Never Winter Chapter 1: Salvation from a Storm
Never Winter: Chapter 1: Salvation from a Storm
Raindrops fell from the grey sky. A girl dressed in dark blue pants and a black singlet was running through the storm, she was trying to reach for the hoodie in her bag, but she was simply grabbing anything and everything bar her hoodie and she would be stuck in the rain if she stopped to actually look for it. The girl ran through the storm, down route 202, she was running as fast as she could, jumping over ledges and leaping small bushes. Sandgem town was only a few more minutes away and the girl was glad to see it, she could not wait to get out of the pouring rain. The automatic doors of Professor Rowan's research lab opened, and the soaking girl dove inside. She stood in the doorway, her clothes soaked and her long brown hair was drenched and dripping water onto the floor, breathless. The scientists all turned to face her, questionable looks on their faces, the eldest and most senior scientist spoke up out of the silence "Oh, my dear Laura, your mother said you would be here soon, I didn't expect you to come during this storm though" Professor Rowan chuckled, still panting from her exhausting run Laura smiled, "Come with me my dear, I have your Pokémon all ready for you." Laura walked only a few paces behind Professor Rowan, not only trying to keep up, but also trying not to slip on the water falling from her soaking clothes. Professor Rowan opened a draw, fitted with a foam bottom that had holes cut out of it, a draw made to hold Poké balls, Rowan pulled a Poké ball out of the draw and handed it to Laura, she smiled as she grasped in the Poké ball in her hand, "Is it?" Professor Rowan chuckled and folded his arms "Yes it is... your very own Piplup."
Laura could not stop herself from giggling. Professor Rowan handed her a Pokédex, Laura thanked Professor Rowan, and she began to walk through the automatic doors when a large lightning bolt shot down from the sky, followed almost immediately by a loud crash of thunder. Laura stopped dead in her tracks, standing in the entrance to the lab. "Umm... I think it would be best if you stayed at the Poké centre next door Laura, it would be unwise to travel in this weather especially now that it's night time." Laura nodded, "Can I call my mum please, to let her know what's up?'
"Certainly... over there." Professor Rowan pointed to a computer in the corner of the lab. Laura let her mother know that she was safe, and her plans of staying in the Sandgem Poké centre for the night, she thanked Professor Rowan again and pulled a hooded jumper out of her bag, she left the lab and sprinted to the Poké centre. She walked up to the counter and asked Nurse Joy if she could rent a room for the night, Nurse Joy handed a card key with the numbers 017 printed largely on it. Laura thanked Nurse Joy for the card when the doors of the Poké centre burst open and a teenage boy dressed in warm dark clothes stumbled in, he was dripping wet from the rainstorm.
The boy had caught the attention of the entire centre, he was breathless, bruised and obviously hurt, he was holding something, a rolled up black towel. His breath rasping the battered teenage boy, could only manage enough strength to say a few words, "help... please..." the boy collapsed to the floor, Nurse Joy and her Chansey ran over to the fallen boy, "Oh my goodness, young man are you all right!?" Nurse Joy asked as she lifted the boy's head up, Chansey pushed a small pillow under the boys head "Is it all right...? Help it... Please!" the boy closed his eyes after finishing his strained sentence. Nurse Joy looked down at the black towel; she picked it up and slowly unravelled it, "An Egg!" Nurse joy was caught off guard by selfless nature of the boy. Laura came out of her daze, and she quickly knelt down beside Nurse Joy, "Nurse Joy is there anything I can do to help!?"
"Yes there is" Nurse Joy handed the Pokémon egg to Chansey, "Help me get this boy into a bed" the boy was hauled onto a medical bed; Nurse Joy covered his body with a blanket. "Chansey, please, make sure the egg is all right, please hurry--" the boy held one eye half opened, his vision was blurry; he could only make out the pink hair of Nurse Joy, "--All right, please hurry!" was the last thing the boy heard before he completely lost consciousness.
The night faded away. Morning, the boy's eye shot open. "THE EGG!" the boy sprung up in his bed, but quickly fell back, groaning in pain. Laura was sitting in front of the burnt out fire, playing with her new Piplup, she was startled by the boys awakening, "Nurse Joy, come quick!" Laura stood at the end of the bed, leaning towards the boy, "Are you ok?" Nurse Joy came into the room, "It's nice to see that you're ok young man, how are you feeling?"
