Episode 17 - Dark Depths: Straight into Hell
"Am I... dead?"
No, that was impossible. I could still hear my heart calmly pumping blood throughout my body. The words, "Hey... hey!" echoing through my mind as I tried to open my eyes but they would not respond.
Suddenly, a quick sting of pain originated from my left cheek shocked me back to reality. I was staring into the face of Cameron who was kneeling over near me, "Sorry 'bout that, you just wouldn't get the fuck up, starting to worry me there..."
I lifted myself off the cold, metallic floor from where I lay for who-knows-how-long. "Ooh... that's disgusting..." Cameron whispered as I dusted myself off, I looked at my arms to see blood staining my white fur, next I checked my tail, also soaked in blood. I must have fallen in the blood that was scraped from the stairway to a nearby door next to where I found Cameron, hiding in the corner of a small room.
Forget it, the blood stains did not matter right now, all I knew is that we were in serious danger, "But... how did we esca..." before I could even finish my own sentence, my eyelids automatically shut tight, nothing else to be seen.
Next, a low bang was heard in my mind when suddenly I envisioned myself out of my body, the background glowing a black and white graphic color, the only color to be seen was the color red. I saw myself engaged against the Nightwalkers, most of them hanging against the walls surrounding us when I lifted my head back and used Flamethrower. The view switched around at random, looking at everything in the room then suddenly zooming in to my mouth as I used my ability, but the instant the flame escaped my mouth, every single Nightwalker just vanished without a trace, they turned into a black mist and vanished off the face of the Earth.
I gasped for breath suddenly, as if while I was subjected to that unusual trance I was not breathing. A bright white light appeared and faded as I envisioned reality once more, my heart rate doubled instantly and I found myself panting as I just finished running for a long period of time. I shook in place violently as the vision subsided, I was finally able to take a big breath and my heart rate went back to normal at that instant, leaving me shivering from that experience as an aftermath.
"That was some quick thinking using your Flamethrowers on those bastards. Heck, I should have been the one to do that first. I am a Charmeleon after all..."
His voice echoed in my mind as it was trying to regulate what was current and what was not.
"What... what just happened..." I started, drawing Cameron's attention to me, "I just saw... what happened to us... but it wasn't in my own head... it wasn't a first-person view" I answered, paranoid from this odd experience.
"Oh, you scared me over that?" Cameron started, "That was what we call 'Instincts', it allows you to witness things from the future or past, whether you were there or not, few have this rare ability as well, it is triggered when someone talks about something from the past or present, but it's not triggered all of the time, I take it this is your first Instincts experience"
"No... I've had this one time before, but I was too young to think it was abnormal"
That was the day I saw this entire war coming, I was very young, the effects of "Equal Age" was taking its effect on me, the drug that humans used to let us Pokemon age like the humans did, 15 was considered young to humans but considered elderly for Pokemon one time, but now almost every Pokemon has been injected with this drug that allows us to actually go to the age of 70 and 80. I was 6 years old and in my home back with my clan, when you become 6 years of age, the effects of Equal Age become more noticeable, puking, sweating, itching, all of those effects.
One night I went to bed and envisioned something truly disturbing, this dream literally ruined my reputation as a sane Zangoose, they all ridiculed me of my words, "A war is coming, I've seen it, I've seen it all, the humans are going to kill us all!"
It's a shame they never believed me, but I'm afraid it would not have made any other difference anyways, they were all a part of the Anriu, the entire Kuhn clan, my dad, my mom, my sister Sydney, now deceased, and brother Zamaius, all of us. But when was the Anriu created, was it always here or did it come recently?
"Okay, now I believe I know where we should go to find your friend there... and I'm afraid that the trail of blood leads to it" he said, gulping at the very thought of not moving AWAY from the trail of blood.
I wiped my forehead with my right arm and proclaimed heroically, "Let's go..." All I had to say is that I have had enough, we are going to get everyone out and leave as soon as possible, before anything more disturbing happens.
Moving up to the door with Cameron close behind, I saw a kind of "Tic-Tac-Toe" style blood splatter on the hard wooden door. "Wow... I'm not really oozing with curiosity on what's on the other side..." Cameron said, his voice indicated that he must have still been in shock after the Nightwalker incident.
"Yeah... that's not a very good idea to just kick down the door, can you get some lights on in here, I need to at least see what I'm doing" I said, ordering Cameron to the power box with a long switch coming out of it near 3 empty brown barrels in the corner to the right of our location.
"Okay..."
Cameron cautiously moved towards the power box as if he expected something right about then. I covered his location, pointing my AER-40 rifle as he did previously and awaited any hostiles.
