Story Notes:
I came up with the story one morning, and I've been frantically trying to construct it. This is my first story on AGNPH. I hope you enjoy it. I'll try to update as often as I can
The Powers That Be
Yeshua was sitting in the lab room with his palm glued to his forehead. He looked pale and felt ill at ease. The search for mew had been a success, but there was no conceivable reason why it should have been a success. Yeshua sat there in bitter confusion. He was angry. He was scared. He was happy. Those feelings were understandable to him. After all, he had just reached into thin air and plucked a mew from it. But he also felt something else...fear. He knew what he had done was something that should have been beyond his capabilities. He could still see the professor's unbelievable reaction.
"To make someone of his demeanor... of his intellect... just lose his composure the way he did...", Yeshua spoke to himself, "It must mean that I have done something unfathomable."
The lab door suddenly opened. Yeshua turned to see Nick enter the lab carrying a plastic bottle. Nick looked at Yeshua, then walked to the other side of the room to his desk. He sat on his swivel chair, and then rolled himself to Yeshua's side. Nick set the plastic bottle next to Yeshua. Yeshua looked up at the bottle, and then looked up at Nick.
"It's lemonade", Nick said, addressing Yeshua's silent question. "You've earned it."
Yeshua gave a weak thank you before accepting the drink.
"So, what's the story?", Nick finally asked. "As soon as we brought the mew to the lab, you didn't follow us to the examination room. Why would you pass up a chance to study a mew?"
"I don't have my head on my shoulders right now", Yeshua answered. "I can't really think straight..."
"Well you apparently must be able to think straight!", Nick argued. "You beat the professor to finding the mew! I had asked him what he had been doing during that time, and he said that he was determining the mew's location based on the deviance of the wind current around him. I'd never heard of anything of the sort! The professor continues to amaze me with his brilliance!"
Yeshua felt even worse than before. "Yeah..."
Nick's face hardened. "Yeshua!", he spoke in a tone that sounded much harsher than before, surprising Yeshua. "You managed to outwit the professor! You found AND obtained the mew we were searching for! What part of this is making you feel miserable!?"
"All of it!!", Yeshua suddenly yelled, taking Nick by surprise. Yeshua was surprised as well. He brought his tone down lower and continued. "I don't know what I did... I don't remember arriving at the tree where mew was... and I don't know how I managed to find it when it turned invisible... I had no right to find that pokemon. The professor, by all accounts, deserved to find it first!"
"Deserved?", Nick spoke. "So you're saying that you aren't worthy of looking at or holding a mew?!"
"No...", Yeshua answered. "That's not what I mean..."
"Want to know what I think, Yeshua?", Nick asked, softening his tone. "I think that, like the professor, you have a gift when it comes to pokemon studying. You may not know what it is that you have done, but that doesn't make what you have done any less significant."
Yeshua understood what Nick was saying. Yeshua felt like a burden was lifted off of his shoulders. He wasn't fully at ease, but he was able to smile again.
"Now... it's almost closing time.", Nick pointed out. "You want to take a look at the mew before we have to go?"
Yeshua smiled and nodded.
"I'm afraid that's going to have to wait", a voice that Yeshua recognized as the professor's resonated.
Yeshua turned to see the professor, and was surprised to see him looking exactly the same as before the mew incident. It was as if his facial features had a short-term memory.
"Nikolai... you're dismissed for the day. I expect to see you back tomorrow at 7 A.M."
"Uh, professor?", Nick started, "before I go..."
"I won't give you your bonus up front", the professor interrupted. "You'll get it when you get your paycheck at the end of the month."
Nick walked out the door with slightly less pep in his step. Yeshua started to gather several of his things together, but the professor quickly stopped him.
"I didn't say that you were dismissed, Yeshua", the professor said.
Yeshua felt nervous. He didn't know what to say or what to do right now, so he just looked at the professor.
"You didn't take any research notes at all today, did you?", the professor said in a tone that sounded more like a statement than a question.
Yeshua thought back. He hadn't, had he? He was so shaken up from earlier that he had neglected to do the one thing he was supposed to do: his job. He had to try and make things right.
"Professor", Yeshua began. "I feel I should explain..."
"You can do that", the professor interrupted, "in my office."
Yeshua felt really nervous now. "This isn't good!", he thought to himself. "This kind of thing is never good."
Yeshua nodded glumly and followed the professor to his office. The professor turned around to look at Yeshua and spoke. "Wait inside. I have a few things I need to check on before I deal with you."
Yeshua agreed nervously and walked inside his office. The office loomed in front of him as empty as can be. The room was lit by a ceiling light and a desk lamp on the professor's table, but the room never looked like it could be considered bright in any aspect. Yeshua heard the door shut. The professor had left.
Yeshua stood up. He wanted to take a look around. Part of him was very curious about the professor's past. Yeshua wanted to examine every nook and cranny of the room, but he didn't want to intrude on the professor's privacy. Yeshua decided to just look around the room. Various pokemon research journals littered the tables. Yeshua noticed that the professor's name was on the cover of several of these journals as the featured author. He then looked at the bookshelf. He was hardly surprised to see a bookshelf filled with textbooks.
For some reason, Yeshua was very unsettled by this room. There was something about this room that seemed... dishonest.
"This room", Yeshua spoke, "fits the look of the professor...but is devoid of his ambitions." Yeshua's eyes started to glaze over. "The arrangement of the room... makes it look like this is all that is...all that ever will be."
"All that is", Yeshua repeated, trancelike. Yeshua found himself walking towards the bookshelf, transfixed by the books on the shelf. Yeshua didn't know what he found so interesting about the books, but he felt as if he must stand here.
"Payapa's... Lament", Yeshua found himself saying...then he just stood there with a confused look on his face. Why did he just say that?
"Access granted", a mechanical voice resonated. Yeshua yelped. The voice had startled him, causing him to look around the room in confusion.
The second shelf of books suddenly shifted to the side. Yeshua stood there as confused as could be as a shelf could be seen behind where the second shelf was resting. Yeshua saw a vial of an orange-colored liquid and a strange pokeball.
"What did I... just do?" Yeshua whispered hoarsely.Chapter End Notes:Hanging Mew WILL be in the next chapter, just not until at least halfway through it. Please rate and review!