"Is the egg all right!?" the boy grabbed Nurse Joy's wrist firmly, he seemed particularly anxious about the egg's welfare. Nurse Joy nodded, "Yes, Chansey has been taking care of it all night, the egg is safe and the Pokémon will survive." The boy's face immediately relaxed, it seemed that all of the tension was released at once; he exhaled loudly, a sigh of relief. "Thank you."
"It was my pleasure--" Nurse Joy smiled softly at the boy, "--Can you tell me your name?"
"Gabriel..."
"Gabriel Rhapsody." The boy was cut off by the voice of a seasoned man. "Oh, Professor Rowan, you know this boy?" Nurse Joy had not seen Professor Rowan standing in the door. "Yes I do, his father and I are acquaintances, and Gabriel's elder brothers came for their starter Pokémon just two months ago, how are your brothers Gabriel?"
"Driving dad mad..." Gabriel's voice was tired. Professor Rowan chuckled in his usual fashion. Laura was still leaning over the edge of the bed; Piplup was jumping up and down on Laura foot, wanting to be picked up so he could see what was going on. Laura bent over, picked up Piplup and placed it on the very end of the bed, 'Pip' pip'
"Gabriel, Nurse Joy has informed me about the egg, and how hurt you were, can you tell us how this happened?" Professor Rowan was very keen on hearing Gabriel's story. Gabriel nodded. "I was walking, down route 202... in the storm... I... was on my way to get my Pokémon from... you... Professor... and half way here... I saw a large pack of Growlithe--"
The rain fell heavy, and lightning streaked across the dark sky, Gabriel was walking quickly, due to the rain, on his way to Professor Rowan's research lab. He stopped, he could hear growls, he walked a little further and he saw a small pack of Growlithe, all crowded around in a circle, growling and barking, bright flames, spewing from their mouths. Gabriel didn't know what was happening, and then he heard whining, not from a Growlithe. He saw black coloured paws rise from the centre of the Growlithe circle, it was a Pokémon. Gabriel felt sick at this sight, he could hear the Pokémon squealing and whining, the Growlithe were attacking the Pokémon. The squealing stopped, Gabriel's jaw dropped, he ran to the circle. The Growlithe had not seen him. Gabriel peered over the Growlithe and saw a pile of black ash and lines of black liquid, as the rain washed away what was once a Pokémon. Then something caught Gabriel's eye, it was a Pokémon egg. Gabriel gasped, and the Growlithe turned their attention to him. Gabriel didn't know what to do, so without thinking he dove into the circle, and grabbed the egg. The Growlithe reacted immediately, they swarmed on Gabriel, biting and clawing at him. Gabriel kicked his legs out in every direction, before he sprang to his feet and jumped out of the circle, he kicked one last Growlithe that was stopping him from escaping, and with that, Gabriel; badly wounded ran off towards Sandgem town, while wrapping the Pokémon egg in a black towel from his bag.
"--I hugged the egg to keep it warm... and I ran... well... staggered here..." Gabriel had strained his speech to tell the entire story, Nurse Joy, Professor Rowan and Laura all stood in silence, stunned looks on their faces, even Laura's Piplup had an uneasy look on his face. "How on earth could any Pokémon be so savage!?"
"During storms, most fire type Pokémon will become hostile and yes, even savage to others. They become concerned only for their flame, and will attack anything they perceive as a threat at this time." Professor Rowan frowned after finishing his statement. "I didn't know Pokémon could be like that, it's hard to imagine them... killing another Pokémon!" Laura felt sick in her stomach, thinking about Gabriel's story. "I'm quite amazed that you were only hurt as bad as you were, I've heard stories of other incidents of savage Pokémon like this... and... well they were not as lucky as you"
"It's my fault..." Gabriel should have been proud of himself, but instead he felt a guilty shiver run up his spine. Except for Laura the others had confused looks on their faces, "What's your fault dear, you saved that egg's life!" Nurse Joy tried to put a smile onto Gabriel's face, but it did not work. "If I did... didn't just stand there... like an idiot... I could have saved... those..."
"Now that's enough Gabriel! If you had tried to save that Pokémon, you and that egg, would have not made it here, I'm amazed you were even able to save that egg..."
'Chance!' Nurse Joy's Chansey came fumbling into the room holding the egg that Gabriel saved. Nurse Joy turned around, "Chansey what's the matter? Oh!" the egg was moving, "Gabriel here quickly, I think you should take this." She handed the wobbling egg to Gabriel, who, with Professor Rowan's aid, was now sitting up in the bed. Gabriel let the egg lay between his legs. "I've never seen a Pokémon hatch before." Laura seemed to be beaming with happiness, while Nurse Joy had a proud smile. Professor Rowan seemed indifferent about the experience, obviously this was not the first time he had seen an egg hatch. The egg wobbled in Gabriel's lap for a few minutes, before it suddenly cracked, and finally the egg completely broke and a small Pokémon emerged.