I had to say, having this tool at my disposal was very exhilarating, now I feel as if I am as powerful as a PEF full force battalion. Plus the style to this contraption was without match to anything I had on, which got me thinking about that black belt Litira gave me all that time ago. Almost scared at what I might see, I decided to look down to see if I still had the belt, the one last thing that I can remember Litira for if she cannot defeat Lucifer in the Plane of Suffering.
"Good, good..." I whispered as I saw the black belt still strapped to my waist, though the canteen she gave me was gone, at least I had the belt itself.
Looking back up to see how Cameron was, I was horrified to see something crawling out of the wall next to him, it was a Nightwalker acting as if he was slowly and quietly stalking his prey.
"Cameron, get your head down!" I yelled as I quickly aimed and fired at the creature. The Nightwalker exploded in a mist of shadows. its death was truly remarkable in all of its evil. It was almost like black water splattering all over the place then suddenly vanishing into thin-air.
"Hurry up Cameron, if these guys cannot live in the light, turn it on before more show up, we can't rely on our Flamethrowers for that long!" I ordered.
I turned around to see an uncountable amount of Nightwalkers staring me in the face, "Switch it now-w-w-w-w!" I yelled in a desperate attempt to back away further against the wall which was keeping me from retreating.
He switched the lights back on once a Nightwalker's claws nearly shredded my cheeks, all of the Nightwalkers died instantly, the black mist flying everywhere then suddenly vanishing.
"C-Could you have cut it any closer?!" I yelled, so very happy to see that I was alright, but then the thought came to me, I should have used my Flamethrower but I really did not have enough time to react to what had just happened. I really had to work on my reflexes.
"Sorry..."
I slowly turned back to the door from where the blood trail leads to and fitted my claw through the Pokemon handle, the door opening slightly, creaking loudly and waiting for me to open it the rest of the way.
Letting out a loud grunt, I pushed the doors open with the thrust of my entire body, causing it to fly open instantly and let the light from our room flood the room we have just discovered.
"Mother of mercy..." Cameron whispered as we both stared at the piles and piles of dead bodies in the room. "Oh no..." I whispered as my eyes shut tight again, my breathing halting to a stop.
The same black and white view came back as I saw countless deaths occurring in this very room, the screams of pain and agony racing through my mind as I saw so much blood and so much violence fill the room.
They were all killing each other.
A man completely covered in blood wielded a knife in his hands, stabbing all of the scientists in the room, some of the corpses rising up from the floor, skin completely turned from their original color to charcoal with crusty wrinkles. Furniture and laboratory equipment flew across the room, killing whoever crossed paths with it. A woman jumped on the back of one of the men who possessed weapons and grabbed onto his jaw, pulling hard against it and ripping it clean off his face, she ended up being stabbed in the back by another man who was tackled by one of the charcoal colored people.
Then suddenly came in Nightwalkers from the floor below, dragging people down into the shadows, the force must have been tremendous for once their heads began crossing down to where the Nightwalker's pulled them to, their heads exploded, releasing a large amount of blood to splatter all over the floor. Scientists were being ripped apart at the seems, limbs, organs, and body parts began flying across the room as PEF Special Forces charged into the room, unleashing all of their firepower and only adding more chaos to the situation.
Suddenly the vision blacked out, the same bright white light appeared as I came back to reality, my heart rate increasing then going back down once I took a deep breathe, once again leaving me shivering violently at the end of it all.
Cameron ran away from me, ending up falling to the floor and puked his guts out while I stood there, still as a rail. So much death and violence happened in this room at one time. That is what disturbed me, I can only imagine what it would have been like if I was there at the moment. But the only thing that puzzled me was, why were the humans attacking each other and why did some of them look like zombies?
He wiped his face off with his left arm and walked inside of the room, "I... I've been through worse..." he whispered as he activated a small flashlight at the end of his rifle.
I never knew I was able to do that, following whatever button he pushed, I finally figured out how to activate the flashlight too and joined him inside, "Jeez... some of these people committed suicide in here..." Cameron whispered gently, "...but how is that possible, there is no way these people could have smothered the walls with their own blood like this..."
My attention was instantly drawn to a PEF soldiers leaning against the wall, but by the look of it, that is the stature of which he died on. I investigated how he might have died by moving up close to him, "Shoot him, he could come back to life... some of these guys were infected with Nectodaphilia..." Cameron said.
"Nectodaphilia...?"
"Yeah, people say it is the disease which causes you to become a zombie, but its much more complicated than that... just shoot the guy, I don't want him reanimating right in front of us..." he said in disgust.
