Enter Nurse Joy

It was well into the quiet hours of the night at the nearby pokemon center. The center's own Nurse Joy was busy typing at her computer. It had been a relatively slow night. She yawned and stretched her arms above her head. Truth be told, she was beginning to get a little restless. One drawback of living in a city populated by businesses was that there were not many trainers or people that had pokemon around this area, so she took what she could get.

All of that studying at various pokemon academies had not paid off well for her. This was the thought that plagued her as she stared at the empty pokemon center. As a result, she did most of her work online, answering the questions of the men and women of the city that had basic questions about the pokemon that they had. She responded to these questions and received a majority of her income from these consults.

She was in the middle of reading a plea for assistance by a businessman who had a sandshrew that used 'dig' mercilessly in his home when the doors to the pokemon center slid open. A boy with a pokemon cap carrying a pikachu ran inside. Alongside him was a man that had spiky hair and no visible eyes and a girl with blue hair carrying a piplup. The pikachu looked badly hurt, and she ran up to the counter to assist them.

"We're here, buddy", the boy spoke to his pikachu. "Everything is going to be okay now."

The boy handed the pikachu to her, and she looked pikachu over. He looked like he had been hit with a poison attack of some sort. He also bore wounds that looked like they were from a bullet seed attack. Apparently, he had been attacked by multiple pokemon. After handing the pikachu over to her chansey, Nurse Joy shook her head at the boy.

"I'll treat this pokemon, but you should not have your pikachu battle multiple pokemon at the same time. That's just reckless!"

The boy looked down to the side, dejected. As he did, the man with the spiky hair seemed to glide over to the nurse. He quickly grabbed her hands and stared at her lovingly. The nurse looked at the man warily. The man began to spout some romantic gibberish before suddenly stopping with an ominous look on his face. "My croagunk senses are tingling."

A croagunk was standing right behind the man, poison jab at the ready. The man let go of her hands before rubbing the back of his head. He started to speak again. "The situation is a little more complicated than that", the man said. "My name is Brock, that boy over there is Ash, and the girl over there is Dawn. The three of us have been travelling in the Sinnoh region for a while, now. We often find ourselves in the middle of some big conflict of some sort while travelling. We battle this seriously because we know that something will be lost if we don't."

Brock looked over at Ash. "Ash was in the middle of a battle with a group from Team Rocket. The only reason he fought that battle was because he would be without a pikachu if he didn't."

Nurse Joy could tell that they were being sincere about all of this. Still, she was unsure about one thing.
"What is Team Rocket, anyway?"

Ash looked at her in shock. "You've never heard of Team Rocket!?"

Brock put his hand on Ash's shoulder before speaking. "Remember, Ash. This is the Sinnoh region. Team Rocket has never had widespread operations here. She wouldn't know nearly as much as we do about them."

Ash looked thoughtful. "Oh, yeah. I forgot about that."

"Team Rocket is bad news", Dawn clarified. "They're an organization of thieves that steal pokemon from others."

Nurse Joy looked mildly surprised. "I always thought there were people like that somewhere in the world. I just never thought that those people were part of some global network."

Brock's voice hardened. "You wouldn't believe the horrors we've witnessed."

Nurse Joy looked at Brock. Despite her years as a nurse, despite all of the various conditions she saw pokemon in, she felt that Brock was right. The city didn't hold a candle to what could be experienced throughout the rest of the world.

The door to the pokemon center opened again. A beat-up trio entered the pokemon center, sprinting towards the counter.

"Our pokemon need healing right away!", snapped the female of the group.

"OOH! A vending machine!", said another member of the trio. "I wonder if it takes bottlecaps?"

"Miltank Milk for Meowth!", the final voice yelled.

Ash and company turned around. They're eyes widened at the site of a man, woman, and meowth with burns, cuts, and messy hair. The trio that entered did the same thing.

"It's da' twoips!", the meowth shouted.

"Not you three again!", Ash yelled.

Nurse Joy didn't share everyone's expressions. "Excuse me, but who are you three?

Jessie : "Three charming members flying through ominous winds!"
James: "Playtime is over, now the mayhem begins!"
Jessie: "In every place!"
James: "In outer space!"
Meowth: "We're in your face!"
Jessie: "We double your trouble with each of our chants!"
James: "I... left my rose in my other pants"
"Jessie!"
"James!"
"Meowth, too!"
Jessie: "Putting the Do-Gooders in their place!"
James: "Saying our motto twice in one day..."
Meowth: "What a disgrace!"
"Wobbufet!"
"Mime Mime."

Nurse Joy looked at them as they finished their motto with a confused look on her face. "Come again?"

The three members fell over anime style.

"We are not doing another motto!", James whined.

Brock looked at Nurse Joy with apprehension. "These are the people that attacked pikachu earlier. Team Rocket members: Jessie, James, and Meowth!"

"No need to worry!", Dawn said. "They're mostly harmless, but compensate by being ridiculously persistent."

James looked at Jessie. "Oh no she didn't!"

Jessie looked at her angrily. "Don't listen to her! We're the biggest baddies you've ever seen!"
"We dazzle the people that watch us from their screen!", James added.
"We break the fourth wall just to be mean!", Meowth finished.

"Would you three knock it off!", Ash shouted.

Nurse Joy watched the people in the center argue back and forth. She clapped her hands together loudly. "Alright! Break it up, everyone! If you want your pokemon to be treated, then start acting like people that actually look responsible enough to own one!"

Both sides quieted down. Both groups dispersed to opposite sides of the pokemon center, not speaking to each other. Nurse Joy handed the pokemon off to the chansey staff and got back to work. Eventually, one of the Team Rocket members came up to the counter.

"Excuse me?"

Nurse Joy looked up to see James standing at the counter with a concerned look on his face. Her expression softened a little. "What can I do for you, James?"

"Do you have change for a bottlecap?", he asked.

Nurse Joy sighed. This was going to be a long night.
Chapter End Notes:Because Team Rocket is to humor what A1 is to steak. Yeah, it's that important.