"What is that Pokémon?" Laura had never seen the type of Pokémon that stood in Gabriel's lap, and Piplup was confused about it as well. "My goodness." Nurse Joy held her hand over her gaping jaw. "That is very interesting!" Professor Rowan stroked his chin, "Laura, why don't you scan it with your new Pokédex." Laura nodded and fumbled around in her backpack for her Pokédex; she soon found it, flipped it open and scanned the Pokémon in Gabriel's lap. 'Riolu. The emanation Pokémon. The aura that emanates from its body intensifies to alert others if it is afraid or sad.'
"Wait--" Laura was puzzled "--That doesn't look like its photo!" The small newborn Riolu had almost nothing in common with the Riolu in the Pokédex. A normal Riolu had predominately blue fur, white circles of fur on their arms, black fur on their paws, and a black strip of fur that surrounded its eyes like a mask. This Riolu though, had no blue fur, instead, this Riolu had completely black fur, and the unique stripe of fur that masked its eye, was pure white. "It must be a rare 'shiny' Riolu..."
"No I don't think so--" Professor Rowan quickly interrupted Nurse Joy "--A rare-born or 'shiny' Riolu has yellow fur, this one is completely black... something must of happened while it was in the egg... maybe something to do with the Growlithe's attack" Laura spoke up, "Is it all right?"
"Yes I'm sure it is, Pokémon seem to adapt to certain living conditions, if the egg was hit with the flames of a Growlithe then the Pokémon must have adapted to its extreme heat, very interesting..."
"Renu..." Gabriel whispered under his breath, the others turned their attention to Gabriel, who was nursing the Riolu. "What was that dear?" Nurse Joy leant towards Gabriel. "Renu... her name."
"That's an interesting name Gabriel, why so?" Professor Rowan questioned. "It means born from ashes... she deserves a special name..." Gabriel's voice had the tone of a caring mother. "A very suiting name Gabriel, I need to return to the lab now though, I've got more trainers coming for their starting Pokémon. I hope you feel better... and Laura, I wish you well on your journey, I must tell you I was delighted when I heard that you offered your room for Gabriel. Good day," Professor Rowan waved to Nurse Joy, Laura and Gabriel, and left the room. Gabriel looked up at Laura, "You gave me your room...?"
"Well... yeah, you looked really hurt and there were no other rooms open, plus I knew I would be up all night I was way to hyper after getting Piplup here, so I kinda didn't need the bed--" Laura stroked Piplup's head "--I was playing with Piplup all night."
"And she kept a weather eye on you Gabriel, changing your bandages and making sure you were ok." Nurse Joy interrupted Laura, letting Gabriel know what she had done for him. Gabriel looked up again at Laura, "Thank you!" Laura smiled, "No problem." Nurse Joy put her hands up, I think it's time you got some rest Gabriel, you are still injured--" Nurse Joy helped Gabriel lay back down on the bed, and while pulling his blanket up she turned to Laura "--And you need to go to sleep missy, spending all of last night awake you must be exhausted! Come now!" Gabriel lifted his head up as Nurse Joy and Laura were both leaving the room, "Thank you Laura, thank you Nurse Joy" Laura waved and left the room, and Nurse Joy bowed before closing the door.
Gabriel lay on the bed in silence, when he felt the newborn Pokémon crawling up his stomach, Renu stared at Gabriel with a smile on her face, usually Riolu have red eyes, but instead of two red eyes, Renu's left eye was blue, another unique trait of this special Pokémon. Then out of nowhere Renu spoke in a soft and sweet feminine voice, "Re-nu...?" she pointed at herself, Gabriel smiled, "do you like your name?" the little black Riolu nodded, "Ye... ye..." she could not speak as well as a more mature Riolu, but she tried. She smiled again at Gabriel then curled up on Gabriel's chest, seemingly trying to cuddle into him. Gabriel rested his head on the pillow, and closed his eyes. "Don't worry Renu, I'll take care of you forever." He placed his hand over Renu and held her against him. Unknown to Gabriel Renu smiled, she was feeling completely safe, and Gabriel let his hand rest on Renu. Weak, injured and physically exhausted Gabriel fell asleep holding Renu, the little black Riolu that hatched out of the egg that Gabriel had saved from a pack of savage Growlithe, enraged by a storm over route 202.
