trees towards their goal; hunger knocked back a notch in favor of the challenge of retrieving the fruit. The sparse rays of the evening sun penetrated their backs and unfurling into the appearance of an aura. With her superior speed, Nani moved forward and created seven illusory copies of herself. This was in hopes that wherever this kecleon hid, he would be completely distracted by her acrobatics and clones. The septet of purple blurs descended on the tree, tail paws joined together. However, the girth of the tree was wider than the circle, forcing them into only a half perimeter. Nani directed all of her into trying to extract the fruit. Unlike the first time she grabbed the fruit, the stems were woody and needed force to break them off.

At this point, it was time for Mimi to get into the action. She approached the tree from the lowest point on the opposite side of the tree. Using her body strength, she yanked berries off with impressive efficiency and rushed them to storage crevice in a nearby tree. Mimi went a second time and had no problems either. She forgot to keep tabs on what was happening on the other side so she just kept on going back and forth collecting berries off the different branches, until she felt the tree shake as if something hit it.

Mimi finished her job quickly, gathering the fruit in earnest, ripping the fruit off the tree like paper and carrying as many as she could back to one of the storage spots. The whole plan went off without a single hitch... in fact it was the first time all day where something didn't go wrong. The victreebel remained mostly unaware of any visitor to the tree with the exclusion of passersby it scooped up into its large mouth and there was no sight of the malevolent chameleon. Nani couldn't pull any of the fruit off in a stationary form, something that Mimi luckily didn't notice.

*Wow... my arms are strong but not strong enough to handle these annoying tasty fruit. C'mon, Nani! You can't be so weak that you can't remove fruit from a droopy tree like this?!* She recalled all her illusory copies and pulled with all her might with her forepaws. She grunted pulling against the tree with all her might, eyes clenched tight.

"Aaaaaammmmm-biiiiiiiiiiii---poooooooom!" she pulled as hard as she could but she lost her grip and tumbled backwards. She sat up rubbing her back and looking around; after all, she wasn't too stealthy about her inability to pick a simple fruit. Somehow, she was able to pick it up last time... but how did she do it? It was hard for her to remember between the physical exertion and the embarrassment. Idly, her tail paws rise up and pluck the fruit off the tree, triggering her memory immediately.

"Of course... my tails... I really am the jungle idiot, heh."

"You sure are... puta" said a hoarse accented voice.

"I was wondering when you would show up, greedy lizard."

"I was watching your weakness... already your lady lover is being dispatched and now I'll get rid of you." The Kecleon climbed down the branch, barely coming into view. His eyes were bloodshot, possibly out of anger for the lack of fruit on his tree.

"What?! You didn't dare touch her! I'll pulverize you for that!"

"Wow so jumpy, hahaha? I never said I got rid of her. "

Nani tried to sidestep the kecleon and go to where their meeting place was to be, but the Kecleon used his own double team, surrounding her. "Where do you think you are going?"

Mimi was still carrying some berries when she noticed the atmosphere around where the cache of food smelled like honey. Her initial response was to go to the source but somehow, she knew the smell from somewhere before. Her thoughts went back to the earlier night when she smelled the same thing right before a plantlike creature tried to eat her. She started heating up her internal combustion organ in preparation for an attack as she got closer.

When she got there, she saw that yellow, toothy plant that was supposed to be on the Enigma tree. It just sat there, staring at her intently, but stationary nonetheless. What should she do now? Nani is counting on her success.