I aimed at the soldier, moving to the side so he was facing away from me, now using the scope placed on top of the rifle, but once I began to zoom in on his face he turned his head towards me, an evil grin on his face as he stared me in the eyes, my unsuspecting reaction came, I yelled in fear as the soldier grabbed my right arm and pointed it at my face, "Freeze, mother fucker!" Cameron yelled, pointing his rifle at the soldier, "No... no, no, no, no, I want to help..." the soldier said, his voice elderly and dried up as if he has not drank water for days.
"What makes you think you can help us...?" Cameron asked, suspicious about a PEF soldier helping us out, especially because of the fact that he had my own gun pointed to my face. Even I knew that this was too suspicious, why in the world would we want to help us?
I couldn't use anything against him, not even Flamethrower or Icebeam, it would take too long for me to charge it up and by then he would have already killed me.
"I heard what you guys were talking about earlier... I know where they are keeping the Eevee of which you speak... I know where they are keeping all of the Eevees" the soldier said in that same elderly voice. The feeling of his dried up, bloody hand touching me almost made me ill, who knows how long this guy has been in this room full of rotting corpses.
"Okay, okay, you can help us, now get your fucking hands off of me!" I yelled, pushing away from the soldier.
"Fine... fine, follow me now..."
Cameron gave me a disappointed look, most likely on account of me trusting this guy, but in his state I knew he MIGHT be of some use, he was too weak to fight by the way he walked so that made me feel a little less cautious about this whole thing.
The soldier, even in his weak position, managed to move to the door that leads to a long hallway. "Please... ever since this whole thing started... I just... I just want to get out of it alive... I don't care about the PEF or killing Pokemon... I'll love Pokemon forever if I'm able to get out of here..." the soldier said, tears of fear falling out of his eyes.
"Maybe this guy is serious..." Cameron whispered to himself, still keeping his gun pointed at him.
"What's your name...?" I asked, trying to calm him down as I placed my left paw on his shoulder, no matter how disgusting it was covered in blood and unknown substances, "S-Steven Turner..."
"Well Steven, are you sure you know where the PEF hid the Eevee?" Cameron asked as Steven lead us through the hallway with both me and Cameron ever vigilant and aware of what might be lurking in the shadows.
"Yes, down this hallway, pretty much straight down to two elevators labeled 1A and 1B" he responded.
"So... can you tell us what happened here, what is the full situation?" I asked.
"Ever since we captured a little Sneasel who we have identified as the son of one of the leaders of the Anriu... this entire place has gone to hell. These demons coming out of the shadows and killing us all, infecting us with some disease and causing us to turn on one another... it has truly been the most horrific day of my entire life..."
"Nectodaphilia, right?" Cameron asked.
"Yes, sir"
It really must have been Constantine doing all of this, how is it that a little child was capable of bringing such havoc and torment to these people?
Human or Pokemon, it is all still horrific.
Moving up farther and farther, the death rate of the area increased, blood was smeared all over the walls everywhere, lights flicker on and off from above, objects and equipment lay on the floors.
"Truly a great place to live, we should seriously move in, the couch could go over there by the disembodied arm, the TV could go by the blood marks on the wall, oh yeah and the dead bodies over in the corner..." Cameron was apparently trying to take out the tenseness in this situation. I was amused but Steven was not, silent like a dead man he was, not a word without meaning escaped his lips.
As we neared an intersection in the hallway, we heard a low growling noise coming from a small room to our left. With another pathway to our right and our destination lying forward, we continued moving on.
"But... if we get separated, which elevator should we take, Steven?" I asked, desperately trying not to step on any body parts of blood puddles on the floor.
"The elevator we have to go through is..."
BOOM
"Not... cool..." Cameron whispered as all of the lights in the area shut off at once.
BOOM
The lights turned back on.
"Wha... what the fuck is happening?!" Steven screamed, looking around frantically for the cause of all of this.
"Nightwalkers I believe, they suck up power in a certain room and cause the lights to malfunction. That is what is happening here..." Cameron explained, preparing himself for another group of 25 or more Nightwalkers to burst out of the shadows.
BOOM
Darkness filled the hallway, I cautiously stepped back, my senses going wild and my long ears fluttering back and forth, I was trying to sense out the Nightwalkers, but they were just too illusive until contact was made with them.
"Crap... more Nightwalkers?"
"Cameron, both of us, light up the room with our Flamethrowers!"
As I ordered it, so it was done. We both shot flames up to the ceiling which lighted up the entire room from anything unexpected, both of our flames merged together to create a light fire ball on the ceiling but out of nowhere, black strings tied up to Steven on his body as if they were actually connected to his skin.
BOOM
The lights turned back on, revealing that my accusation of what was controlling him was correct, little black strings attached to him.
"No, no, it's not going to end like this!" Steven screamed as he desperately tried to pull the black strings off of his body with Cameron and I still lighting up the room with our flames.
Steven began to lift up from the ground as Cameron and I cancelled out our Flamethrowers in fear and confusion on what was happening to him.
"The black strings... Steven, cut off the strings with anything, you're being controlled by Anriu Ventriloquists!!" Cameron yelled.
"Ventriloquists...?"
"I don't have anything sharp en..." before Steven finished his sentence, he was flung against the wall several times, his bones cracking against the hard metal and his blood splattering with each encounter with the wall. The Ventriloquists let out a screech as he hit the walls.
He screamed in agony as the Ventriloquist, not in sight, flung him up to the ceiling and back to the floor several times, his blood splattering everywhere as Cameron and I could only watch.
To end it all, the Ventriloquist pulled Steven into the room to our left, the door mysteriously opened up as he slid across the floor, his nails scraping against it as he desperately tried to hold on, "Fuck, help me!!!" he yelled.
As he said that, I remembered back when the Nightwalkers attacked Cameron and I, "It's... these guys are pulling me apart, fuck, help me!!!" the last part of their sentences echoed and merged through my mind.
Finally we both sprung into action and I grabbed his right arm while Cameron grabbed his left. We held on desperately as the Ventriloquist pulled him inside of the small, dark room, "Please... I don't want to die...!" Steven yelled, tears flying out of his blood-encrusted eyes.
"Oh... shit..."
His arms were disconnecting, I knew we could not hold on anymore for Steven began to scream from the pain of having both of his arms fall out of their joints, but before we could think of a better way to save his life, both of his arms ripped right off, Steven's screams echoed past the empty hallways as me and Cameron slammed against the opposing walls, one arm for each of us which we quickly dropped as soon as we realized we were holding an actual human arm.
The sounds of clothes tearing, flesh ripping, and blood splattering filled the room where Steven was dragged was accompanied by his blood-curdling screams of pain. I jumped up and ran towards the window which showed me the interior of the room, but before I could see what was inside...
BOOM
The lights turned off once more and the screams of Steven ceased, the sound of ripping, tearing, and splattering still existent though.
BOOM
The lights turned back on just in time for me to see a Ventriloquist staring me in the face from the other side of the window. It resembled a worn out doll with scratches all over the face, even doll-like eyes, it was dressed in a black robe which had the Anriu insignia down the middle and its face resembled one of a 5 year old child with her hair covering her entire face, but before I had time to comprehend any of that, it screamed at the top of its lungs, its mouth widened to an extent which seemed unrealistic, it even caused the lights to dim down and flicker. I shut my eyes and closed my ears, the scream was just too loud for me to bear, this was nothing like the sound of gunfire, this was the sound of a million little girls screaming all at once inside of one secluded area.
Finally the scream faded away, and along did the Ventriloquist, it turned into a black mist and vanished into the air as if it was a gas or maybe just a hallucination.
"Wh... what a horrible way to go..." Cameron whispered, "...and if we don't want to end up like that, I suggest we keep moving, there is nothing else we can do here!" I yelled as I moved forward in complete fear, this place was beginning to get to my mental stability. I just did not know how much more of Constantine's tricks I could handle.
As we got to a point where two elevators were the only ways down, I had realized that Steven never had the chance to explain to us where we should be going, the bad news was that neither of us knew the answer to this question, so by decision, we decided to split up.
I walked up to elevator 1A and Cameron to 1B, I pushed my button and he did his, we were prepared to leave our "Goodbyes" and "Good lucks" when his elevator shut down on him, sparks flew out and the lights around the elevator door dimmed and finally shut off.
"Fuck... I think there is a manual control device for the elevator over there, go see if you can open it up so I can go in" Cameron ordered, pretty much beating me to it, I was going to say the same thing except that he should do it, I guess he got me there.
Arming myself, I slowly moved into the room across the elevators, it had a control box back there that I could not understand, so I asked him what I should push, still looking around cautiously for anything suspicious, "The big red one that says "1B" on it..." Cameron responded, annoyance in his voice.
I pushed the button, the lights turned back on and the sounds of the elevator cart moving upwards was heard, I walked outside of the room, still with my rifle close to my side, I waved him goodbye when he stepped inside, the elevator light flickered as he walked in.
Then, something caught my attention when I saw in the corner, a dark, shadowy figure with a black robe on, but before I had a chance to warn Cameron about this, the door began to close on me, the shadowy figure slowly walking towards Cameron with a wicked smile on his face, the elevator door slammed in my face, unrevealing what happened next, but the disturbing part was that I knew who that was.
"Constantine..."
